Our compassionate government at work.
A NINE-YEAR-OLD Iranian orphan will return this morning to Christmas Island, where locals fear he will resume a daily ritual of staring blankly and waiting at the gate for new boat arrivals, in the hope that his mother will be among them.

Seena, an only child, will fly back despite an offer from relatives in Sydney to care for him and warnings from mental health experts that going back will intensify the psychological harm already done. The boy told relatives yesterday that he feared returning to the scene of the tragedy that claimed both his parents.

Given that a trivial comment from Abbott has attracted 385 posts in a week, I'll be interested in what spin the cheer-leaders can put on this one.

It is a disgrace that a supposed civilised country could do this to a child. Surely one leader of this country will stand up and be counted. Hopefully its another media beat up and the kid will be allowed to stay with his family.

If you bend the rules for one person early it will open a whole can of legal worms. There is a place for protocol even if it seems harsh.

And people are suggesting the govt do what exactly ?

hand him over to some adoption agency or foster parents ?

More crocodile tears I suspect

I suspect your view would be much different if this was Howard in charge.

Not really, despite protestations, I dont see the difference between the parties when they are actually in power ergo why people would choose a party to vote for based on this issue.

I just wonder why people thing taking a kid from one situation and putting them in another is automatically better.

Wheres the scrutiny on the people wanting to take these kids on - its not THAT long ago people did this just to get a domestic slave

Shameful stuff, I thought we got rid of Howard to end this sort of shit.

If that boy has relatives in Australia, thats where he should be placed.

Obviously a 9 year old poses no security risk for Australia, but the government still has to do due dilligence as to whats best for him..

a) Return to country of origin where closer relatives exist ?
b) Be adopted by relatives here.
c) Become an Australian orphan. (Foster care, etc).

The poor little fellow is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

So if you are related to an orphan, there shouldnt be any checks and balances ?

particularly as the child is in a fragile mental state ?

ALSO if the child has realives who can sponsor - how come the people weren't applying via family reunion process ?

3 questions: 1:how did this 9yr old get on the boat

2:where did he get the money from to pay to get on the said boat as they don't do it for free as we've seen on ACA and Today tonight,

3: As much as i feel for the young chap, why is it that Australia, the dryest continent in the world with limited natural resources has to be a place for everyone to come and live, when it has been scientifically proven that the country with its current infrastructure can only sustain a max population of 22 million. people wonder why they can't afford houses anymore, its because of supply and demand, there are more people here than ever and less buildings going up, therefore prices go up for everything and the way of life as we knew it goes down the drain?

its not australia's fault that other nations cant get their shit together. lets send tradies, engineers labourers etc... and the army to their country empower the people in that country to fix their own problems help restore their way of life so that they dont have to pay pirates to smuggle them here.
i could go on but thats my rant for the day!

Boarding plank I presume. Refugee boats dont always abide by the laws of the sea, so age restrictions are overlooked.

His parents.. who were also on the boat

I dont think housing affordability should weigh to much on the minds of those deciding this kids future.

Didnt he come from Iraq ? A bit more than a shortage of traddies to worry about there.

Appalling situation however Bowen has stated that he will be released into the community shortly - they are just doing necessary checks to ensure he will be supported (mentally and physically).

However, why send him back to Christmas Island to do the checks? Why not leave him at Villawood closer to his relatives? (whom i assume the government are currently checking)

so Dr Jolly when you were brought up as a kid did your father tell you to take responsibility for your actions or to run away from them and get someone else to fix your problems?

the people of Iraq need to do the same, the U.S & U.N forces are there to help facilitate the rebuilding of their country. if they keep running away the problems remain the same.

as for point two i was talking long term i.e. 50 years down the track, but no one, not even the govt bothers to contemplate this, all they think of is keeping their job and not developing the country for future generations.

I'm sure there are many other kids in orphanages in Australia in similar circumstances.

That's my opinion.

Hard to believe this blunder from a minister who appears to have been the most compassionate minister we've had in a while.

You could almost make a Micallef Show or Newstopia skit out of that.

Yep, a 9 year old orphan is responsible for the problems in his original country.

Let the kid be collected by his relatives, then arrest them all as they are guarenteed to be in the country illegally as well, then throw them onto the first fishing boat out of the country back to where they came from, why waste money on an air fare, they have used up enough of the tax payers money already.

What family? I thought he was orphaned as a result of the boat wreck.

From reports I've read and heard he's Iranian and not Iraqi as someone asked earlier in the thread.

Why do these people continue to try and come to Australia?

Don't they know that they will become prisoners as soon as they spend their life savings in a crap boat that may sink and drown them before they get here?

IMO the Australian Government needs to make this fact known in places like Iran, Iraq etc. Even through such means as TV advertising.

In regard to the kid, it's a terrible situation but where is he going to go?
To be released into the care of relatives if they exist? This is probably the best option for him, but can these relatives support him financially? Can they even support themselves?

Or will he go into the DOHS care, taxpayer funded again?

Or will be be adopted by a private Australian family? This should be the option if his relatives cannot support him provided there is a suitable family willing to take him on.

Pretty much sums it up.

You can keep catching the fish for the man, who you can teach him to fish for himself. Unfortunately there is many, many people in Australia who have the white leftist guilt mentality and want to take on other nations problems as well as our own.

Are you sure it was someone afflicted by white leftist guilt who led our country into taking on other nation's problems, where these people are coming from?
