I see frequently the comment from people that Brent hasn't come on as quickly as they expected and this therefore means that he's never going to be a great player. I've seen repeatedly over the last 2 days that people have given up on him ever being more than good average. I disagree, I think Brent has something very good going for him and will continue to develop into a better player than what he is now and be a very good midfielder of the future. Doing some thinking I decided to go back and visit history, specifically the history of 2 players vital to the Crows. Goodwin and Edwards.
Goodwin debuted at age 20
Edwards debuted at age 18
Reilly debuted at age 19 (1 game, 1 touch, I hesitate to call it a debut)
All three spent a few years getting on their feet, and as I can't really remember back that far/I was youngish/ didn't pay that much attention to what was going on I can only really compare stats.
Goodwin's breakout year, statwise, was 2000 (B&F winner too) which was the first year he averaged more than 14 touches a game. He was now 23.
Edwards' breakout year, statwise, was also 2000. This was the first year he averaged more than 13 touches a game, he was now 24.
Reilly is now almost 23 years old, has played 68 games and averaged exactly 17 touches a game.
If we consider these years I have used as breakout years, then Goodwin had played 50 games before his, Edwards 81 games before his and Reilly 44 games.
Am I saying that Reilly is the next Goodwin or Edwards? Of course not, I'm just saying that I think people expect a player to be done within 2 years of drafting. Shown all he has to show within his first 40-50 games. I disagree and think that there is more to come and it will be very good.
And to the poster who once said that Reilly should be getting 25 touches and 2 goals a game, well, I will probably never convince you.(Whoever you are, I long forgot)
I'm tired so sorry for any mathematical or english related mistakes, or if this doesn't even make sense.
