To be fair from a distance at the ground, they look similar sometimes.

Majority of commentators get it right. BT ****s it up nearly every time.

I think the big thing is BT is in the Sat night timeslot to make it entertaining and broaden the appeal to people who otherwise might not watch.

On bigfooty we are basically all serious footy nerds who don't want the bells and whistles/ BT jibberish with the commentary. So hence he cops it bigtime on here

That would make sense if he could be considered in anyway entertaining

I can't imagine a casual follower sitting down to watch a game and thinking halfway through I might keep watching this because that BT fellow is pretty funny

Because of his penchant for using nicknames and other BTisms it would be hard for someone not completely familiar with the game to follow and in any case he offers no real insight into the game. What's worse he openly mocks Richo when richo is trying to make some sort of point

I think last night had one of his dumbest comments ever: *as Harry O is punching Joel Selwood on the floor* 'Umpire: CALM DOWN HARRY THE KICK IS YOURS' 'BT: 'THE UMPIRE JUST TOLD HARRY O TO CALM DOWN. HE HAS NO RIGHT TO SAY THAT TO A PLAYER'

Wot o_O

This is absolutely true. Im sick of the umpires telling players to calm down when theyve done nothing against the rules. The umpires are there to officiate the game, not coach or provide therapy for players with anger management.

I understand the use of names as it makes the game flow better if people know whose free kick it is, but when they say stuff like "get it out" when theyre not going to call holding the ball, its plain annoying for players and spectators.

Agree.
Let 'em do the crime, then the time (if any)
Don't want to hear the umps nagging the players : "Shane, two steps back, please. Shane, two steps. Shane!" FFS!

Nah that makes sense, theyre instructing them as to not giving away a 50m penalty. I agree with that, but after the 2nd time if they havent moved thats 50m for mine.

Was cringe worthy stuff. In all honesty though Darcy would have to be one of the most self indulgent individuals going around. And to think that the AFL employs this bloke to sit on it's rules committee
He is again another guy I don't mind on radio. I enjoy him on Triple M, but he can get bloody annoying on TV. I liked BT better when he wasn't the main man, it suited him better.

Sound business logic that. Don't appeal to the 99% who are your core audience, appeal to the 1% who might tune in.

The key phrase is "make it entertaining". There is nothing remotely entertaining about Brian Taylor's commentary. Hearing that he'd suffered a serious throat disorder and couldn't speak for 5 years would be very entertaining.

I despise Taylor, but agree completely on that point.

It's the same problem again - ego. The umpires have become like the commentators, they genuinely think they're the stars. They're not. Shut the feck up. You blow the whistle when there's a mark or a free kick. That's it. You don't coach, you don't offer advice, you don't yell out "15 seconds" while a player is lining up. You just do your job. Which means shutting up.

It's too late now though. The egos are everywhere and they won't be restrained.

I saw BT in a shopping center around 1986 when I was about 13. I nervously approached him for an autograph. Not only did he refuse but he disregarded me like I was something that had just dropped out of his nose.

The man clearly has issues. He loves to single out players and emphasise their mistakes: "Sidebottom's dropped the mark! Sidebottom's dropped the mark!" or " O'Brian is under it.....oh and he's dropped it! O'Brian has dropped it!"

Maybe his Mum didn't breast feed him as a baby and his Dad was a cruel drunkard or it's possible BT was just born evil. Whatever the reason, he is a sick and twisted individual who absolutely ruins the basic pleasure of watching a game of footy on TV.

One of the dumbest blokes going around and so caught up in himself that he has no idea that the vast majority simply don't like him. Funny how other commentators don't bother engaging him, the more he prods and pushes them, the more they back off...unfortunately it makes for awful tv.

I was almost going to turn off the North Melbourne/Adelaide game today when they were five goals up deep into the last quarter.. then I heard BT in the back of my head "THAT'S NOTHING IN THE MODERN GAME!!".

Especially when Lingy has called for the Roos to 'practice their time wasting' because they'll 'need it against the good sides'

Quite similar to Peter Daicos being called the 'Macedonian Marvel' for example, or Bruce Doull the 'Flying Dormat' by Lou Richards isn't it?

Commentators have been giving nicknames to players for generations, the better ones stick.

Oh boy!!

I agree with Hoggy. Lou Richard's speciality was nicknames - Flying Dutchman, Lethal Leigh, Big Dipper etc, etc, etc.

Think some viewers are too precious !
