Bring Back Home Grounds!!!

now, i know whe the name Nick94 is mentioned many of you think troll. well, im back. And i have another thread. As many of you know im one of the older supporters, who comes from a day when every club had a seperate home ground. Rchmond, of course, had Punt Road, Collingwood had Vic Park, St Kilda had Moorabin...gone are the days where the home team where actually the HOME TEAM. i know this isnt a strictly Richmond thread but i just wanna know what you think...Big multi-billion dollar stadiums or good old home grounds?

In the pre-season, yes. Home and Away season, no.
Multi-Billion Dollar stadiums = seating capacity, capacity = more fans, more fans = MONEY.

Even though your over the merging subject, i would be fine with a merge, i couldnt care less.

It would be fantastic but it's just not viable. We have to play at the G to stay financially liable.

lol at redeveloping Punt Road to AFL standard when there is one of the best viewing grounds in the world (i dare say) a stones throw away. Yes it would be great to watch games at Punt Rd, but the game is just too commercial now for anything like that to ever happen. The only way you'll get games at Punt Rd is if Coburg start playing there.

I think the standard of amenities at G and Telstra Dome are so high, that going back to Optus Oval, Waverly etc would see a drop in standard and crowds turning away. I know it's alot smaller scale, but here in the ACT Manuka oval was used for Nth Melb. Now the ground itself is spot on and we have a huge AFL support base in ACT, but amenties are disgraceful, hence people never turned up.

would not be worth the money... Given that the BIG 4 are all within minutes of the G anyway...

Wow. this was the same team that was so financially well off they had a snowball's chance in hell of having to merge. I agree with Belly#12, preseasons are perfect. but what annoys me most is Geelong and Skilled Stadium. After all of the other grounds were closed AFL-wise Kardinia Park is still open. The home grounds of olde gave home teams an advantage and scared the hell out of away teams. Now, this still happens, but only with one team. Thats right. GEELONG. There advantage at Kardinia is so great even West Coast failed to get a win. So why cant richmond have an advantage??? thats, right....cost, distance to the 'G......cost....well....read above. Im sure Richmond fans would love to see an all-conquering richmond and an all-freaking out away side meet. Theyd pay HEAPS. And as for closeness to the 'G....even better. That means no probs when it comes to away teams having to travel even further.

i'm not saying it wouldn't be good....all i'm saying is that there is absolutely 0% chance of this ever happening. hell punt road is barely up to scratch as an AFL training venue. the cost of such a redevelopment would be astronomical...it's just not gonna happen, because it would lose money, simple as that and money is what the AFL is all about.

well then, im sure they will bring it up to scratch. its not that money, they redeveloped Quandong Park (a local field used occasionally for AFL preseason games, considered one of the best.) on just a few thousand. if they cant afford it, get someone to buy the naming rights. its what everyone else did.

Very few people on here would remember a game at Punt Road.

I dont remember it even looking like a football ground that could fit thirty something thousand.

Those suburban grounds had a great feel to it but Kids today couldnt get into the idea of climbing a toilet roof for a view of having to poke your head around the shoulders of a bloke in front of them. Im not sure I really got off on having to stand in standing areas but the Tiges were firing so it made it all ok.

Taking a leak was a pain in the bum. When we used to bong on in the toilets at half time and it was very uncomfortable - The atmosphere though was great when you were high. I remember wanting to throw up at Princess Park toilets one day. That should have been burnt to the ground.

I agree that Vic teams need a decent "Home ground" advantage. I think this is one (there are others) of the reasons Victorian clubs struggle as the other teams from outside Melbourne (incl Geelong) do have a superior advantage.

The other factor is that if clubs moved back to 15,000 capacity suburban grounds - the price for tickets would skyrocket. Trying to squeeze 12,000 people into Punt Rd? They'd charge $100 a ticket and get it. No more families at the footy.

no the g is our home, get back to booting it log and quick, when we do play well we hit the big fella more often than not with long kicks........we are not a skillfull short playing side.

These Home grounds used to transform teams. I remember Fitzroy being at the bottom and we were the top team. The game started and they blew us away one day at the Junction Oval. It was amazing how they ran us around.

It was a great concept because top teams would always struggle for some reason. Just another quirk that has been flattened in modern football.

I dont know if I have romantasised the concept of trying to see the game as a kid at these suburban grounds.
