Great to hear he is trying to keep positive and just as good to hear how supportive the club has been.

There is not much worse in life than depression (if that is what he is suffering from). I understand there are a number of forms of depression and varying degrees. However that is for another time and conversation.

A person's health should come first, first and foremost ahead of any profession whether it's sport or business.

Sounds like he's saying "I will get back to footy when I feel ready for it", so I think Collingwood will look at re-drafting him when the time is right.

Would love for the club to rookie him again next year if he can get his head right. Kid has too much talent to be wasted in local leagues.

Since the old thread is locked.

Abbott confirms he has been going through issues. Says he'll be back.. hope he works through his problems and he returns to the Pies.

Don't tease me big show specially after stealing the terminators trade mark saying ill be back.

You would think the Club would look at Te-Rooking him at a Later Time, When he is in a better place

Given Brenden's previous tweet related to beyond blue, connecting the dots he is struggling with depression.

All you care about for Brenden is his mental health and if he gets back into playing footy that's a bonus and the secondary thought.

I think we should stop with the Big Show crap, talk about putting pressure on a kid who hasn't played yet.
I'm as guilty as the next bloke for fueling the fire there.
But I think you are right. If he were to return to an AFL list, he could do without the added pressure of BF cult hood. Allow him to develop organically without the razzmatazz.
Gee, that was hard to say.

You are coming from a kind place sirlothie so I respond with respect.

How do we know Brenden would find this thread and his fan-based nickname any form of pressure?

If he knew of this thread's presence, he would probably find it amusing, a source of connectedness, and hopeful.

All three are highly correlated with successfully coping with depression.

All of our lives are poorer for losing a sense of playfulness, especially people with mental illness.

Good on you Popin for having warm-hearted fun!

I'm not saying his moniker was founded on any kind of sarcasm or ill will, and I know it's easy to say now things have taken a turn for the worse, but these things have a way of getting back to the person, if Brenden googled himself the first thing that would come up is a Big Footy thread and I doubt he'd feel comfortable living up to that name particularly as an untried rookie.

Now that it's come up he has mental health issues I think we should give it a breather.

He actually liked The Big Show joke.
Even tweeted with the hastag #BigShow
He is quite a character & likes to joke around.
Just a pity he has the depression to deal with.

If Nathan Buckley held a press conference introducing Brenden as the next superstar of the AFL you would be correct that it might place too much pressure.

This is only a fan site. If Brenden read the threads about him he would recognise the themes of playful banter and encouragement.

(Jesse White on the other hand might be hurt by his threads!)

Playfulness is much more useful to people with depression than sanitising communication out of a misplaced fear that we might say the wrong thing.

Remember many of the greatest comedians suffer depression. As did Churchill and Lincoln.

To play is not to be unkind.

Good to hear from Brenden :thumbsu:

Sounds fairly positive there and may be a real chance to be re-rookied.

Club might have said go away sort out where you are at and if you want to give it another crack there is a rookie spot there for you. May be why he is yet to be deleted from rookie list on Pies website (when all other delistees have).

If he doesn't then we have an extra rookie pick and wish him the best.

Firstly I've sufferd from depression for year's and banter and humour is good medicine specially having a laugh. I don't think afl players would care about bigfooty and Brendan in a tweet put up #bigshow so he must of got a laugh out of it. God speed big-S and see ya around the traps soon when ya ready.
