A great article in last weeks addy about how the cats need to forget about september and start concentrating on November. This is what I need to hear. Somebody who wants to make some hard decisions that best suit the club going forward. We need some QUALITY kids in the club and this is the year to get them. Trade Ling, Enright, S Johnson, Hunt, Playfair and Kingsley and get as many quality kids as we can. Along with Tom Hawkins the cats will be firing again with a year or 2. If we keep the current list the best we can hope for is a 4th or 5th place, becuase this list does not have the quality to go all the way.

You crack me up - you have said the same thing (as I have as well I might add) in about your last 30 postings!! I take it you want to trade Ling, Enright, S.Johnson, Hunt, PLAYFAIR, and Kingsley???!!!

You are putting all your eggs in one basket in relation to Hawkins. The kid could be very good, but he isn't even on our list yet.

The pressure on this kid when he comes in will be so high from some people that it will just be unfair.

you are a F#$%@!@ dumb :D:D:D:D. Thank god people like you dont run out club. Yeah I mean lets just trade the entire bloody list, sack the coach, move stadiums, change our bloody strip. One thing the club could do without is not half the bloody list but less dumb, pathetic, turncoat supporters such as yourself. Dig yourself a shallow grave and do us a favour...

What the club could really do without is supporters like you who just keep accepting mediocrity. Lets just pat the players on the back and tell them how good they are, tell the coach he is doing a great job and all will be fine next year. Next year, next year, next year. I am sick of hearing about next year. Turn the place upside down and start again. This is turning into a 10 year plan like Ron Barassi's at Melbourne. Get a reality check and go follow that great game of gridiron. Oh sorry, they trade players every year as well. Wasn't it you that said we should win every game and not accept coming 3rd or 4th. We are a great side you said. Well seems as if you were wrong again yank boy. P.s. if we just roll along as you suggest, you may as well stay in the us forever becuase we will never win anything.

When have i ever mentioned anything about changing stadiums ???

I do not like what is happening any more than anyone else. I hate it. But all I have EVER heard from you, even when we were on winning streaks, is stupid negative crap. So if these players are all :D:D:D:D then why would other clubs give us good picks, they wouldnt. So we go and trade 1/3 of our team for what, a bunch of second and third round draft picks. So where does this get us.

And there is no such game as gridiron, you are a moron.

All I ever hear from you is over the top praise of a side that is average and gave its all to finish 4th and 5th. I wouldn't need to be negative if you didn't go overboard in your praise of a team who has never won anything.

Have fun with your American football and I will have fun with my Australian football. Are you going to watch the world football in the next month ??
Did you ever see a game of that NSW/Qld football or is that Rugby ???

You sound like you would be suited to that crap american game. I can see it now. Scottydeewah just run into that brick wall head first and then do it again for the next 10 years. Great game. !@#$head.

I havent been heaping praise on the team.

Where has this american football crap come from, when have i ever said I like the NFL?

There's just one flaw in that argument. 4 years ago we thought Ling, Enright, S Johnson ,Hunt & Playfair were those quality kids. What if we do what you say and the kids we recruit over the next 2 years all turn out to be Charlie Gardiners? What if Tom Hawkins doesn't cut it? As anyone who reads my posts knows I'm a long way from being happy about the side but surely you drop players before you trade them.

Except for Gardiner of course.

Correction, you thought they were quality kids. Ling, Enright, Hunt and Playfair were all 3rd round picks or later. We need quality kids from the top 25. I would try and trade Ling, Enright, Playfair, Kingsley, Mackie and Hunt, but only if we could get quality 1st and 2nd round picks or a quality player in return. I wouldn't just let them go for anything. If we couldn't trade them I would keep them not delist them. Port were desperate for Enright the last 2 years (don't know why) so they might give up a 2nd round pick for him alone. You would get a 2nd round pick for Cameron Ling and I would be surprised if the crows or power wouldn't be interested in Mackie. Maybe for a swap involving a young Victorian returning home (Meesen). Who know what you would get for Kingsley and Playfair, but it's worth a try, isn't it. Maybe we could package our second pick and Playfair and Hunt for a late first round pick.

Enright's an interesting one. He's playing off the back flank right now but I remember the first part of last year (missed Rounds 10 onwards being overseas) that he was killing it playing in the middle. It's weird that he doesn't seem to be a part of the midfield rotations anymore. Anyone know why?

Ask our brainless idiot of a coach. The same genius who moved Mooney into the backline when he was nearly BOG.

He's also the same guy who thinks Charlie Gardiner is a footballer and Kent Kingsley has a heart.

