broncos withdraw inglis offer

Rabbitohs rumoured to have got him. Huge for Souths if true, although you have to wonder how they'd fit him in (unless Asotasi has been shipped off).

Being a Broncos fan, obviously I am hugely dissapointed in this. I hope they have a back up plan.

Seriously though, whats so difficult about paying an extra 30k when they are the richest club in the comp?

yeah i cant help but feel that the broncos are being a little bit too stubborn for their own good here, inglis is arguably the most damaging player in the game, for the sake of 100K and given they have lost folau you would think they could have worked something out

Greg Inglis left the Storm on the back of being closer/with his partner in Brisbane?

So why is he moving to Sydney then? Or France?

Poor old Greg, he doesn't seem to know what he is doing or what club he wants to go to.

Just my opinion, I think he really got unsettled when that assault charge was laid, then there was all that salary cap drama and his girlfriend getting a job in Brisbane, etc. etc.

He's all over the shop atm and probably getting so much advice from his family, elders, friends, he's not sure what he really wants.

It is not entirely difficult, don't hit ones' partner...

So he's going to Souths based on Andrew Forrest employing him for $100K as a - well, who knows what.

The salary cap is a joke - you can effectively pay players over the cap provided some wealthy supporter 'employs' them in some 3rd party deal.

Following the Storm debacle we now know what's legal and what's not - why they are legal is another matter. Certainly not ethical.

The AFL is just as bad. Obviously what has happened over the last 10 or so years is that the AFL and NRL have had to give ground on the salary cap because it is a 'restraint of trade' and wouldn't hold up in court.

To be honest, both the NRL and AFL should either remove the cap, or publicly list all players deals that are counted under the cap - salaries and 3rd party deals.

However only a small % of players receive big money by wealthy supporters/directors/owners of football clubs.

True, but if a club has excess money and wants to spend it on the cap, they can just give it to a supporter, who can then '3rd-party deal' a player.

There won't be too many of those deals at the small, poor clubs.

Lost respect for Inglis over this. Said he was leaving because his girlfriend had a job in Brisbane, made a handshake deal, is getting paid a tidy sum, then doesn't want to pay for his legal fees from his own money, so seeks an even tidier sum, and hang the girlfriend's Brisbane job. This is true mercenary behaviour. Of course he took his advice from Anthony Mundine so we could expect little else.

Was it Turner from the Storm who had a handshake deal with the Gold Coast, and the Storm had to offer the Gold Coast something to let him out of the deal?

Inglis would have left for a higher offer in two years anyway, so the Broncos are better off developing their own players.

Not a lot of luck for the Broncs with Hunt leaving to play AFL, Folau replacing him, then Folau leaving to play AFL, Inglis replacing him then reneging to feather his already substantial nest.

Folau replacing Hunt? When was the last time you watched a game of RL ODN?

International player replacing international player, not positional replacements. Point is they keep losing name players in odd circumstances.

AS for Inglis, gee imagine that, a professional went to the highest bidder ... ;)
Yes, a professional player with a handshake deal to receive a decent amount of coin anyway. Like Bomber Thompson his reason for leaving was not on the up and up either.

I'm a Qld Origin fanatic. GI is a big part of that. I have lost a little respect for him over this though.

Oh fair enough. You imagine my WTF? You normally seem to know your stuff but I'm thinking hang on a min? lol

Mark Thompson had a clause in his contract that allowed him to resign with a few weeks notice.

Where he went afterwards is largely irrelevant so long as he met his contractual obligations.

Geelong should have inserted a clause into the contract forbidding him moving onto a competitor.

Thompson took advantage of the poor contract (for themselves) that Geelong negotiated.

As a QLD fanatic, you've lost respect for him over this, yet seemingly not the fact he is not a QLD'er

Let's face it, as proven by his choice to play for QLD, not his actual state, GI has always been a mercenary.

Anyone suprised/dissapointed by this move is kidding themselves.

His contract is irrelevant. In this instance it is more about being disingenuous about his reasons.

Yeah but you always push this barrow. Again, my point is that GI plays for Queensland, I love the Queensland Origin guys so am biased in favour of them, but right now I think GI is ego tripping big time and I don't respect him as much as I previously did.

What's the renumeration like playing for Queensland compared to NSW? I don't think going to the highest bidder was an issue there, like it is with his club selection.

Anyone suprised/dissapointed by this move is kidding themselves.

That makes no sense. I'd say some Storm and Broncos supporters at the least would be entitled to be disappointed by the way this all unfolded.

All I can say is that we got rid of the right member of the Big 4.
The one more likely to extract every cent out of your salary cap anyway.

You are forgetting that the reason he is in this position to begin with is that the Storm cheated. If no cheating then Inglis would have stayed. Whilst this situation has not been handled too well by all parties it would not have begun if the Storm did not list creative accounting as a pre-requisite for a finance job in the football teams' back office.

No reason to get all precious either. He is entitled to get the best money he possibly can considering Rugby League is not a long term career. Yes it pays well now however in 20 years he won't be able to extract a cent from it.

Nature of the best.

I put it to you that if the Storm had not have cheated, then Inglis would have left a couple of years ago.

As for being entitled to get the best money he can, sure, on one level. On a football fan level, it doesn't look great if you decide to forego $600-$700k in favour of $800-$900k after already agreeing to the former. Earning that much money, the extra is not such a huge deal compared to reputation.
