If you are interested sometime, look at the complete list of draftees from 2008 onward (wikipedia have an easy to find list). There really aren't many good players either side of picks like Bollenhagen, Kriyatone, Ruffles, Roberton etc. I don't think our recruiting is as good as say Colingwoods, but you have people in there who would be getting paid a fortune by the black & white machine and have as much admin support as they could ask for as well as long established lines of spotters reaching into the furthest leagues of every state. You can't just replicate those kinds of systems overnight.
I'm satisfied we are working toward best practice in drafting and development and has been said by a few in this thread, anyone who can find something to complain about with the way the team performed in the latter part of last year is never going to be satisfied.

Given contract situation I had assumed Ibbotson was available for trade. Clearly we wanted another pick, and have traded from an area of list depth to get that.

Channel Eagle just ran a story on Broughton. He said that the club told him that he would be playing mainly in the WAFL as Sheridan and Crozier would be ahead of him. He was very gracious about the whole thing - thanked the club for giving him the opportunity and the fans for supporting him. Seemed very philosophical about it all.

So Ross, who never plays the kids, is vilified for telling one of the older players, in a position we have surplus, that in 2013 he thinks the kids will be getting games ahead of him. Ross is screwed either way isn't he?

What do Sheridan and Crozier have to do with Broughton's position? One is a midfielder, one is a half-forward, one is a small defender. Broughton is competing with the likes of Duffield, Ibbotson, Spurr in the backline ... and he has proven himself to be better than all of them in that role.

Broughton said in the channel 7 interview that Lyon didn't see him as a hbf and that he trained in the pre-season as a midfielder and hf. I'd say Lyon had already made up his mind on Broughton before he got here or pretty soon after.

I don't quite understand the love for Broughton.

He tended to play quite loosely bar against Stevie J, very much an on his own terms player, not overly fast, not overly penertrating by foot, just a good foot soldier.

Now we get a crack at a half decent kid to fill a hole/role on our list.

Makes perfect sense IMO.

He was good that game. You can't keep dining out on one game, though.

I reckon he had a place at Freo, but if the coach saw otherwise I don't have a problem. I reckon Lyon believes he has plenty of capable small defenders at his disposal and couldn't see where Broughton fit. So it was determined that this was the optimum time to cash in with a decent player. The only real quibble is whether Freo "cashed in" to full value. Either way, we move on.

Commentator on sport fm said he spoke to a few guys from melbourne who said 'if you don't fit into Ross's plans you don't fit in to Ross's plans'. End of story really, better get used to it.

I would of rather trade off Suban than Broughton. I actually rated GB. He looked like he could of played as a back pocket or inside mid. Still he was fighting mcphee for that back pocket spot. I will be angry if this turns out to be a mistake 2-3 years down the track and he have a habit of doing this.