Geez I'd love Buddha as a coach....doing a great job with the Falcons. He was hard and wouldn't put up with soft performances for a minute. We need a tough relentless attitude. We need our opponents to think twice when taking on our blokes for the loose ball and Buddha was second to none (except Gaz senior) when it came to this. He wouldn't put up with anything but 100% toughness and commitment and that maybe all we need....fear of the coaches wrath...we've got the skills for Christ's sake.

The grass is always greener......

Nobody's list is perfect (look at St Kilda), and neither is ours - it needs improvement but wholesale change is just trading one imperfect group for another and hoping for the best - the one thing you are forgeting is that the draft is a lottery - an early pick is no guarantee of a superstar (although the odds are of course higher) - look at our recent record:

pick

7 - Tenace
7 - Mackie
8 - Leigh Brockman
8 - Corey
5 - Stewart Devlin
8 - Bartel

31 - Chapman
Rookie list - Rooke

In fact most of our 100+ gamers came from later picks or trades.

Of course the odds are better the earlier the pick but to suggest that a strategy of trading 20% of the list for draft picks doesn't make a lot of sense.

Our problems are not that complicated:

We lack 1 or maybe 2 elite players who can lead by example, grab a game by the scruff of the neck

We lack consistent on field leadership

We lack fitness and are suffering from a greater no. of injuries that could be better managed - on off-field issue.

We got a little ahead of ourselves in terms of where we really were.

We lack confidence more than likely stemming from the above.

We let our expectations get ahead of where we are at the moment, we overachieved in 04 and 05. We are still a good developing young side that has a lot of years left to play - massive change would be just insane.

We need to get the most we can out of the rest of the season thru learning how to deal with the problems we have and to make some smart recruiting decisions in Nov to improve the list.

The system (and reality - I mean who is going to pick the half a doz players it is suggested we dump?) does not allow "quick fix strategies" such as what is being suggested.

I (and I think others) would be more interested in opinions on "sensible" trade strategies and likely targets in the draft rather than the cr@p being suggested here.

How can we possibly have "overachieved" when we only finished 4th and 5th. In my eyes those seasons were failures, something to be learnt from and
then improved upon.

There is no such thing as overachievement. I guess Lance Armstrong overachieved did he?

At the start of 04 were you really expecting to be challenging for a flag??

A realistic goal for 04 was making the 8 and possibly winning one final. We did a lot better - that is we "overachieved". It means we did better than was expected.

If Hawthorn made a prelim this year would you say they were a failure??

I think they would be rapt!! They would have "overachieved".

You are just not being realistic about where the club is in its development and ability. Having said that the answer is not sack everyone and start from scratch.

Huh?

Thats it. I am now on Malverns side in any ****ing discussion about football cause he has some F#@$ING IDEA!

GENIUS!

SENSEMAKER!

ahhh finaly someone who has an idea.

So you thought all through last year that Sydney were the standout team of the competition then? They surprised everyone by actually winning the flag when no none thought they would.

No Sydney were not the stand out side of last year but they are a very good side, they also have:
A mature seasoned list
Enough pace
Matchwinners in Goodes, Oloughlin, Hall, Davis, Williams
A stable coaching staff and off field support

They are a great model.

The only people that were surprised by Sydney winning a flag were idiots.

They were not the standout but they were certainly a contender.

Forget the "don't like the way they play - can't win a flag playing like that" cr@p in the media. They are a very good side that can play attacking footy when they need to and can bottle it up when they need too as well.

Look, maybe you don't like "overachieved" lets forget that for the moment - my point is that at the beginning of 04 a REALISTIC assessment of where we were as a team would have been that:
we were still a young inexperienced side
we didn't have an effective forward structure
we had a solid, if unremarkable midfield that got the job done
we lacked superstar players but we were pretty even spread of talent
we were at the point where a realistic goal would be making the 8 but we were still a way behind being a genuine flag threat

In 04 we played our @rse off, we played to the absolute best of our ability, we played to our strengths and we did a lot better than what would have been the realistic goal for the season.

But don't forget that there were also many times when we were found out, when a injuries showed that the depth people kept saying we had was fragile.

We did well to get to 4th and 5th in 04/05, better than expected - is that a failure? Had we made the 8 in 04 and won one final would that have been a failure? I don't - I think that it is part of the development of the side. I would have taken that and then as you said "something to be learnt from and
then improved upon."

Just because we made 4 and 5 doesn't mean we are suddenly a flag threat - that BS by Laidley "we've just been beaten by the premiership side" was just cr@p.

I am as gutted as the next guy but I am realistic about were the list (and the club) really is. And I don't think that some here are being realistic about what can actually be done to take the club further.

Lets learn, improve, develop the list to fix the obvious problems we all know exist, fix our poor off field fitness/medical problems, and keep working to be a strong professional club.
