Fantastic stuff from John last night. Sydney at the SCG is going to be interesting for him - do our forwards ever have a good day there?

How hard did he work to make sure he got back to present an option as we were streaming through the midfield? He outran the pace of our ball movement to be on the receiving end a couple of times.

How hard was everyone cheering when Toumpas was streaming forward and Butcher was 30m north of him completely free and also streaming forward - they both entered the 50 at the same time and Toumpas took the shot (which was the right thing to do even though he missed) - we were all screaming KICK IT TO BUTCH FARKIN

I saw him start that run just behind centre and kept my eye on him the whole time, it was great to see how much he put in just to make the option.

I agree though Toumpas was entitled to take the shot, he just fluffed it.

As much as the goals were great, the work around the ground was just as impressive.

Jarrad Schofield 5 in R1, 1999. Chad Cornes 4 in R2, 2006. Brett Ebert 4 in R8, 2007. Shaun Burgoyne 4 in round 2, 2008. Jay Schulz 4 in R14, 2014.
14 games at the SCG for a record of 3-11 although one of them is a loss to the Roos. We have scored 153.159 to 200.181 against Sydney at the SCG.

Liked that last goal of John's. He was technically fouling the full back as the ball was miles away and he was shoving the guy away with his hands. But they are never called. Love to see him play on Talia, at the worst he could irritate him.

It doesn't help when Wingard burn't him badly early 2nd qtr, choosing to ignore an open Butch 15m out in front
to instead have a snap with his wrong foot and miss btw! Just finished watching the replay and Butch's work
up the ground and his assists very impressive. Been in your corner for a long time Butch and really happy for you.
Back it up next week m8.
Well done Paul Stewart on 100 games.
Carn the Maggies at Alberton this arvo.
And Broadbent burnt him too - highlighted by Brereton.

I think that's symptomatic of us more broadly and not just of our trust in Butch.

We take bad options inside forward 50. We have Westhoff and Young passing off when they should goal from set shots and others kick long to the goalsquare automatically when they should lower their eyes.

If we got this right 80% as often as Hawthorn do, we would be world beaters.

With 2011 fading in my memory IMO that would have to be Butcher's best game, and that includes 2 SANFL games of his I rate highly. I know he scored a 4 and a 6 back then but some effective ruck and midfield work last night make that a more rounded game in my eyes.
I've no idea what the club has in mind if he has another few good ones. The list managers were probably looking at delisting him and relieving salary cap pressure.

He'd be on a pittance, that fat contract of 2011 is long gone.

Didn't he get a 1 year extension at the end of last year? He'd be on less than Kane Mitchell.

F@#k I probably made more money than Butcher last financial year.

I will only start to raise my eyebrows if he continues this for the next few weeks.
We all dream of him reproducing that game against Sydney or the Crows, but last night we saw something from Butcher that hadn't previously been shown: the ability to contribute throughout the game in every quarter.
Even in the third term when he seemed quieter after his purple patch in the second, he had two brilliant involvements without registering a disposal: the tap on and the run down tackle.

He hasn't ever produced a 20 disposal, 11 mark, 4 goal game at SANFL level before, so last night was an improvement on anything we've seen before.

It shows that he has it in him. Moreover the thing that seemed to draw it out of him was the need to play him in the ruck for a while and free him from his opponent and the goalsquare. It's the workrate up and down the ground that made Tredrea and Riewoldt great and that Sydney use to unshackle Buddy occasionally.

Let's also remember that Tom Lynch built into his current role for the Crows after a slow start to his career.

It replicates what we've seen the club do with him in the SANFL in the last 2 years.

As Tony Shaw stated several times through the game...there are not too many 197cm tall fwds in the comp and Butch can certainly take a strong grab. What is interesting about Butch's goal kicking is when he misses there is a lot said however last night alone Young misses 5, Boak from the square and another easy shot hits the post, Westhoff when kicking for goal you wouldn't put your house on it and that also applies to Robbie G and others.. After last night yes you look at the opposition but the underlining fact is Butch is capable (11 strong marks inside 50) chopping out in the ruck and has a huge presence within the group. Talk of delisting and or trading Butch and going after Vickery is just rubbish as I would have more faith in Butcher. Finally one can only hope that he is actually selected so he can perform and with the Power compared to the maggies he just needs to play his role. With selection and comparing Butch to Schultz obviously one is a better kick and that aside Butch is a better grab, more agile and can also play ruck etc

If it's a fit Schulz or a fit Butcher it's Schulz every time. But as the season draws to a close it's unlikely the selectors will ever face that decision again.

Butcher's goal kicking yips aren't going to go away. It's something that'll be there for ever however his work rate, ability to contest, ability to ruck and the fact that he's entering the prime with his body up for the rigours of AFL means we need to keep him.

Unfortunately Schulz's body is wrecked and who have we got coming through? Dougal's gone for the next 12 and Billy F still a bit off. Who's available to recruit that is half decent? Vickery, Woods or Daw? Can't really argue that they are an improvement on Butcher.

If you ignore the age difference.... yes.

It seems that Butcher will be on fiveAA tonight

This brings up a few thoughts:
a) have we just thrown him into the media too quickly, after just one good game?
b) will this ruin the mystique surrounding Butcher? I've only heard him speak once before and that was at the locker room (was the first and only time I've heard the word "barrack" used as a verb since 1985)
c) despite that, can't wait to hear him speak
d) what inappropriate label will Rowe throw at him? Racial, homophobic or misogynist?
