Never thought in a million years I'd be suggesting this but after watching the Birdman in the last couple of weeks I believe he is ready to take on the AFC the captaincy (if ROO steps down).

His endevour and body language have been excellent of late, leading by example on the feild. He is obviously excellent on the track and also holds a position on the players assosiation.

If he wouldn't be your choice who would be next in line.

He wouldn't be my choice and he's also going on 30.

I still think Thommo will be the next long term captain of the club.

Somewhat agree in the age stakes, but I don't nessesarly think any of the younger brigade have stepped up enough yet.

I agree that Burton has really stepped up in terms of leadership in recent times. I wouldn't mind seeing him get the captaincy, although I'm pretty sure Scott Thompson will be the next captain.

Simon Goodwin will be the captain of the Adelaide Football club for the next 2 years.

Scott Thompson, Ben Rutten, Nathan Van Berlo or Brent Reilly will be in line after that.

Ditto for me.

Need to look no further than last night's game to see that Goody should be our next captain ... or effectively continue in the role he has effectively been in most of the last year with Roo's injuries.

I'm all for Simon Goodwin being captain, but do you think he's got two years left?

Certainly one, maybe 2 IMO.

Depends which way they want to go.

Do they want to give the captaincy to a Thompson/Reilly/Rutten/van Berlo now, while the established stars are still around and can help them settle in to a role they can do for nearly 10 years?

Or do they wait and let the aforementioned guys gain experience by being in the leadership group while a Simon Goodwin does the job?

IMHO each method has it's advantages and disadvantages. But either way I'll be happy. We've got some outstanding older leaders and great younger leaders too.

I really like the emphasis put on recruiting guys of great character with excellent leadership skills since NC took over. :thumbsu: These being primarily the Crushers + 1st year backboners + Thompson

I caught a snippet of Torney's interview last night (or was it this morning) and he pretty much said that Goodwin is the heart and soul of the footy club and the boys look up to him for leaderhip and direction. Pretty big rap from a team mate.

He is a monty for captaincy IMHO and boy does he know how to lead by example when you really need him to :thumbsu:

EDIT: To answer bus24's question, I could see Goodwin named captain with and 2-3 youngser players named as his deputies. The 2-3 players would probably be Rutten, van Berlo and Thompson.

Pretty sure it was last night Stiffy.

Porps said very much the same thing this morning on 5AA.

I hope we go with Scott Thompson next season. If we are going to improve as a club it won't be because of Goodwin, McLeod, Ricciuto or Edwards. It will be because the next generation of players - Thompson, van Berlo, Knights, Porplyzia, Reilly, Rutten, Johncock, Mattner etc - elevate themselves to another level. Appointing Thompson would be the making of him as a player and would be a crucial, symbolic appointment that would perfectly capture and give weight to the theme that our next generation of players are taking control over the direction of the club.

Goodwin is a magnificent leader no doubt but he doesn't cease being a leader when Ricciuto is playing.

They are the ones who will decide who is the next captain....

I suppose I was referring more to all this talk about the next captain all of a sudden by the players, suggesting perhaps Roo won't be continuing.

I think pretty much everyone knew that this was his last year as captain. He has repeatedly said that he wants to be around for the new captain just like Bickley was for him, so I think we still may see him go around for another year.

Also throwing my support behind this arrangment!!

I'm increasingly impressed by VB's ability to rise to challenges, lead by example and handle the media so he may overtake Thompson and co. in the couple years Goody is almost guaranteed to lead for!

Each time i hear someone from the club or supposedly in a position to "know" what Roo's doing i get the sinking feeling he might hang up the boots this year... I personally HOPE NOT would be a tragedy for such a superstar to go out on the disappointing season he's had this year and last..

He and Nathan Buckley seem imitate each other's career in good and bad!
