Players in lower leagues still do effing weight training.

They do but nowhere near as much. They don't have professionals guiding them and they don't have as much time because they generally have to earn a living with another job.

But even allowing for all that, it's quite possible Close wasn't paying enough attention to weights while he was outside the AFL system.

I don't think he shirked physical contact, more so that he just did not have the body for it. Some players (think Ablett, Chapman) are so strong through the core that nothing knocks them off the footy. Varcoe never had that body.
I have seen a lot of kids scared first couple of years in senior footy, that;s just called learning

Trav had two bung shoulders that could dislocate fairly easily. His brother Adam had shoulders that would pop out if you looked at them.

probably Carrying puppy fat.

anyone tring to argue that muscles get frailer (outside of serious sickness) as you go from 18 to 23 is a clown.

I don't think anyone has or will be arguing that. He was carrying a bit of puppy fat (as all 18 year olds do) with little-to-no muscle, and has since lost the puppy fat but now needs to build the muscle. It happens.

He's never going to be Chappy solid but he can put on 5-10kg of lean mass over the next few years. Thats all he needs.

As has been said on here already he probably just paid little attention to weight training. Again, it happens. We've got blokes like Clark who still do that now while on an AFL list, Close not doing it as a state league player is hardly unexpected.

Since you ignored it last time - as per information from the club, Close is the lightest weight on the playing list, with Holmes even having more muscle on his bones. And maybe they means Close is one of those who's not necessarily going to put on much weight or muscle, but it'll be good to see how he goes after another preseason in the gym

It's not so much that he's 23 but rather that he's a second year rookie that is still developing - it's not like he's had 5 years of senior football under his belt, so stop judging him as if he does

And on your last paragraph, the fact he's still developing completely contradicts your last point - to start with he's shown himself to have plenty of talent in the role his playing which is that of a linking forward working up & down the ground (sorry to disappoint, but he's not in the team as a goal sneak)

And as for "limited ceiling", that may be true if he came in as a fully developed, senior player without room for growth and that's not what you expect from a first time for - the fact he's still developing, still got work to do in the gym etc shows that he's ceiling not limited and that there's room for continued improvement; we see improvement from season 1 to season 2, so let's see how he goes in season 3 and beyond

Even his own posts and threats to leave which he said he'd do and well he's still here.

I remember this comment from Dangerfield in regards to Tommy Atkins at the end of 2019, after Atkins first season as a rookie on our AFL list - prior to this, Atkins had spent 4 years on our VFL list.

Obviously VFL is part-time, but thinking our VFL guys would have access to some decent facilities at the club, but even then it took until becoming a full-time on an AFL list to really make the transformation.

I know this is Close's second season on the list, but it's not like things have really been normal during his time at the club. I have no doubt he'll be on the list heading into next season, so I'm curious to see how he goes over the next 12 months and how he attacks the pre-season

*Atkins’ rise has coincided with the transformation of his body from that of a part-time footballer to a professional athlete, something not lost on Dangerfield.

“When Tommy first arrived at the club, he was obviously in our VFL program for a while which is different to an AFL one because it’s a full-time gig in the AFL, he had an accountant’s body and now I think he has a footballer’s body,” Dangerfield says.

“It’s nothing against accountants,” he continues with a smirk.

Do you know how popular I am? I get way to many responses to read. I can’t read all of them. And I did respond anyway making your post redundant.

And the 2 years in the system as well apparently. But for some reason you think he is just going to start up next season. Why?

oh we all know exactly how popular you are. WE see it all the time and if we don't you are right there to remind us.

Close needs more self confidence which will come in time if he continues to be selected. He will then start taking more shots. He is being criticised for not being a natural goal kicker (but they are rare these days), but those people overlook the fact that he keeps getting into goal kicking positions which is the first essential for a goal kicker .
That’s an excellent point. He just needs to confidence to take those shots. Coaches need to be drilling into him to just take the shot, making it clear he has licence to do it.

Not sure about others, but the original comment made me think of the following song

As for Close i just think he has run out of petrol tickets like last year

I don't think he has. He was leading most of the running at half time. Finished top 5 for the game in total distance covered at top speed, 3rd for number of sprint efforts, 2nd behind only Whitfield for repeat sprints, and 3rd for average pace in attack.

His role is the hardest on the ground, and he really needs the inside mids winning the contested ball and the key forwards making a contest. His quiet game is more a symptom of our poor contested game than anything else.
