Recommitted Brody Mihocek [re-signed for 3 more years]

I personally want to get rid of all 3.

A team would only do that if they are rebuilding. Collingwood have the team to have a redhot go at the flag still, the forward line is just terrible. Unless you can replace those three with three ready to go players, ditching all three wouldn't work. Ditch Cox, get in Brown (Or Cameron.) Keep Degey if he drops his pay demands. With an actual good tall forward, Mihocek would work wonders.

He is 28 come next season and I feel we could land pick 20 or so for him. Maybe higher.

Each to their own opinion but I think that is optimistic given age and I am not sure why a top 8 team with a poor forward line would trade their most consistent and productive forward for a draft pick that may or may not make the team better in a few years:

Sam Philp
Riley Collier-Dawkins
Callum Coleman-Jones
Isaac Cumming
Brayden Fiorini
Jayden Laverde
Jarman Impey
Timothy Broomhead
Hayden Crozier

Pick 20 going back to 2010, any of them better value?

I want to land Logan McDonald. What is the point of sticking with stop gaps such as Brown, Mihocek & Cox who will all be 28+ come the start of next season when we could trade a few players to land someone who is relatively ready to go and will be around for the next 12.

Looking at pick 20 in isolation isn't the right way to show the value actually present at pick 20. There are plenty of good players drafted 2-3 picks either side. If you go back one year to 2009, you see Nat Fyfe was pick 20. Just about drafting the right player. Could always take a future 2nd and a current 2nd which helps us with landing daicos

The thing is, I don't think Mihocek can be replied upon as a key forward, or even as a 2nd KPF. He demolishes weaker opponents, and plays fine if played a mobile high forward, but he really struggles against elite KPDs in finals (which to be fair most forwards do, but him even more so).

I also don't want us to feel complacent with a solid but not great option in Mihocek, especially if it means we become lazy when pursuing a KPF, which we have.

If Mihocek gets us a pick in the teens or early 20s, I think that's a mutually beneficial outcome for us, Mihocek, and the recipient club. For us we can probably turn that pick + a little bit more for someone like Brown. Mihocek gets a pay rise and sets himself up financially. The recipient club gets a very storng and consistent contributor who is easily best 22, as long as he's not relied upon to take opposition's best forwards.

Fremantle I believe was the club that expressed interest in the first place, offering 3x 500k I believe?

In that case, the deal could look something like:

Brody Mihocek + Pick 14 for Pick 10 + Pick 28.

So essentially we trade Mihocek for pick 28 + a decent but not highly meaningful upgrade in the first round (especially with the top 5 of this draft having a HUGE seperation from the rest).

Mihocek can be quite damaging playing alongside Lobb and Taberner.

Pick 10 gets pushed out to pick 12/13, which should be enough to avoid a McInnes bid, which is likely to come 18-25, but this allows us to play it safe, just in a case a random club wants to mess with us.

DeGoey, Mihocek and Cox all together wouldn't be enough for McDonald.

Hows his record against McGovern?

Hows his record against McGovern?
His record against Mcgovern is solid. But on the other hand, Mcgovern has frequently left Mihocek as the direct opponent to assist with spoiling Cox. Similarly, Mcgovern has also hurt us badly through intercept marks and rebounding.

After all:

2018 regular season - 1.92 goals per game
2018 finals - 1.5 goals per game

2019 regular season - 1.64 goals per game
2019 finals - 0 goals per game

2020 regular season - 1.25 goals per game
2020 finals - 2.5 goals per game

Overall across 3 years:
Regular season - 1.58 goals per game
Finals - 1.37 goals per game

De Goey rises to the occasion during finals (obviously last game vs Geelong is an exception), Mihocek while not horrendous, is more of a flat track bully in comparison. Obviously it's also harder to score in the finals, that's normal, but the point stands regardless.

Pro, I think you're being very selective in your stats and analysis with regards to Brodie Mihocek. In comparison to JDG who often plays a lot closer to goals (and has been at the club playing AFL seniors for 6 seasons compared to BM's 3) AND has played as a forward who occasionally runs onball for his entire junior career. To compare a bloke who came to the club as a VFL Full back and due to injuries HAD to be thrown to the wolves and play CHF and who then became so successful at it that he is now one of the first picked every week...its a bit of a stretch.

Your assertion that JDG "rises to the occasion during finals"....yeah he did in 2018, but Checkers still kicked goals in every final that year as well. NEITHER of them kicked a goal in our 2019 finals campaign (though JDG only played one game compared to Checkers 2) and again this year Checkers kicked 5 goals to JDG's 2 in our two finals this year.

So, when you look at it....JDG should probably be expected to kick more goals than Checkers, He's more experienced, plays closer to goal and is probably more talented. Yet time after time Brodie Mihocek gets the job done. He plays the tougher role and he kicks goals on tough opponents.

Maybe you should move on one of your non productive forwards for Kelly and keep the one productive forward you have.
Honestly, moving on our most consistent forward for a guy who’s played half a game of senior footy...
I’m embarrassed by some of the dumb shit our boards posters come out with sometimes....

How am I being selective when my stats are literally over Mihocek's entire career lol...

Also wtf even is this? De Goey played a total of less than 1 quarter in the 2019 finals compaign, talking about "selective" LOL

So JDG's the better player by how many finals goals then? 3 is it??

Personally think he stays however

Look at Annexure D of the AFLs CBA 2017-2022 page 112

To save you time if Collingwood offer Mihocek a contract and he doesn’t accept he automatically qualifies as a delisted FA and can walk to any club as he has served more than 2 years on the rookie list.

I don’t think this says what you think it says:

(h) A Player who is a second year Rookie Player and receives an offer from his Current Club to be retained as a third year Rookie Player but does not accept that offer will be a Free Agent in the relevant year.

I don’t think this applies to Mihocek because he is a third year Rookie player and therefore can’t be listed again as a Rookie player. Therefore Collingwood would have to offer him a main list contract if they want to keep him. The rules do not then apply to making him a free agent. I am sure any club would need to trade for him, unless for some reason Collingwood didn’t offer him another contract, or chose to delist him.

Really want to retain Brody. A heart and soul type player who's not flashy but gives his all week in week out. It will be such a shame if he gets squeezed out. He will probably get higher offers but if we can offer him something fairly competitive in terms of dollars over 3 years I'd be disappointed if he chose to leave after we gave him his shot as a mature rookie pick.

I'd prefer us to try and move Cox (and his salary) out and try and add some additional support to Brody inside 50 so that he can be the 2nd or 3rd banana and not the main man.

After 3 years on a Rookie list earning wayyy less . Think he has paid back that favour
Now he needs to buy a house with his last 4 years of footy

I would be surprised if that is the case. The rule will be there to protect the lack of job security provided to a rookie by being on 1 year contracts on smaller than AFL average wages.

I would imagine the conclusion of two years on a rookie list will be treated as a trigger of a players rights

I agree wholeheartedly. He deserves to get a nice pay day after getting unders as a rookie. My point is that if the opposing offer isn't much more I'd be disappointed if he chose that.

That’s if we offer him a rookie spot. As soon as he’s offered a senior contract a trade must be made.

What is this assumption that he’s getting paid unders just because he’s been on the rookie list? We offered him a fair contract and he agreed to stay on the rookie list because it means $80k of his salary is not counted in the cap. Nothing more. People need to stop assuming he was being underpaid, he’s been earning significantly more than a standard rookie would have been.
