Brad Ebert was ours...

I do not believe the Crows were ever keen on Ebert as a first round selection, the club had numerous players ranked befor Ebert

IMO the media have built the romance between the Crows and the prospect of Ebert bring selected at #10, and the footy public just expected the selection if Ebert was available, now the club has selected a different player, everyone is shocked

Forget about the name and the romance of the Ebert name being at the Crows, the same as the Cornes name playing for the Power...., let's focus on our needs and not just next year.....

Dangerfield is a Gun and rated more highly than Ebert by the AFC, that is all that matters

Given our results at the draft over the past 7-8 years, it's probably not a bad idea. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

First round, or the entire draft? Id think that we've done quite well with some picks, given that we do have some exciting young players at our club.

Meanwhile we've changed alot of factors which some suggest have influenced our previous picks, so its impossible to uniformly lump them together in the same classification.

Apart from being a comfortable excuse to kick the club, with some people delight at doing, theres not much to this.

Now that the emotion of the day has passed i would say you are just about spot on and mirror my thoughts exactly. If his name wasn't Ebert but say Nigel Knackers nobody would have focused on him as intensely. Everybody would be backslapping each other saying what a great pick up and exciting prospect Dangerfield is.

Exactly! it's the name and only the name! if you watched Ebert play the first game in the country carnival against Victoria It was a wet football game and was told we want you to play like this the very next game against WA in dry conditons he was still playing the wet condition type of game He doesn't exactly have the footballing brain he has the gentics but not the brain!

Dangerfield is exactly what we need and I'm stoked we've got him!

Not exactly! I think we have a tendency to over-rate certain players and under-rate others. Our evaluation of 1st round picks has been very hit and miss. I was staggered when Rendell said that at times this year he had Dangerfield at 2 ahead of Cotchin.

Now, I personally rate WC's recruiting department as one of the best in the country and especially when it comes to picking up and uncovering midfielders. When their recruiting manger comes out and says that Cotchin is by far the best midfielder in the draft, I will listen because he has run on the board and proven record. The fact that we even had Dangerfield ahead of Cotchin at times can be a worrying sign. Sometime you are after something so bad that you tend to ignore other issues just to get it.

We have been desperate for pace and we could have been blinded by Rodney's sheer pace and "ignored" other things in his game. As I said, I think we would be the only club in the AFL that had Rodney in the top 10, let alone top 3.

Time will tell if we are right or wrong but when those with proven track record have a different view to you, then its probably time to re-assess and double check.

Stiffy 18

How would you know if no other club had Dangerfield in their top 10?... I know for an absolute fact that Melbourne rated him in their top 5

I also believed that we could all be blinded that Ebert is a SA BOY, I have seen a fair bit of Ebert, IMO he will be a solid player at AFL level, however, witrh the modern game, he will struggle to become a damaging midfielder.... my prediction is Ebert will develop in to a consistent HB flanker

Modern football is all about pace, breaking away from stoppages, running the lines hard, carrying the ball and taking the game on, Dangerfield has these qualities in buckets and can play numerous roiles

One thing Adelaide has lacked is a Goddes, Embly or Cornes type of player, all our midfielders are medium height, both Dangerfield and Otten's are not only quick but tall, this is the footballer of the future, and the damaging type of player the club has been lacking

So if the "afc thinks so" that makes it right does it. The AFC also thought Bode and Angwin were better prospects than Burgoyne and K Cornes - was that right.

you can't get it right all of the time. That's the nature of the game, but if the "AFC thinks so" then there aint much you or I or anyone else outside the club can do about. Trust the club to make the decisions and just get behind the club right or wrong.

Well, anyone with the name "Pat Dangerfield" has to be good at anything he wants to be...

Seriously, how cool is that name. Sounds like a Bond villian

Like a roulette wheel, if 10 blacks come up in a row doesnt mean that the 11th spin will be a black.

History doesn't necessarily have any bearing on the present.

Perhaps we all were with Ebert Stiffy. Blinded that he's local, blinded that he's the type of player we need, blinded by the name and blinded by others assessment of him.

Other clubs would have interviewed him and there may have been something about either his ability or answers or both that just didn't sit well with them. I realise there is little difference between 3 and 7 in judgement, but to pick someone that will spend very little time with you in their first year, tells me that with our first pick we needed to go with the best available. And if your pick is someone other than what the masses feel, then so be it. I am happy to abide by their decision.
Personally I think the only thing that was the difference was that Rodney has the agility and speed along with the grunt that we require.

The Coasters have plenty of grunt in their midfield and to my mind it was less of a gamble for them to pick him than us to. It may well come back to bite us on the bum, but so be it. We did the right thing IMO.

why on earth would the crows pick up a player not only from victoria when they could have had a south australian player and who wasnt playing next year due to studies?!?!?!?!
very disappointed with the crows!!!!!!
ebert would have been ready to play next season!!!!!!!

Why on earth would anyone draft a 17 year old based on their first year output? Thankfully, the Crows have a more long term view. I want the best long term player thank you very much.

Dangerfield sitting out the first year may well have helped us to get him. Would he have gone higher if not for that situation? Possibly.

Lets just say from what I saw of him at schoolies he's going to fit in at West Coast very well ...

Not overly shattered we passed.

The fact that West Coast didn't read out his name straight away suggests that they probably rated him just above someone like Rance, and were debating whether to pick him up or stick to their original plan. In the end went for Ebert.

I know one of Brad's teachers from St Michael's who didn't really have much time for him. I think his comments were 'typical arrogant Ebert, no respect, show off and loud mouth, but a great football player'.

I think that the fact that he fell a few picks will be good for him. He would have been expecting to go top 10 and would probably have taken it for granted being able to stay in SA if the Crows had got him.

On the other hand, I know a guy that taught James Sellar and Bryce Gibbs and he said they were a couple of the best students he has had. Totally respectful, bright, hard working, not resting on their footy skills, and a pleasure to teach.

I've also said the same about those two, as my dad had the pleasure of teaching them as well. :D

:o

I must be thinking of another poster.

I swear he finished school in 05 or 06 at Marryatville.

That's all right man.

I think ICDM, Fryingpan and SouthernTakeover have all done time at Marryathell.

But lets just say anyone who flies to Melbourne for the draft, gets drafted by a Perth team, but whose first act is to fly back to South Australia is definitely someone who likes to party ;)
