Re: Respect for brett ratten

Did not lose any respect for Ratten on Saturday. .. For mine:

1. Rucks had an off game - 1 in 4 aint bad
2. Injuries to key form personel - Combination of Ratts not adjusting and our other mids failing to pick up the slack
3. Poor conversion rate in the 2nd quarter - When we needed a couple to stay in touch
4. Essendon played out of their skin early and scoreboard pressure did the rest - We need to turn up the heat early and keep in touch

Ratten will rightly take some of the blame but the players need to look inward too. .. The real test is whether Ratts and the team learn from this and it becomes the loss we needed to have or if other teams take a leaf and we wilt. .. Big test this week and then the bye* next week. ..

* We wont treat it as one and I suspect we'll use the Essendon game as inspiration this week and then take out the rest of the frustration on GWS next week. ..

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Meh.

You're wanting to slash and burn one week after we beat Collingwood.

The loudest voice is always the most ignorant.

Where is the slash and burn - clearly your comprehension skills are lacking my good man.

Re: Respect for Brett Ratten

Ratts is doing a great job. It annoys me how so many people have it in for him. The guy has improved the side every year. This year will be year to assess him. Can he take a great side all the way, does he have what it takes to beat the best when it counts. It's hard to make the top 4, it's even harder to make a grand final. Grant Thomas, Ross Lyon couldn't do it and now the saints have missed the boat. Can he get the most out of the players ala Mick Malthouse.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Personally dont like Gibbs in the backline he is not desperate enough for my liking. He cost us two goals for missed tackles. I reckon he would be better off in the midfield under the eye of Judd and Murh. Maybe they can lead him the way.

Can tackle like wet spaghetti at times. Where are the Storm boys when you need them?

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Defies belief we continued to press up all day... Get up in the box and he could see what everyone in the ground could see

We have the best list in the afl top 2 at a min

I think we have still got our best footy in front of us...Look Im not a fan of Ratts sitting on the bench especially this week at Subi because it is not elevated and the view is ordinary...Surely in the confines of a coaching box with your trusted assistants , Im off the opinion you should be able to make better team decisions....we dont need our coach on the bench barracking ...Time to get in the Box and start looking like we mean business...I Just Dont Like it...its not as though we are a young team that needs the coach as you come of the bench to pat you on the bum ...thats what your teammates and captains are for....Please get in the BOX...Plus your ears are too big and people behind you cant see...hahahaha

Re: Respect for brett ratten

The Club depth as far as administration, coaching is much improved.

If we divide the team structure up in three sections - midfield is elite and attack is very strong - we need a tall marking target in front of goal OR at CHF - someone defenders bounce off woudl be a poefect world. Our set shots are a mental weakness.

However defensive structure is no where near as developed or sound. The big risk for Carlton is exactly in the unbalanced divide between defence and the rest. When defence is as good as midfield and forwards - we will have made it and Ratten will have delivered.

Then you look at best 22-26 players versus the rest on the list. Name a player who has come up from list over teh last year into seniors as a star. Tuohey aside (a rookie). the two best new players have been Laidler and Duigan - recruited from outside the Club.

Our list in VFL is a serious weakness - we seem to be carrying a lot of players with height and athleticism - who aren't pressing for selection. if McLean is the best of them - then put this list down as a joke.

Whoever is in charge of development needs a serious kick up the pants - as the future of the Club needs much more careful attention. Time for a sweep and clean in this area I suspect.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Wish he (Ratts) wasn't so damn honest at the pre-match.

Bit of schtoom Ratts, we don't have tell everyone every aspect of our plans.

Hmm yeah I understand what ya saying, I some times am a little puzzled with how he tells the media what he thinks of the opposition & how he is aware of there game style & what he expects them to do, But saying that I don't think Ratts is dumb & this could be a tatic to get into the teams head.

Not sure if you are serious with some of this.

You are not happy that we only introduced 3 new players last year who are best 22

You are critical that we recruited 3 talls in 2010 draft and they are not dominating yet

You think we have depth problems when we have made 5 possibly 6 changes and the all replacements have all played over 20 games. No Ben Sinclair required here.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

Great Post Setanta, Ratts is Carlton through and through, a former club champion who is turning into a Great Coach, hope he is still around in 20 years time with a swag of Premiership cups in the cabinet. Love the way he has grown with the group and love the way he greets every player when they come into the rooms..

Can't underestimate how important this type of stuff is... Premiership teams are forged on great bonds between coach & players alike.

It's a bit tough to discount our rookie development and then cane the development coaches. .. Surely the Rookies are developed by the same people developing the other recruits. .. Just in the last year we've unearthed Curnow, Tuohy has gone from strength to strength and a journey man SANFL player is turning it on. .. It takes a good combination of recruitment and development to bring players through and it is hard to applaud one and cane the other. ..

Remember tall players take longer. .. plus McLean was brought in to reward form in the twos and now is been replaced by Armfield/AJ which are two more examples of great development from two fairly rough edged players. ..

This is also where Ratts on the bench works. .. He needs to be flexible though and potentially might need to head up stairs during a break for a quarter to witness stuff falling down first hand. .. We have great assistance feeding him the info though. ..

Re: Respect for brett ratten

I'm going to sound stupid here, but Ratten didn't get a single vote in the Brownlow in 1995!? Surely not.
Team full of stars..... Kernahan, Bradley, Williams, Silvagni, Koutoufides, Hanna, Christou, Brown, Spalding, Pearce, Madden, Dean etc etc makes it hard to get Brownlow votes.

Won the best and fairest though which just demonstrated how the club rated him and how much depth we had in that era.:thumbsu:

He won the John Nicholls but you could be right. .. Umpires don't always get it right. .. Mind you when you're smacking most teams around then it can be hard to narrow down the three. ..

Re: Respect for brett ratten

I loved Ratts as a player and do truly respect the man but tonight we had no plan B and still look disinterested in getting the hard ball.

I just wonder if he is too matey with some players when they should be getting a real kick up the arse.

I'm not a true strategist and hope I don't piss people off by bumping this thread but tonight had me asking questions about the coaching again.

It's bullshit if you do piss anyone off. After tonight's performance, the questions need to be asked.

Should be very unhappy with his performance because he was tripe. AJ was clearly getting pantsed, to call the forward line dysfunctional would be a compliment, and to let a team control the space in between the 50s like that was abysmal.

He got the absolute best out of himself as a player, I know he can grow into a great coach. Just hope it's sooner rather than later because shit like tonight is unacceptable.

Re: Respect for brett ratten

people must stop sucking up to ratten.. his a flop and will never see another priemership while his in charge! come to grips with it guys..his rubbish!!!

Re: Respect for brett ratten

He was asked at a mid-week presser ''who's going to play on Reiwoldt?''

he just answered the Q..not intended to '' give the opposition info.''
the sun just blew it into a story

Malthouse or Sheedy would have said we playing Ellard on him just to surprise the press.

 Yeah right..... and everyone would believe that wouldn't they.

Ratten only told them what they already knew was a given, he did say too much at times last year though on a couple of occasions.
