Ok. Talked me into it.

Pick 74- Western Bulldogs

Ben Jarman.

If Adelaide haven't got the decency to pick him up, we Doggies will accommodate him in the kennel.

The Dogs might get into the habit of picking up other teams discarded father/sons and turning them into gun players just to troll the rest of the competition. Like a chef taking offal and vegemite and making the world's greatest crème caramel to show off.

That might be the best analogy I've ever heard

Believe it or not, if this draft had gone one pick longer I was all set to take Jake Barrett at 80 for the Roos. I wasn't going to bother posting my writeup, but now it's relevant for us I figured I might:

Pick 80 – North Melbourne – Jake Barrett

Obviously this probably won’t happen. North Melbourne had the chance to take the former Giant as a delisted free agent like everyone else. But it’s possible that the Roos or someone were waiting to see if a particular player would slide to a late pick, and if it doesn’t, perhaps Barrett gets picked up here instead of having to wait until the rookie draft.

I’ve seen this guy play twice – which is two more times than anyone else I could have picked – and both times I thought he was very impressive for the Giants reserves. I know you can’t read much off NEAFL form but watching him rack up touches I just assumed he’d wait his time and crack into the seniors, but he managed just one AFL game at GWS before being delisted this year. Possibly they’re planning to re-rookie him, but that tends not to work out so well.

At NEAFL level he’s a ball winning, high tackling midfielder with a bit of dash and the ability to kick a goal. He looks to me a little like Dion Prestia, with that toughness, lateral movement and a decent if inconsistent left foot kick. He’s had three years at GWS and I believe has been pretty consistent in that time, and with his collection of skills could surely develop into something more than useful if he gets a decent run of senior games.

I think North will want to build their future midfield in this draft, having taken a few KPPs the last couple of years. Barrett would have to be a more likely prospect than most of the 18 year olds they could take with this pick.

Thanks for that,I think we've done this really well, adding some maturity and strongly motivated characters .

Well done on picking up Big O. He's ungainly but with a preseason, a good tan and a haircut he'll start looking more like an AFL footballer. He's only been in the VFL system at Casey for a year.

His marking, kicking and tap work don't stand out - but neither are they all that bad, and he not going to be super athletically but most Dees fans wanted us to get him because his ability to pick up the ball at ground level and to follow the play looks really top notch for a young ruck. He just looks like a smart footballer more than the sum of his parts.

If his body stands up to AFL training and regular state league footy then I think he'll be a solid back up at worst and maybe decent enough to start.
