He's returning to Melbourne. A bloody good coach by all accounts would love to see him come back home to the pies. He was really unfairly treated I always thought he didn't deserve the lip he got. Would be a great story to see him welcomed back, he was a big part of the 02/03 resurgence and a magpie legend as far as I'm concerned

Your on fire tonight B B B.

Good player, no star, but very serviceable.
Can you imagine the pasting he'd get on big footy if he played these days?
And he was by eveyones account clearly the number 1 of his junior year, they called it the golden spoon IIRC.
Classic case of dominant junior going into the open field and not quite getting big enough to be dominant as a senior.

Career ruined by MM.
"We won't play him early with a young body" Played straight away!

It did not help him playing so young with a inmature body. Especially first ruck.
However not sure of the year either 2006 , 07, or maybe 08. He actually was playing the best football of his career got selected for Victoria he got injured quite bad , and with his body already being bruised and bateted he never quite recovered.
Was much better then a average player, at his peak was a very very good player.

actually not a bad idea... you suprise me sometimes BBB.

Agree, if it was now and better management would have been an ideal forward/ruck.

Maybe as ruck coach but the Gold Coast reserves missed the NEAFL finals this year. Not sure if hes looking like a coaching star just yet, especially considering the amount of talent (Im assuming is) in that Gold Coast reserves team

Biggest myth on this board.

He didn't play alone in the ruck from early on - he played as a third / fourth key forward changing into the ruck. McKee was our number 1 ruckman.

And Fraser wasn't destroyed by playing early on, he was destroyed when he did his knee in the Vic match. That, combined with his lean body and lack of courage meant he was always going to struggle.

Lack of courage you are kidding keyboard warrior
Anyone playing first ruck in an afl team let alone someone who does it undersized for the best part of a decade does not lack courage
Show some respect

Why don't we get the best coaches available regardless of where they play footy, rather than having a coaching panel full of former pie players like some here would prefer? Buckley, Burns, Lockyer & Rocca are already there in some capacity. Surely that is enough from the same club & the same era?
How about we get some variety on training methods, game day strategy & opposition analysis? Or we could just have an ex pie boys club instead.

Just cause he stated he lacked courage doesnt mean he doesnt respect him. I respect fraser but he was a disapointment as a #1 draft pick. Not his own fault....he was just a good average footballer

I agree with your assessment of his ability although better than the jack dyer description you give him
Anyone saying someone lacks courage is showing a lack of respect for mine so disagree with you there

Any discussion on how good Fraser was (or wasn't) will always go back to 'but we could have taken Pav' - probably would have won a couple of extra flags if we had. As for a ruck coach, we have to get someone to teach Grundy and Witts (if he stays) so they don't end up disillusioned and underperforming in a few years time.

i think hed be a great coach with his friendly down to earth nature the boys would love him around.

Lockyer
Rocca
Burns
And Bucks.
Screams a little too much nepotism.
Let's get the best available.
Maybe take a note out of Clarksons book and recruit coaches who have had day jobs.

Pea heart who was never a ruckmans arseh*le. A decent half forward at best but needed space or he went to water

I think the thread is about his coaching ability.

Had the tremendous amount of courage it takes for all players to cross the line on an AFL field, yes. And in no way am I intending to disrespect him. In my opinion he would be ranked in the bottom half of players of his size and position for the physical side of his game.

My main point is that his career wasn't destroyed by Mick Malthouse "playing him early' like so many like to suggest on this board. He was sheltered to a reasonable degree. He was a solid average player, not a superstar who would have won six brownlows if MM hadn't have played him in the first two years....
