Brendan Fevola would be an asset to Carlton for the next two-three years, and I truly hope Carlton makes him an offer to allow him redeem himself in this club.
He'll most likely end up at GWS because they appear to be the only club prepared to throw him a bone, but I believe given the chance to play out his potential at AFL level at Carlton, he would choose honour over money.
Barry Hall (who's four years older) and Tony Lockett found redemption and saw out their careers with dignity after their controversies and I hope that Fev gets a chance to do the same and be remembered as a champion full forward rather than a bloke who can't handle the piss.
And that's all he's really done. Made a goose of himself on the piss. I don't condone that, but put it into perspective. He hasn't r*ped anyone or beat up his missus or shitcanned his team or teammates in the media or knocked out anyone on the field. He's a bloke who is targeted by the media and not smart enough to protect himself against it.
He was beligerant and disillusioned when he was traded to Brisbane, but now I genuinely believe he would do all he could to be remembered as one of Carlton's greatest full-forwards and if he was given that chance, there'd be no looking back.
His sheer talent in our forward line would have considerable impact. Can you imagine how potent we would be with him, Waite, Walker, Betts and Garlett? Then you've got Hendo and Hampson to develop under him and become significant forward options.
With the coaching staff and player maturity at the club now, I doubt he'd even have the chance to reoffend, even if he'd be stupid enough to consider it. And there'd be no way he could expect a salary beyond an average player, but again, honour goes further.
I expect I'll be shot down in flames now. And fair enough, we gave him a lot of leeway when he was here, and most of us don't want to see him anywhere near the club. He had his chances and he can **** off.
But sport is ultimately about human development - a place for pride and honour - and I believe in this development stage of the team, there is a real opportunity for a truly memorable chapter in Blues history.
EDIT: Added a poll. Seems to be polarising opinion.
