Bulked up Power

This could go in one of the pre-season threads but given it's been a heightened topic of discussion among the media and supporters, deserves a closer look.

Ken Hinkley has debunked the notion that Port are a leaner side this year and he wants us to add muscle bulk.

Port Adelaide adding bulk
“We’re not leaner,’’ Hinkley said. “It’s a myth.
“It’s an absolute myth. Across the board, we’re actually heavier, by the numbers.
“I’ve heard the same story that we’re leaner because we’re training hard or we’re running hard but that’s not the fact.

I have to admit I've thought myself we look a bit leaner this year but considering the Geelong side Kenny was assistant at is built on the very broad backs of some strongly built players I would expect him to adhere to bigger stronger philosophy. Even the young Gold Coast team he was at previously looks like it spends a good amount of time in the weights room.

We look leaner but that doesnt mean we've dropped muscle mass. They all look ripped

The core group of players Boak, Gray, Hartlett, Wines, Lobbe, Westhoff, Ryder etc look perfectly fine & the few others that needed to put on some size is quite noticeable, Polec in particular I saw up close at family day looks like a proper mature AFL player now.

I'd say those that still look 'lean' like Young/Pittard who were examples cRowey mentioned just don't look the type that can put much size on on their frames, I guess we'll see today but I bet we're still able to run harder/longer than the Crows who've usually been a side to go overboard in the gym.

Nonsense! KeN has to be wrong, cos Stupid said on radio that the Power boys had dropped weight and were easily brushed aside! And we all know that Stupid is never wrong, right? :drunk:

What I like about Ken is he deals with facts, not trash like Crowey.

I actually thought Jasper had bulked up considerably.

Leaner is actually the right terminology to use here. We likely have a higher percentage of lean body mass and less body fat. It is quite possibly we weigh the same or slightly heavier than last year as muscle mass is slightly heavier than body fat. Our body composition would have changed, but it doesn't necessarily mean the scales change much.

Kane Cornes on AA said his body weight was with 1-2kg of last year. He said Port were concentrating more on functional muscle development rather than beach muscles.

I expect our players to bulk up a bit as the season goes on as the training running volume and intensity will drop off from pre-season levels.

The guys did a lot of TRX work in Dubai which backs up the 'functional development' pathway. They seem to be utilising exercises that make use of the stabilisers, such as dumbell work over machine work and TRX related exercises. Wouldn't surprise me if they hit the kettlebells a bit too along with using gymnast rings for things such as tricep dips as opposed to parallel bars.

Maybe I'm biased but me thinks our boys look magnificent.
Jane Wines agrees or did she say gorgeous.
Either way :D

I recently saw him IRL and he was massive. Much bigger than you think he is.

The Teal is slimming. I would like to see us a bit bigger because if we are going to beat the Hawks and Swans when it matters we need to be a bit stronger than we currently are and able to smash in and survive those bash and crash situations and still be able to run all day.

I can attest that kettlebells and rings are not used much. The problem with both of theses things is they are a skill to use them in itself. An afl player doesn't have enough time in the day to learn more skills. Sad but true. We need to teach them young!

And*

- it's preseason. All players at every club looked heaps more ripped and buffer than they did at the end of last season.

2 reasons.
1 - training workload - they are running more in a preseason week than season, more cardio = more calories burn't
2 - its summer - a tan makes you look shedloads bigger and leaner.... ever seen a photo of a bodybuilder ?
