on another note, Moloney to essendon seems highly likely now, he has picked us as his preferred destination.

Edit: sandra sully with the late news...farkin phone. Moloney is a great pick up, 10x the player lonergan is for probably 100-150k more.

Good luck with Moloney. Went downhill when he discovered fake tans and indie glasses. Also struggled when the average time between a stoppage and the restart went from 11s to 3. There's a good player there somewhere...but there's a downhill skier too. Will laugh if we walk away with an end of first round compensation pick.

I don't really know how anyone who's forged a decent career with Melbourne can possibly be a downhill skier. Depends what you want from him. A club with the right system could find the right role for him. IMHO Melbourne were trying to turn him into something he's not.

He's a downhill skier in the sense that he murdered opposition sides when we were on top, but rarely contributed to losses or when Jamar was out of off form.

We did a Brownlow sweep thingy at work last year where the top two best prospects from every team in the league were put in a hat, randomly drawn out and then the winner was the person with the most combined votes (but not necessarily the brownlow winner)

Anyways, Moloney was selected as one of Melbourne's choices, so I kept an eye on his performance. Interesting reading:

MELBOURNE 11.18 (84) drew SYDNEY 11.18 (84)3 R.O'Keefe (S), 2 B. Moloney (M), 1 B.McGlynn (S)
MELBOURNE 12.10 (82) d BRIS LIONS 11.5 (71)
3 B. Moloney (M),
2 L. Jurrah (M), 1 L. Power (BL)

MELB 23.21 (159) d GOLD COAST 9.15 (69)3 C.Sylvia (M), 2 M.Jamar (M), 1 B.Moloney (M)

MELBOURNE 22.17 (149) d ADELAIDE 8.5 (53)
3 B.Moloney (M),
2 C.Sylvia (M), 1 M.Jamar (M)
MELBOURNE 17.16 (118) d RICHMOND 13.13 (91)
3 B.Moloney (M),
2 J.Frawley (M), 1 J.Watts (M)
MELBOURNE 17.11 (113) d PORT ADEL 14.8 (92)
3 B.Moloney (M),
2 C.Sylvia (M), 1 R.Petterd (M)

MELBOURNE 17.10 (112) d GOLD COAST 12.10 (82)3 C.Garland (M), 2 S.Blease (M), 1 B.Moloney (M)

PORT ADEL 17.10 (112) d MELB 15.14 (104)
3 B.Moloney (M),
2 B.Ebert (PA), 1 S.Salopek (PA)

TOTAL 2011 BROWNLOW VOTES = 19
Now 19 Brownlow votes is very respectable in anybody's book, particularly in a team that struggled, by and large, as Melbourne did last year. But when you look at the breakdown of the votes, that he only got votes against ONE top 8 team and only ONCE did he score votes in a losing side, so 14 of his 19 votes were in wins against bottom 8 teams, would add weight to any suggestion of him being a downhill skier.

Or he was carrying that whole friggen' team and couldn't manage it when it included Spencer & Bennell et al.
Nah, that's be Jones. Moloney carried nobody, he was carried by Jamar. Enjoy him, I won't miss him. Loved his comments when McLean left in this light!

Also, Spencer was out all of last year and only plays when Jamar and Martin are out.

Bitterness is not a nice trait.... thank him for his service and move on!

I'm not bitter, I'm quite happy he's gone
Not bitter you say?

Yet you make comments like this:

Yet 24th July 2011 you said this:
Moloney who usually shoulder the brunt of the work every week shouldn't be included in this blanket criticism.

Moloney shoulders the brunt work you said when he was a Melbourne player. Now he's gone and he never carried anyone? Nope no bitterness there.

Around the same period you rated him one of the toughest 5 players at your club:

Odd that you'd be happy to see the back of one of the toughest 5 blokes in your team.

Even earlier this year you stated he was in the best centre square starting line up at Melbourne:
http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/best-centre-square-starting-four.930871/page-4#post-23836820

This time last year you considered him a star quality midfielder:

But yeah you're not bitter at all.

Well there you go. Kudos to you for finding that, I'd completely forgotten. Looks like I rated him last year, how the might do fall! As I'll now say, I think he lost it with a combination of his off-field antics, his hump with Neeld and the decrease in stoppage time. Wish it had worked out here, but I'm not unhappy he's gone.

As you called him, just the other day:

We have enough midfield plodders that can't get near the ball.

Pass.
Anyway, that's some impressive Akermanis-like snooping work. You'll rack up the likes. Enjoy him.

I understand why you're pissed with the bloke. The way he fell to pieces this season when your club needed a leader is nothing short of abysmal but we aren't recruiting him to be a leader. We have plenty of those. So while you're well within your rights to be bitter the issues Melbourne have with him probably wont eventuate at Essendon.

Having said that I still think he's a above average plodder.

A real heart and soul player of Melbourne. Obviously was drafted by Geelong and offloaded to Melb as part of the deal to get Ottens to Geelong. Despite not asking to be traded he got over his disappointment soon enough as he and his dad are life long Melbourne supporters. For the last few years every new draftee has a meeting with Moloney and he runs through the history of the club and what it means to him. He gives them a book about Melbourne at the end of it.

To push a guy like that to the outer because of one ordinary season says a lot about the club and why they're noting but pea-hearted bit players in the AFL.

Your right, you have hit the nail on the head. But I cant blame him for falling to pieces, that club has no direction and has a built a losing culture (sigh!! they beat us), but if thats the culture they maifested how can anyone remain positive, surely that effects anyones performance.

I think he'll benfit us immensely, ala Luke Ball for Collingwood. I just remember the Geelong game this year when we got mauled, dont tell me Maloney wouldnt be an asset in those circumstances, a lot better than Melksham.

Wrong player from melbourne - Should have gone harder to get Nathan Jones last year.

Hawks are known as the destination club, hope we don't become the Superannuation club.

We've had a decade of it, so why not?

Although Sheeds is getting good value out of that philosophy up north.

Moloney can produce some pretty damn good footy and would kill it with Jobe, Stants, Zaka, Howlett and hopefully Goddard around him.

Just the fact that he'll take the pressure off Jobe and Stants and will keep plodders like Lonergan out of certain selection is already a bonus.

He went downhill after your embarrassing club appointed the worst coach in the history of league footy.

in your opinion yaco, have Essendon ever done anything right?

+1

I honestly believe (without any proof) that Moloney was given his marching orders by neeld early in the year, if not before the season starter. He still looked like he had it in him, but just looked massively checked out and like he didn't want to be there.
