Brisbane Lions: 15.12.102
St Kilda Saints: 7.8.50

Saints were very disappointing.

The Lions are not a bad team by any stretch - but they will be struggling to make the top 4. The Saints should be taking these matches or at least battling to the line in a close contest. Not this rubbish. I know its very early in the season but I would have hoped for a more spirited effort. The team seemed disorganised and it lacked any semblance of a plan B. The clever ploy (by Matthews) of turning the Saints own game plan against them was a masterstoke. But this gameplan would not have worked without the personnel and the fitness. The Saints admittedly have been "hamstrung" by injuries to their specialist defenders. They have had to move players like Goddard back thus sacrificing some of their movement, ball carrying ability and the precise passing into attack that he and Gram normally provides. Sam Fisher played well on Brown but in the end Brown gets the nod with 5 goals.

All in all a most dissatisfying match for the Saints supporters.

Game plan? What game plan? You were absolutely pathetic. How humiliating for players and supporters alike. And yes Virginia, that's coming from a Blues fan. Hang your heads, you've been infected by the very team you beat last week. So bad it's not even laughable.

Agree, disgraceful effort tonight.

Have an extendend break now, hopefully we can regain some players and turn it around against the dogs.

The Saints announced that they may be a little slow to find form this season - then came out and comfortably put away a Melbourne outfit that was heavily favoured to win. The Saints would have set themselves for the re-match with Melbourne. (Melbourne knocked us out of the finals. Some of the Saints' boys may have felt that the result was not a true indication of where the respective teams stood). Maybe the Saints were just not "up" this week. Sometimes it is possible to be overmotivated - which makes it difficult to attain the same level of performance the following week.

RL is a new coach. He is not new to the coaching game but he is coaching against the big boys - the Matthews and Sheedys - and I can only imagine that he is on a steep learning curve right now. I hope so - because todays effort was not impressive. The players needed more leadership. They needed a plan. Brisbane were too swift in the centre. This made it very difficult for Lyon but he needed to get his tags right and bring in some changes to upset Brisbane's game. Rock (midfield coach) has his work cut out for him over the coming weeks - because we may have Ball coming back - but teams out there have seen what disarray the midfield gets in when Ball isn't in and under dishing it out to the others. They only have to tag him out of the match and maybe the same disarray will result.

We may have lost the balance tonight - too many outside players and taggers and not enough genuine inside players. Speaking of outside players - Fiora is one ray of light - Lyon seems to have Aaron playing his best football since coming to the Saints.

Matthew Clarke rucked quite well, several times we had the advantage from the tap and failed to capitalise on it. Rix was ordinary and gave away too many frees. Blake was busy early but failed to damage. Baker, Birss, Attard, McQualter and Thompson (all tagging at times) needed to do more in and under ball work. Xavier Clarke, Banger, and Hayes were not great contributors. Dal Santo's natural flair and class was negated by the tags on him. Still a fair game though. Montagna and Fiora contributed reasonably good efforts.

This game was won and lost in the midfield. Our midfield pressure was fair, theirs was intense. They looked faster, more nimble, more alert, and as if they had more time. Our supply to our forwards was poor and the pressure applied by them was intense when it came down there. Milne tried to be too creative - turning genuine chances into clearances for Brisbane time and time again. I don't know if this is due to Adcock's brilliance or Milney's poor performance. Our backline were fairly good. They had a lot of ball they could have handled better but considering the opposition Fisher performed admirably for most of the match. Goddard wasn't the only one losing his cool out there - there was a lot of feeling - most of it frustration.

Never rely on round 1 form!:D

i don't understand why st.kilda still have stephen milne in the team.
he is an absolute dumbass, just gets these little shots of adrenaline that go nowhere and create a turnover. happened at least 6times last night.
he was the reason you lost to melbourne in the final last year, and part of the reason you lost tonight. he should have been benched after the first brain explosion last night, bad coaching.

Some opposition supporters are never pleased

Stkildonan couldn't have been any more magnanimous in defeat.

You're welcome to post here but as this is the St Kilda board we're more interested in analysing our own team and trying to come up with why we put in such a poor performance than turning it into a Brisbane Lions tribute thread.

Personally I thought the Lions were fantastic and impressed me no end. For the club to rebuild in such a short space of time is a tribute to the coaching and recruiting staff.

Now on to more important matters. ;)

For us it was pretty much a disasterous night. Hopefully we can put it down to a one off bad performance and not overanalyse things. We lost Max for at least another month and our weaknesses were shown up for all to see. On the positive side it's a venue we've only won at once in ten years and we only have 4 interstate matches left to come. We'll also look a far better team with Riewoldt to straighten us up and Bally in the middle of the ground. Kosi and Hayes are only going to get better, Fiora continued on with his good start to the season and Chipper stuck to his game against Brown and even though he conceded 5 goals showed he can match it with one of the genuine power forwards of the game.

Best to forget it and move on I think.

Found that to be a really disapointing effort last night. Our midfeild really struggled and Brisbane should be congratulated.

I can't wait till we get Riewoldt back in and Blake out. It will make and absolute world of difference. As for the next few weeks without both Hudghton and Maguire expect the opposition to really stretch our defence. We might be up for a couple of bad rounds. Hopefully we can work our way into some form, get some underdone players back in and get the top 22 in the team and playing some good football as soon as possible
