Midfielder Carroll keen to fulfil his AFL dream

24/09/2008 2:13:00 PM

THIS time last year, Western Jets midfielder Bryce Carroll was anything but an AFL prospect. The 18 year old was running around with the Doutta Stars before being spotted by Stars coach Brian Gray, who recommended he try out for the Jets this season.Carroll's AFL dreams were shattered early in his career when he was cast aside in a successful Calder Cannons team.
Now 12 months on, he is one of only two Jets, along with teammate and Barry Round medallist Mitchell Banner, to be invited to the AFL draft camp.
"I won't necessarily look at it as a lot of pressure," Carroll said. "But it's just a great opportunity. I've come this far and I probably wasn't expecting this 12 months ago when I was playing local football. I'll just take it as an opportunity and try the best I can."
The Sunbury resident, who studies at Essendon-Keilor Grammar, is determined to make his mark on the game.
He's the first to admit he's not a prolific ball winner, but he reads the play well, has brilliant marking ability and the will and determination to crash the packs.
He impressed Jets coach Steve Kretiuk with his athleticism and precise skills.
Carroll said his biggest lesson from Kretiuk had been to "take every chance you can and play the best you can".
He says his game hadn't changed remarkably since playing with the Doutta Stars, but can feel the improvement as he rises to a new level.
A Bombers fan, Carroll hopes to go to Essendon in the draft, but he's willing to go anywhere to realise his AFL dream.

these details from the AFL site-
NAME BRYCE CARROLL
ORIGINAL CLUB WESTERN JETS
DOB 25/06/1990
HEIGHT 184.5
WEIGHT 72.6
BIO Medium forward with good pace and solid overhead. Reads the play well and uses ball well by foot.
STATS Kicks: 8, Handballs: 3, Disposals: 12, Marks: 3, Goals: 1 (Averages from TAC Cup)

SO WE ADD ANOTHER MIDFIELDER TO OUR ALREADY SOLID MIDFIELD UNIT. HOPEFULLY WE CAN NOW ADD THAT RUCKMEN WE NEED TO OUR LIST. AND BEST AVAILABLE ASWELL..

Played mainly as a small forward. Little bit on the skinny side. Looks to be a midfield prospect in the future. Has good pace. Kicking can be a bit questionable , particualry his set shots. Has shown he knows where to lead up forward and can take a strong mark. His work rate and forward pressure has been good.

Played with and went to school with Brycey this year, very pleased we snapped him up!!
Amazingly was cut by Calder in 2007 and was going to play local footy at Doutta Stars in 2008.
Jets coach Steve Kretiuk swooped on him and the rest is history.
Goalkicking midfielder/ medium forward with great speed, agility, vertical leap (7th at draft camp) and skills.
But arguably his biggest strength is his marking, terrific one on one and overhead for his size.
Forward line pressure and tackling is also superb.
Works hard in the gym and should push for selection if the oppurtunity pops up.
Great pick:thumbsu:

"bryce came to us pretty raw. he was originally zoned to calder cannons but didn't even make their training squad. he missed a fair bit of the pre-season but showed a bit of natural talent. the one thing about bryce is that he's got the X factor about him, he's really quick, he's got a great leap, he's a good kick and he's outstanding overhead for his size. he probably lacked endurance and tended to fade out of games a fair bit. in patches he was outstanding during games and i think he'll be a lot better with a pre-season under his belt. he can play wing or half-forward and i suppose he might have come a little from left field, but you always get a couple of those at the draft"

western jets coach steve kretiuk

Sounds good. Glad they went for someone with some class. Just needs muscle and an engine.

Similar to Magin maybe.

Great attitude and fantastic work ethic will ensure he progresses further. Smart choice in moving from Ruperstwood and heading down to Douttas and then onto the Jets where he took his opportunity to impress. Great Decision Bombers !

Very happy to have him at Essendon. :thumbsu:
Collingwood,Hawks and Geelong were looking at him.
Collingwood had spoken to him a few times and invited him to train with them at the Lexus centre.
They are going to hate us even more now! :D

Looks like a good rookie list for 09..

I've always like the idea of grabbing a local kid, espeically when he's an Essendon supporter.

We've had some decent locals in the past as well, Mercuri, Misiti, Lloyd and Fletcher to name a few.

Yeah me too. That's one of main reasons why I was spewing Port snatched Trengove from us hehe.

Oh and add Andrew Welsh to that list too. Played his junior footy in the EDFL.

Bryce always supported 9thmond as a kid. Has spent a fair bit of time with hirdy since being overlooked in the main draft. While training with the Pies was running the tan with Hirdy and was seen by a number of influential maggies. I've since heard that the pies are floored by the bombers picking up the kid. Good luck Brycey.

Not sure where HFF_07 gets his info from but he is wrong. I have known Bryce and his family since he played his junior footy with Woodend before his family moved to Sunbury and began playing with Rupo. HFF_07 was right in the fact that we was willing to go anywhere to fullfill his dream. Bryce had been doing the pre season with Collingwood and was very impressed with the facilities and the way he was treated there. He thought that he was going there. Hope this clears some of the mire for Go Dons.

A Bomber supporter growing up, Carroll couldn’t believe his luck when Essendon selected the 185cm midfielder with selection five in the rookie draft.

“I couldn’t ask for a better club to come to. I barracked for Essendon growing up so I am very proud to be at the club.

My sister knows him and his family. She hopes Essendon are able to remove the influence of his parents, in footballing terms only. She doesn't think it's good.

Both of Bryces parents have had a huge influence on Bryces rapid rise in fortunes, but like so many other young sports people, if it wasn't far the committment and sacrifices that parents give to their kids then alot would fall off the radar. All I can say is good luck to Bryce and his family, as this will be the commencement of a great journey for the whole Carroll family. :D

You've got to be kidding me.
I know his father. Top people.
Biggest load of crap I have read.

Best of luck to Bryce and congrats to his parents...they are proud.
Carn the Bombers! :thumbsu:
