Brown Set to be Axed

Michael Gleeson | September 13, 2007 - 3:42PM

The Kangaroos are poised to drop experienced campaigner Leigh Brown for Saturday night's elimination semi-final against Hawthorn, replacing him with youngster Lachlan Hansen.

In the wake of the stunning 106-point qualifying final loss to ladder-leader Geelong last Sunday, Brown is expected to be one of the casualties at Arden Street.

Hansen, a key-position prospect and the number three draft pick in last year's national AFL draft, has played just one match in his debut season.
Brown, 25, took just two marks and had six possessions against the Cats at the MCG.

HUGE move. Brown dug his own grave on Sunday with his dropped mark on the HFF at the Punt Rd End. Whether Hansen contributes - we'll have to wait & see. I'm expecting zero by Hansen so anything he does will be a bonus.

Hard to know whether it's a good idea or not. The strange thing is that Hansen wasn't given some senior games late in the year, if he was in contention for the finals. Tough to ask him to step up now.

Says a fair bit about how Brown is rated going forward, but is infuriating considering how much better prepared Hansen would have been if this was done 3 months ago as it should have been. Hansen hasn't played a game of footy for a month.

2 matches.

Also, I would think that if Buddy is towelling up anyone we put on him, Hansen might be a last resort just to try and curb his influence. Otherwise he could line up against another one of the Hawks talls, or streatch the Hawks defence. At least one thing we know about Hansen is that he is couragous, which is more than we can say about Leroy.

It's sad to see Leroy going further backwards.

You would almost say replacing him with Hansen is a brave move, except that he was just so bad in the game from hell, swapping him with a bloke with a massive future is almost a no-brainer - despite his complete absence of experience - in the most important match we have played since the 2000 PF.

Is it wise putting a young kid like that in a sudden death final?

I suppose it will be a good test of the young blokes character. Hope he does well.

Where would he play?

this is beautiful, he will play forward, probably get the 4th or 5th best defender of hawthorns backline which is average

hopefully the kid can drift under the radar and bag a couple, and play a decent game, SHOULD NOT PLAY DOWN BACK IN HIS FIRST FINAL WHILE HE IS STILL 18/19 DEAN, dont do what u did 2 moran to him

indicates that they are confident jones will play. given hansen has played half-forward for tasmania all year, it is unlikely - one would hope - that they would go in with hansen and harding(?) who haven't played seniors since round two/at all this year.

or, most likely, hansen comes in for brown tonight, and brown comes in for jones on saturday and he is still hanging around stinking it up.

Gee, what a game to bring in the young kid.

I'd be bringing in the likes of Lower, Campbell and Thomas ahead of Hansen. Guys who have played senior football throughout the year.

But hey, then again I would have played Rawlings on Ablett and had Pratt line up on Chapman on Sunday, never introduced the likes of Sansbury and Green into our line throughout the season in the first place, and dropped Brown mid way thru the year and so on.

But I know Jack Schizen.

I bow to Mr 3 Year Contract.

tHEY COULD ALL COME IN! Lets hope.

hale - croad
petrie - gilham
edwards - brown (coz he got touched up by jones last time)
jones - guerra
hansen - ????????

i was thinkn birchall but lachie would be much to tall

This is a very big gamble.

Brown may be shit, but he has the frame at least to play back + forward.

Hansen is a rake, and showed he still has nerves when he dropped marks against Collingwood and a crucial one against Port that lead to them killing off our comeback.

The switch should've been done months ago. This is a huge game for such a raw recruit.

Didn't Hawthorn bring in Dermott Brereton for his finals debut against North and he booted 5 goal?, I can see some history repeating here if Hansen plays, what are Hansens odds for the Norm Smith?

Brown was giving us nothing.

Hansen gets the experience, and can lead up the wings and offer a target, which we are missing from Corey Jones.

Definatly a positive move. Kudos to Laidley.

The only role Hansen could be expected to play to a good enough level would be the lead up HFF role.

To me this indicates that Jones is out, but who knows.
