YAY! Im getting my braces off this Monday and obviously, I cant wait.

Im so excited to hear that I get these ripped off and then I get a plate for 1 year full time then at night for 2-3 years after that. How fantastic is that? Another 3 years in hell.

Anyway, Ive never had a plate before and Im just wondering what its like for the people who have had one after they had there braces off.

Whats it like?

Can you actually take it out?

Do I have to suffer my football career because I STILL cant have a fair dinkum mouth gard in my mouth?

Thanks.

You can take a plate out.

When you're playing footy, just take the plate out before the game, put your mouthguard in, then put the plate back in after the game.

The two hours without a plate won't affect you at all.

I wanted braces. :(

I got a referral from my dentist when I was about 15 to an orthadontist. I have a tooth (top deck, right next to the big ones) that I wasn't happy with. It kinda overlapped a bit.

The specialist laughed at me and sent me home. He told me I was silly. Bastard!!!

Now I'm 32 and still not happy with that tooth.

Just make sure your orthodontist gives you plates as soon as you get your braces off...

I'm no orthodontist, but form my experience, I had a top plate as soon as I had my braces off, but only a bottom plate 6 months later... meanwhile my bottom four teeth have about six months of crookedness... so yeh not badly or anything, but enough for me to be ****ed off

been there, done it and got the t-shirt...
my braces went on when I was 11 and were off when I was 13 (right before I started high school so NO ONE remembers me having them hehehe).
Had to wear a retainer for 5 years, but hey my teeth have done well and are not straight yay! now if I could just do something about my nose

**** wearing a mouthguard. Haven't worn a mouthguard since 1998 - woulda played between 80 and 100 of aussie rules, and about 50 games of Rugby Union. Wouldn't worry about it to much if i were you...........??

Consider yourself lucky.

I had bands whacked on the top row when I was about 14. Got them off when I was near 18. Wore a plate for a while until I got jacked off with it.

At which point, slowly but surely, my teeth have slid back into an uncomfortable irregularity.

The orthodontist told me 12-18 months and my teeth would be fine. It took NEARLY 4 EFFING YEARS and MY TEETH ARE STILL CROOKED.

If I ever see that orthodontist again I'm going to punch him.

My son is meant to be getting braces soon once he loses all his baby teeth. Would you believe he still has baby teeth at 14? The stubborn little buggas! What I worry about is how it would affect his sport as he plays football and cricket. I take it you can't wear mouth guards with braces? What if he gets hit in the face in a game, will it cut the inside of his mouth? Just curious! There is no way he could give up his sports. It would be like caging a lion.

I am so sick of bloody plates arrr!!

In year 4 I was first given a plate as I wasn't going to have enough room in my top jaw for all my new teeth, then once all the baby teeth fell out I had braces for about 2 1/2 years. I am now in year 11 and have since had about 5 different plates but I don't bother anymore as my teeth are pretty good. Only problem is one of my front bottom four teeth has moved it's way in front of the others which is annoying me. So I should start wearing my bottom one at night but it's too painful if you haven't worn them in ages.

So as long as you wear them when you are supposed to you'll be right! At first you might have a bit of a lisp but it should go away in a few weeks :)

I've always had a slight overbite, and was supposed to have braces but my parents decided not to go ahead with it. I still have my overbite and my bottom teeth are a little crooked but nothing too bad. My sister had braces for many years and her teeth are pretty straight now.

I have a plate I have to wear at night because I grind my teeth at night and it weakens the teeth. (I actually had a tooth break before they realised the problem) and well I never really believed the problem was that bad, but after a year it is very badly worn so I'm actually pretty glad I wear it.

haha thats wat happened 2 me too, the bottom four are exactly the same as they were b4.
mine were hardly crooked, only the bottom ones were a bit, not that thats changed!

i hate my tosser orthodontist.
firstly i dont think i needed them in the first place.
secondly they said they would only hurt for a few days after eash adjustment. YER RITE. they hurt the whole time, how many million ulcers did they cause from rubbing i dont know.
thirdly they said that i would only have them on for like 2 years. or something like that.
MEANWHILE i got them in year 10, what year was that... yes start of 98. i got a plate on the top but they put a band thing on the bottom ones, its on the inside of the teeth and I STILL HAVE IT NOW! in 2003!
and the ****er is now saying that i have to wait til my wisdom teeth come through b4 i get it off. whos to say they will come through at all?
if i could get the band off myself i would never go back i tell you!

i don't see why braces are necessary, just cosmetics, and very expensive.

my teeth do the job just fine.

thats disgusting. is the front right a fake? looks too white to go with the rest.

ewww

A plate isn't so bad. It's nothing compared to braces, anyway!

You can take a top plate out, but a bottom plate is typically glued on. When I first got mine, like PG36 said, I talked with a bit of a lisp (should have seen me trying to say Justin Blumfield & Blake Caracella :D :() but I got over that. You get used to it, and after awhile you can even eat with it in. Not that you would. (Not that I ever tried it...) I recommend you don't try chewy when you have your plate in, though!

It might ache a bit at first, but that generally goes away. It's a bit like the way your teeth ache when you have braces tightened. It gradually gets looser, and you will probably be able to remove your plate with your tongue...(not that I ever tried that, either...)

I don't wear mine anymore. A year or so ago my dentist said I could stop wearing it, or wear it every now and again at night. About a month ago I tried to wear it at night because I noticed a slight gap in my front teeth and my molars are coming down, but after two nights of wearing it, I couldn't do it any more, because it was just far too tight.

Powerfromport, I still had a couple of baby teeth at that age. They had to be removed and then they gave me braces. :( And hey, you'll cut the inside of your mouth enough with braces, let alone whilst playing sports. You actually should wear a mouthguard with braces, you just have to get one specially made to fit. And I'd make sure you do, because your teeth are bloody sensitive when you have braces, and the smallest knock kills.

hehehe, nah, not really my teeth... just an advertisement why you are better off with braces than without. i've actually never needed braces. got lucky.

And once you get used to the plate being there, the reverse happens and you talk funny when you take it out. :D (well I found anyway)

I had braces for 20 months and I got them off at the start of the year. When i got my braces off i was giving a retainer(clear mothguard thing) to wear night and day. I'm really glad i did get braces because my teeth are really straight now:)
