i heard Ottens will come back in, will only play about 30per cent in the ruck and play the rest of the time up forward and resting on the pine. West will stay in the side and Gamble is out....

I dont think they will risk Otto... and why on earth would they drop Gamble before Tenace?

GEELONG'S determination to add valuable depth to its premiership unit means Brad Ottens won't be rushed back from an ankle injury for Sunday's clash against Essendon at Telstra Dome.

Ottens was yesterday rated by coach Mark Thompson as only a 50-50 chance after he missed the Round 1 win against Port Adelaide.

While the Cats are willing to take risks with injured players towards the business end of the season, Thompson said he was happy to give younger players chances early in the year.

It is a luxury few clubs can afford, but means the Cats get another look at back-up ruckman Trent West, with young defender Harry Taylor also in the selection mix.

Josh Hunt will play despite rolling his ankle against Port Adelaide, while Max Rooke might also be selected after a strong VFL performance.

"Towards the end of the year, if you are in the finals you try and plan for that and you go in with a different mindset," Thompson said.

"But at this time of the year I think most coaches and teams would have goals to play certain individuals.

"We've got Harry Taylor, Brent Prismall and Trent West and these people who we want to give opportunities to and we will do that.

"We were thrilled (with the ruck combination against Power). Mark (Blake) got to be the No. 1 ruckman and Trent got to play his first game and if Brad doesn't come up this week we'll play them both again and that's a great opportunity for them."

Hunt and Ottens will benefit from a 10-day break from the club's season-opening win on Thursday, but Thompson yesterday said the extended break was not ideal.

Essendon has just six days to recover from its taxing 55-point win against North Melbourne on Monday.

"I'm not sure whether having six or 10 days off is more beneficial," Thompson said.

"Most people would probably think 10 days but that's not necessarily the case. It might be, but we are not sure at the moment. Once you get into a routine of having six or seven days' recovery you get into a rhythm and we are able to cope with that. You wouldn't want to have too many 10-day breaks."

But while the start of Geelong's premiership defence was largely overshadowed by the weekend's other games, Thompson was hugely impressed by his side's performance.

"I thought our game was a sensational game of footy. You just concentrate on the first half and hopefully we will be able to do that again but for a bit longer. On reflection it was the perfect game for us."

Thompson said Geelong was unlikely to be lulled into any false sense of security after Essendon star Scott Lucas' Round 1 knee injury.

Looks like he might be missing, thank god.

Trust me.......
You're about as trusty as a Shannon Byrnes shot at goal

:p

Ive just heard from a mate who saw Otto at Skilled today and was told by Brad himself that its not a rolled ankle, but really stress fractures and he will be out for months. I really hope my mate is pulling me leg (he is a Collingwood supporter, go figure), but I doubt he is. This isn't good.

I'll take this as a joke.

Sorry about that. Im really starting to believe my mate was feeding me bullshit, and I wouldn't actually be all that suprised if he was.
