I think Butch needs to be groomed into the Jenkins type of forward where he works his opponent high up the ground then doubles back and sprints back towards an open goal where he can kick on the run or snap.

He is going to be way too fast for any tall defender and if a small is matched on him - Butch will out mark him every time, he is also very clean below his knees for ground ball gets.

Playing him as a high forward from CHF will reduce his need to have set shots from 25-30m out where he struggles... of coarse, players running past for the give and long running shot for goal is going to be needed to also reduce his set shots.

Its now or never for Butch to be played to his strengths - which has always been blatantly obvious is not set shots.

Look he struggles and can miss some easy shots but what irks me most and it has since our refusal to play him, all through the competitoin the so called elite or going to be elite forwards screw up these shots constantly but because they look better in their action doing it then they get away with it. The teams still play them though as the overall benefit far outweighs some misses.

Cloke
Daniher
Walker (constantly missing set shots)
Betts
Robbie Gray

**** the list goes on, set shots and being shit is a big club in the AFL amongst so called elites.

"Obviously his kicking needs to continue to improve and he tends to float in and out of games so he needs to be able to stick at it for a whole game." - Justin Westhoff

High praise indeed from The Hoff who is an authority in this regard.

Hoff's comments were a bit harsh really - maybe he's trying the tough love approach on Butch too. From memory they are good mates off-field.

It could be what Butcher has told him personally.

Have only just had the chance to watch last weekend's game. Listening to Shaw and Brereton discuss the possibility of Butch playing for another club next year, and specifically mentioning Brisbane, makes me realise just how much I want Butch to stay with Port.

40 goals from his first 30 games is a fair effort when one considers his troubles with set shots. Even if you take out his first 10 goals from those 4 matches in 2011, he is still going at a goal per game. Not bad for a guy who is so maligned for his efforts in front of the big sticks.

I have a confession. I recorded the game from Saturday night - I'll never watch it again in full, but I've already fast forwarded/rewound numerous times to the parts where Butch features. Finding that deft little tap to Robbie in the third quarter was pretty difficult while fast forwarding, but I got there - it was worth it, even if it ended with Boak slamming the ball into the goal-post from 1m out.

It's also noteworthy that over half of Butch's goals were kicked in 2011-2012, when we were, well you know.

Imagine what he would've done in a good team.

John Butcher on a private beach for two./I
want him to nibble on my ear and say

So what? What, are you saying you DON'T love John Butcher?

:D

(Edit: If anyone responds with, "Ah **** John Butcher", I'm comin' for 'em!)

Like to back Butcher against the Swans but I think he'll get taken apart by their defence. I can't see him beating Rampe or Grundy. My main worry is that he'll let his head drop, he's done this too often when he's getting beaten, he just doesn't make the effort. So long as he keeps competing, even if it means little in the scheme of things, would be a small personal win for John.

What you say is true but is it because he's been languishing in the Magpies for too long and has thought "what's the point,
wouldn't matter what I do". If he gets beaten v Sydney he wont be the first or the last to suffer that fate.
I'm sure he'll give it his all this w/end and play his role of competing and giving second efforts.
It can't be easy having the yips in front of goal, sneered at in sanfl games and afl ones too.
Heckled and goaded by baby boomer morons at suburban grounds and all the while keeping his cool.
Whether he's needed more than wanted by Ken the butch does give big time in his afl games.
Your right tho' he hasn't always given his all in the sanfl (like many of our other afl players when dropped) but what games
he has played at the highest level I haven't seen him go walkabout too often.

Hope you're right with that, I've seen scapegoat delistings and non-selections before. Bowen Lockwood and Donald Dickie come to mind, they failed to put in strong efforts in a few games and found themselves on the outside.
Would like to see Schulz back in with Butch, he looks like he's getting back to form and he's had a couple of good games at the SCG. Only one where he kicked multiple goals(4) but another where he played up the field well.

Bowen Lockwood retired after 50 games due to a back injury. I don't think he was ever on the "outside". He is a very poor example.
Donald Dickie was very poor defensively and wasn't really up to standard. He is a poor example.

Bowen Lockwood a scapegoat delisting and non-selection? Seriously?

I'd hardly call a guy that retired due to chronic back problems (bulging disks) a "scapegoat delisting"

Port Adelaide forward Bowen Lockwood has been forced into a premature retirement from football because of a chronic back problem."

At the end Bowen left because of his back problems. But supporters and even in some cases his coaches were unaware and were giving him heat because of what they saw as a lack of effort. With Donald Dickie I'd be more citing one straw that broke the camels' back and that was at Football Park v Footscray when he laid a weak bump on Chris Grant instead of tackling when he was right next to the boundary line. A tackle would have taken him over the line but the bump allowed Grant to step inside and kick a goal.

Some supporters may have been giving Lockwood heat but if our coaches weren't aware of his injuries, and I have seen nothing concrete to suggest they weren't, and Dickie was delisted for one missed tackle then it is surprising that we ever made it to a GF let alone won one with that coaching panel.

Hah. Plenty of chances. Sorry I'm not part of your Big Footy circle-jerk.

You should probably go outside every now and then. Asshat.

How does someone going outside tie in with John Butcher fairytale?

Maybe Dopamine was outside last Saturday night rather than sitting in front of his TV watching Butch's 20 disposal, 11 mark, 4 goal game?
