... I think his game was a little bit below average (in the literal sense). He really tried hard, there wasn't a single contest I recall where he didn't impose himself. To be honest the sight of someone able to do this in our forwardline was borderline nostalgic. He even managed to hurt a few opposition players and even made Haynes shit his pants when he was running at him in the last after a few contests with him earlier in the game. He got his hands to many incoming balls without ever really getting a piece of most of them. Which probably is an apt way of explaining how he was below his knees too, many sort of bobbled around without being able to one grab them. He did however take a couple crackers, not one grabbers but real strong contested marks with defenders mauling him. His leading was poor, too often not providing dummy leads and also dragging his player towards a teammate attempting a mark. He tackled well, and generally moved very well to attacking positions once the ball was on the ground. He had a free kick in the first which resulted in a bad miss from then he continued to just work and hit packs until the late in the game, where surprisingly to me he wasn't subbed off which was basically my favourite coaching move of the day. His second half was good, he didn't disappear as he had in previous seasons. He was the main player in basically the most memorable play this year where he had 3 involvements including two marks, hard running, a neat pass and tight angle clutch goal which was the turning point. He later had a strong mark and failed to make the distance. He did some of the hard and invaluable things so well yet still had his poor kicking and a few times he maybe could have clunked the grab (that's marking him harshly).

From a 25 game key forward it was a beyond acceptable game and on it alone, he should be selected for the season remainder. He showed all his promise as well as his downfalls in a single game. Probably his best game in his last 20. He has much to learn but that was never debated, he did as well as anyone could have asked for.
What a truly great analysis. I think it's a really good write-up for those of us who follow this stuff closely, not just dip in and out. The key thing is that he worked for 4 quarters and he looked the part, never dropped his head, and you capture that really well. :thumbsu:

Ben is a mate of mine, he's a genius and a nut rolled up in one, and I know he is keen to help Butch - the club just has to give him a buzz.

Not sure why they haven't, it might be worth it.
Reading this makes me wonder if the club has done everything it can to help butch. Our kicking is pretty crap all over the ground. Do we have a kicking coach? And if we do why does he still have a job?

That phrase captures the quality of the man. Major injuries, ridicule from opposition supporters which is magnified by the crap from Port supporters would have been soul destroying for most people.

After watching the replay, I believe Butch's contribution was well above average. Trying to pick up the pace of AFL and team structures is not something picked up a couple of minutes before the game.

Deserves at least a one year contract - warts and all.

When does it stop becoming the club's responsibility and some onus come on John? We did have all that analytical stuff a couple of years back, I remember it was videoed on PTV, measuring Butch's kicking action and ball drop. Obviously all that didn't help a bit. Is he the one who should be seeking mentoring?

I'm not even worried about his kicking. It either goes straight or it helicopters short, giving us a second chance. Better than a behind and giving the opposition the ball!

With more time and confidence, the straight kicks will become more frequent, although he will always have the occasional shank.

I really don't understand the hype of Butch's game. He did do a few nice things but the negatives outweighed them from where I was sitting.

Because that may have been the equivalent of James Bond throwing of the shackles just as he is about to run into the bandsaw and now going after the baddies.
If (and there are lots of ifs) he gets another game or two ..... if he plays anything like he did in a few games in 2011 in some of those ..... if he gets another year ...... if he becomes the player we thought he was going to be when we re-signed him in 2012 ..... then his selection for last week's game and the one goal he kicked will become a footy legend.
Of course without that romantic viewing of the story it wasn't that big a thing. But it seems most of us like the romance.

That's basically been the beating heart of this thread all year. Give him a proper go. Let him get up to speed. Let him build on something.

What's the worst that could happen? He proves the haters wrong? He proves the haters right?

At least we'll know.

Next player sponsorship we gun for Butcher ....
I actually know his sponsor from when I was part of the BigFooty representation at this year's player sponsors' dinner. He is a butcher (seriously) :D . His shop is only a few kms away and I drop in once every few weeks or so to buy a bit of stuff and we talk footy.

What would be the worst is if we delist Butcher just as he comes good and then explodes next year at another club.

I think that's called FOMO

"fear of missing out"

Meh.
Schulz plays, kicks 4 goals, sets up another one and we all say he played well.
Butcher kicks one plus sets up 4 more, as he did this week, and we all talk about his limitations.

Double meh.

We've already sponsored Butch once. I think BigFooty needs to work our sponsorship magic on Jasper Pittard next before it's too late.

If only BigFooty had been able to sponsor Toby Thurstans.
