3) Growin’ Up
Album: Greetings from Asbury Park (1972)
Previous rank: 3 (SAME)

This completes the songs from Greetings, so anybody hanging out for Mary Queen of Arkansas, sorry, it’s not in the next two spots.

Another surprise in the top 10, and I’m sure for many of you, so high up.

Growin' Up is a joy to behold.

My first recollection of Growin’ Up goes back a few years. The first version of it I heard was the 1972 recording at Max’s in Kansas City. I liked it for a song that used only an acoustic guitar. Then I managed to find the version from the 1975-85 disc and finally got a copy of a version from The Reunion Tour which is my favourite. It’s a joyous song that keeps that feel throughout the track. When I listen to it, I feel like a kid again, and a little nostalgic.

This is the second song I listen to every morning after I wake up. Without fail.

The story in the middle is brilliant. It’s a must watch. It brings tears to my eyes every time.

The song really isn’t anything special at all. It doesn’t have anything to blow you away, but what Bruce does very well is simple, and sometimes, as we all know, less is more at times. For me, this is one of those cases. It’s a song that can cheer me up instantly at the worst of times.

And for those in Sydney, here's a flashback

I WAS THE COSMIC KID!

His stories during Growin' Up are great. I think the one on 1975-85 is my favorite.

"One of you wanted a lawyer, the other one wanted an author. Well tonight, you're both just gonna have to settle for rock 'n' roll.

The Clarence one for me is the best. Brings tears to my eyes. Great to watch.

The 1975-85 Live CD version came from a show at the Roxy Theater (US spelling) on 7/7/78. On that CD 8 of the first 11 songs came from that show. So many stories before he sang his songs from that show has stayed with me for so long as it was a bootleg record of that show that was sold and I got a copy on 30 years ago. The bootleg and the intro to Growin' Up is probably the single biggest reason I connected to Bruce's songs about growing up and finding your own place in life.

Love the lawyer story re the law suit after his motorcycle crash and the build up to the above quoted line.

"He looked at me and said oh man I gotta defend this? I look about exactly like the same way I do now ..... and I remember my lawyer telling me if I was a judge I'd find you guilty. I don't know for what, just for being there, I guess."

5) Incident On 57th Street
Album: The Wild, The Innocent & The E-Street Shuffle (1973)
Previous rank: 6 (UP 1)

I’m starting to sound like a bit of a broken record, but how a song like Incident came off Bruce’s second album, before he made it big, and when he was only 24 is astonishing.

From the opening chords on Roy’s piano, to Bruce’s bending on his Telecaster straight after, followed by those amazing lyrics, Incident is so good it’s almost hard to believe. And we can’t forget that outro either. Wow. Then for another 7-10 minutes we hear the story of Spanish Johnny.

.....

I feel privileged to have witnessed this live. Everybody was just captivated for the entire time. Nobody was shouting out the lyrics, nobody was yelling out BRUUUUUUUCE. Everybody respected the song and it was virtually silent the whole time he played. It was magical. I remember standing there and just thinking wow, I am actually seeing this, holy shit this is amazing.

And talk about great lyrics…

Well like a cool Romeo he made his moves, oh she looked so fine
Like a late Juliet she knew he'd never be true but then she really didn't mind
Upstairs a band was playin', the singer was singin' something about goin' home
She whispered, "Spanish Johnny, you can leave me tonight but just don't leave me alone"

Definitely one of my favourite Springsteen verses/lyrics, and one of my favourite of all time.

I honestly cannot translate to words how brilliant this is to see live. If you’ve seen it, you know what I am talking about.

And of course, the masterpiece those who were at Hanging Rock were lucky to witness.

The bold bits Cruyffy the bold bits is very well said. And whilst you need the whole verse the last line quoted is a classic.

There were a lot of the songs I wanted to see that I got to see Bruce perform in Oz. Several more than once. This was one of them but it was close to number 10 or 12 on my list rather than number 1.

I hadn't played Incident for about 15 years or so before last year when Cruyffy sent me his CD of bootleg and live recordings. I knew some of the words and tried to re learn it after I bought my tickets. So I started listening more closely and started to re appreciate it well properly this time. Maybe I was too young and stupid to fully appreciate it when I first heard it and subsequent playing of it in the 80's and 90's.

It truly is a masterpiece of a song and I don't know if it was because I drove back to Adelaide with my family who had Easter in Melbourne with family and to watch footy, but I couldn't get Spanish Johnny and Puerto Rican Jane out of my head on the drive back and then the next two or three weeks. As I posted in my concert review it was amazing to actually take 30 - 60 seconds during Bruce's solo and look at the crowd as he played his guitar and see so many faces were totally captivated by it and he had us all in the palm of his hands and the majority of the crowd didn't know the song either at all or very well. I was surprised how emotional I got during it.

I don't believe that over the years, I totally missed, that Incident is Bruce's compact version of West Side Story, probably my favourite musical all time, condensed in 8 to 10 minutes, until after I did some reading on the song after HR2.

I am going to be greedy and hope he plays it more than twice on his next tour and I get to see it again at least once.

The Boss listens to his fans. The sign he drag from the crowd either after Rosalita or Twist and Shout at HR2.

Wasn't my list, I just copied it.

And good words on Incident. Masterpiece.

Jack of All Trades was awesome. Stoked to be at the only show it was played. I'm praying he pulls out High Hopes again just for us. Those jokers in Europe didn't get a taste, but oh man it was sweet. I'd never heard the song going into RodLaver3, but I could tell instantly it was a winner. Have watched the one from Bris2 many, many times. Along with the acoustic Blinded by the Light, spewing I missed that one.

Thoughts on going for some pit tickets this time round? Was up in the stands for the last tour, thinking of venturing down with the madness for a show.

AAMI Park most likely won't be as accommodating as, say, Hanging Rock and Rod Laver Arena, although I'm not sure what the set up will be.

AAMI will have a bigger front GA than the arena shows but it won't be any less accommodating.

GA is the only way to go at a big stadium gig that's for sure.
