And if we don't, so be it - we can't sell the farm for one guy who isn't proven yet. We don't have the luxury of discounted academy selections to ensure we always get a high first rounder like some other teams ;)
Nope, just priority picks that were pissed away.

Again, so clever. Bring up something from well over a decade ago. Your board is that way ---->
You're the one who brought up Sydney?

I was talking about Freo on the Freo board

Show me the post where I brought up Sydney... Have no problem with you staying but not if you are going to be rude about our club about something that happened so long ago.

Are we really going to pretend that you didn't mean Sydney?

This is the Brad Hill thread, not the McCarthy thread.
Obviously the two can overlap because Freo only have a limited number of picks, and need as many as they can hold on to to draft in new talent.
But it's funny how often Sydney fans defend GWS.

No I meant all clubs that have discounted academy selections. Sydney is just one of them. We haven't a top 10 draft pick in forever but we will have one this year. Our early draft selections are precious whereas those other teams can finish top 4 and still have top 10 picks. It's a pretty simple concept. You seem to think we were silly for not spending big on McCarthy - whereas we now see it was definitely the right move to hold our ground and not sell the farm. Do I need to talk slower for you to understand?

Will be gutted if we trade first round pick for Brad Hill but happy to have him in the side for any of the 10 similar players we have who arent quite as quick which is critical to us at Subiaco.
I do have faith that he will be a good player for us but the nagging doubt is the performances of Lewis Jetta and Headland who stepped out of support roles in very strong teams/ midfield and found it very hard to make an impact Jetta and Brads stats are very similar atm.

I don't think it's silly at all. By the same token I don't think GWS are silly for holding their ground.
It's relevant in this thread because Freo supporters are not wanting to pay market for a contacted player (I have no doubt that this won't turn out like the McCarthy situation).

I wouldn't have paid a first and second for McCarthy either. It's just unfortunate that now Freo are likely getting a player who hasn't played in 12 months

wtf? They have lost a player on their list for 12 months and missed out on pick 3 this year. What did they really achieve by standing firm? Cam wasn't/isn't the only player under contract that wanted/wants to leave. What have we lost? Nothing yet - as we may not even end up with him on our list as you yourself said earlier.

You'll notice the Brad Hill conversation in comparison is a far more professional one between the Hawks and Freo. Both clubs are already looking for a fair and reasonable deal in the interests of the player and his family. Comparatively GWS just seem like spoilt campaigners and I'd account that to their ridiculous concessions. Is it just a coincidence that you are sticking up for GWS when your club has similar concessions? Perhaps you've had it too good for too long also?

I agree. However I think that GWS were afraid of setting a precedence of letting contracted players dictate terms.
I'm not sticking up for either side, I can just understand both teams' motivations.
You keep seeming to want to bring the Swans into the conversation. I don't recall swans having 20 first round picks in their first two years.

So far, there is a clear difference between how GWS handled McCarthy's trade wishes and how Hawthorn are handling Hill's. GWS ignored, denied, lied, back flipped, then drew a line in the sand. As a result, there is every possibility that a talented footballer has been lost to the sport.
Hawthorn has negotiated with Fremantle regarding Hill's wishes and confirmed this publicly. There is every possibility that Hill will get to the club of his choice, but if a trade can't be organised, then Hill will continue with Hawthorn next year knowing that his club did the best they could for him.

You brought up Sydney. I brought up the benefit of having access to discounted academy selections.

You got Callum Mills at pick 3 when you finished top 4 last year. We have to finish 16th to get pick 3 (ie this year). That's the benefit you get. We can't just trade early picks knowing that we can grab guys early in the draft by combining much later picks (eg 33, 36, 37 and 43). GWS and GCS have even greater concessions but this by itself is a pretty huge one in building a quality list.

I was referring to you saying that I have had it too good for too long. Swans were in the wilderness for a long time.

As for Mills, we still had to pay a decent price. It meant we couldn't get Josh Dunkley.

Granted, Mills and Heeney have still been steals for sure.
