Re: Brent MacCaffer

I agree he played a decent game, but is a decent game threadworthy?

Re: Brent MacCaffer

I'm happy for him to keep getting games at the current output, and that can only be good for his development. Looked a touch vanilla out there today however.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

I didn't see him do too much wrong, but I didn't see too much done right (other than that one on one against Scotland in defence, was super), but he'd be up there as the one 'midfielder' to be replaced if we were to bring in a mid.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

Alan Toovey MK II?:p:D

He just seems to go about it the same way as Tooves, just goes pretty much unnoticed for large periods of the game, yet ends up with 15 disposals or so and you simply do not see his direct opponent.

Caff is a little more versatile then Tooves, but just goes "about it" in the same non fuss manner as the Possum.:)

Vanilla he's certainly not.

Excellent kick, good handball, doesn't lose 1-on-1's, tackles superbly, and is very strong overhead. His one glaring problem right now is fitness, which is why he's playing as a defender and not nearer the middle.

The only way he doesn't end up as a very good inside mid is if he doesn't work hard enough on his fitness. Everything else is already there.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

I really rate him, although he is very unassuming. I think he is a really smart footballer though, I find he always makes the right decisions with the ball and reads the play quite well.

Capably does his role each week without getting overwhelmed or anything, I think the coaches would be really happy with how he is playing at the moment.

I saw him get involved around the packs a bit today, his big frame could be a bit of an asset in the middle, low centre of gravity, tough to move off the ball and a strong tackler.

I think you can easily go the game without noticing him, but make an effort to keep on an eye on him (I tend to look for him because I'm a bit of a fan) and you see that what he does, he does very well. Slotting in quite well at this stage.

Still wouldn't mind seeing him play forward of centre a bit, could go up there if Leon is rested this week, send Buckley to a back flank.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

Very smart footballer.

Makes the correct decisions when he has the footy, his skills are very good and he is incredibly tough at the contest and 1-on-1.

8 tackles goes un-noticed, particularly yesterday as he only had the 14 disposals.

Definitely stays in the team because efforts like these are the small things that count in games.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

Once he genuinely finds his feet at AFL level, he'll become a very good player. I'm confident in time he'll get the ball more often (20+ touches), he's shown in the VFL that he can. As others have said, he's very clean/a good user/smart player and has great size.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

Played well again, I was surprised their were calls to drop him last week, was happy with how he played and seems to fit in well. The one on one vs Scotland was great to watch. He will turn out as another success out of the rookie draft for us - Caff, Wellers and Marty all in the rookie draft in one year - not bad.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

His downfall might be the fact that he doesn't have a stedfast position.

He kicked alot of goals at TAC Cup level and was groomed as a forward, now he is playing a half-back role? He isn't a midfielder, we have too many forward options and quite frankly he isn't needed in defence.

I don't think he has a position to be honest, and I would rather a specialist midfielder/defender.

I think that is his strength he can be played anywhere he is very versatile. It is always useful to have versatile players in any team IMO.

Macaffer = Lockyer Mk2

A stronger, more bullocky, in some ways more flexible option. (Can play FF if needed)

Against a few teams Lockyer would have been better, but in the long term interest of the club, Macaffer needs to get the role of utility and get thrown around as Mr Fixit.

Just don't jerk him in and out of the team. I think Mick has learned his lessons with other players (Cook/Stanley) and now really bloods players better than any coach in the comp.

Blooding them is one thing, giving them a consistent run of games is another. Hence why I'm for retaining MacAffer in seniors despite the fact that he's only a role-player at the moment. Certainly his form hasn't screamed "drop me!". However his upside is there if we're prepared to allow him to cement himself at AFL level.

Re: Brent MacCaffer

Solid player who will go in and out of the team would be in the best 22 of most other teams however. Hope he can continue to improve I think he will be a very good player down the track

Haven't actually seen a thread on young Caff and alot of the kudos have been going to guys like Rusty, Bally, Wellingham etc and fair enough to but this bloke is travelling under the radar IMO.

Having looked at his stats from the NM game, it really caught my eye and I was keen to actually go through all of his numbers for the games he has played in 2010 and I was very impressed with the findings.

He has played in 5/7 games this year starting from round 3 vs Saints.

He is averaging 14.6 disposals per game, 4.4 tackles, 2.2 marks, 5.8 contested possessions, 76.4% disposal efficiency all in 86.4% game time.

He basically gives us hardness and pressure around the footy (he is built incredibly well), he runs hard into space to gather touches, he always takes the correct option and uses it pretty well and is confident in doing so and the coaching staff have alot of faith in him to be rewarding him with a significant amount of TOG too- a feature of his flexibility to play a number of roles/positions.

I find all this stuff very significant because he has basically taken Tarkyn Lockyer's spot who is a veteran warhorse for our footy club and is keeping him out making life difficult for him to get back in.

I always thought the Caff was good enough to play senior footy but I didn't think he would be able to actually string a number of games together like he has this season in a side that is challenging for top honours too. Great effort from him and hopefully he keeps this up.

I'm glad to see him continue to get games, he's a committed fellow and uses the ball well while applying good pressure. I'm still unsure as to what type of player he'll become, to be honest, but while he's holding up his end of the bargain it's great that he can gain experience at the top level. I'd like him to finish off those goals though, 11 point turnarounds hurt against the better clubs.
