Carlton still a chance to snare Lions' Bradshaw
Jake Niall | October 16, 2009

CARLTON remains interested in veteran Brisbane forward Daniel Bradshaw, who is yet to sign a contract with the Lions and is still in Carlton's calculations for the pre-season draft.

The Blues, who almost snared Bradshaw as part of the Brendan Fevola trade, will have substantial room to lure a player in either the national or - more likely - pre-season draft as a result of Fevola's exit and the imminent departure of Nick Stevens, whose 2010 salary is set to be included in this year's salary cap, freeing up in the club's total player payments for next year.

Bradshaw is still considering his future, with a two-year contract offer on the table from the Lions, who would place him on the veterans' list, meaning only half of his salary would count under the cap.

The spearhead has to consider his home situation - he has four children, two in school - but also the fact that Fevola's arrival means he will not be playing in his customary spot from the goal square, where he formed a formidable tandem with Jonathan Brown.

He also has to consider whether he is willing to take his chances in the pre-season draft, where Sydney and Port Adelaide both have scope to pick him before the Blues, the Swans with the capacity to meet virtually any contractual demand if Bradshaw chose to put a high price on his head in the draft.

Clubs such as Melbourne and Richmond are highly unlikely to pick Bradshaw, while he does not fit the age profile at either Fremantle or West Coast.

Hawthorn, obviously, does not need him, given that it has Lance Franklin and Jarryd Roughead - and it has spent heavily on Shaun Burgoyne - while Bradshaw would likely be too old for an Essendon that has presided over the retirements of Matthew Lloyd and Scott Lucas. North Melbourne's outlook is unclear, though it, too, is following a youth tack.

Carlton is working with the AFL and Stevens' management to ensure he is able to retire and have his 2010 salary - estimated at close to $450,000 - counted in 2010 via the use of the injury payments allowance; the AFL is understood to have approved this in principal, but the sticking point in negotiations is the additional services agreement contract, or marketing deal, that Carlton is reluctant to pay and to which Stevens believes he is entitled. A player such as Stevens, who has been forced into retirement by a neck injury, would typically be paid $40,000-$50,000 in ASA, in addition to his contract.

Should the parties come to terms, Stevens would have his contract paid out before October 31 - meaning the Blues would open up substantial room in their salary cap, but the club's profit for this year would take a hit of $400,000-$500,000.

Carlton had persuaded Bradshaw to return to Victoria when the Lions struck an agreement to trade the 30-year old forward along with 23-year-old midfielder Michael Rischitelli in exchange for Fevola - a deal that unravelled when Rischitelli opted to remain in Queensland. The Blues went on to trade Fevola for Lachie Henderson, a young key position player, and Brisbane's first draft pick, No. 12, with Carlton's second choice, No. 27, sent to the Lions.

Just trying to work out what that means.

Our outlook is unclear. We are following a youth policy. That sounds clear to me.

Yeah for me it means "Pick up the freakin phone Niall you lazy hack."

I think thats the problem. He probably did ring and the club stuck to its "no comment on recruiting" policy.

It's unclear to the media because we are keeping everything close to our chest. And I like it better that way. Why should we be an open book to you media pricks who will only use information against us which has been evident over the last few years. We will tell you what we want you to know.

We will see 'the press' as a collective will take this approach with the NMFC, we've heard the australian journos take a pot shot each chance they get recently

For a long time there has been leak after leak come their way out of our club and now nothing, I think they are offended

I know which method I prefer

Meh.

I opened this thread fully expecting an in depth, sit down, expose on the President of the Kangaroos Football club.;)

Edit: As far as shit journalism goes there's a much worse article by Ralf Malf on the Hun site about divers with a photo of Boomer. Haven't read the whole article. I was too busy wiping vomit off my keyboard.

I was laughing at the entire article this morning. Has zero logic and no clear explanation as to how he intends to get to Carlton.

Clubs such as Melbourne and Richmond are highly unlikely to pick Bradshaw, while he does not fit the age profile at either Fremantle or West Coast.
How is Melbourne and Richmond differ from WA clubs in this regard? Silly comment from Niall.

How is he too old for Essendon when he can replace their departing old fart forwards? And how could he be unclear about North's intentions FFS?

And what about this "logical" paragraph:

The Blues, who almost snared Bradshaw as part of the Brendan Fevola trade, will have substantial room to lure a player in either the national or - more likely - pre-season draft as a result of Fevola's exit and the imminent departure of Nick Stevens, whose 2010 salary is set to be included in this year's salary cap, freeing up in the club's total player payments for next year.

Carlton gets huge cap releif with Stevens leaving, even though his salary will still count in their 2010 cap. All in the same sentence. You idiot.

So the AFL are helping Carlton cheat again. The way I see it is that if it is money due to him for 2010 then it should come out of their 2010 salary cap and/or injury payments allowance.

It's the battle of the journalistic titans, Denham v Niall.

One says Bradshaw has re-signed. Then when confronted with the Niall article, he backtracks to "well he said he'd re-sign."

The other is too lazy to ask the club so he says we've got a 'youth tack'. I'm no yachtsman but isn't tacking going this way one minute and that way the next? I took it as an effort to insult us.

I think all the so-called bigtime journalists (like Fatman and Robin at the Oz and Jakey boy) have got their noses out of joint with us because we closed ranks in trade week after our more open:eek: policy last year.

I think he wandered down to Arden St but was a little intimidated by his welcoming committee:
