No and they don't for Travis Cloke or Joe Fanniher or any other KPF, and they all miss the target completely from time to time.

Butcher is maligned because of the aesthetics, not the results.

Joe Fanniher

Has he reached 50 games yet? That's where I'd draw the line, 50 games, with at least 5 in a row. You can't burn high pick talls so quickly.

You give most draft picks 50 games before deciding if they are worth the investment and you will end up with a very average footy side.

Keep turning the list over until you find good players 'cause they'll show you in a lot less than 50 games if they have a future or not.

Not all, just the first round drafted, highly paid, key position players.

I'm certainly not saying Butch is a dead eye by any means but I think he gets a bad wrap because his kicking looks ungainly and that sticks in people's minds.

His actually accuracy though is OK compared to other KPFs.

Daniher for example has a career total of 100.79 which is only a conversion rate of 55% for shots that registered a score, whereas Butcher is travelling at 66%.

I really dont want to make an argument against Butch, I'll never lose faith in the guy, but for some strange reason I'm gonna do it anyway...

Some of the others are half-right by suggesting the stats dont tell the whole story, but they are wrong in focussing on complete misses. Butch is 40.20 at AFL level, which is highly respectable, but this stat is actually inflated by the fact that in his first 5/6 games, he holds 2nd place on the all-time AFL list of "Most Goals Without A Behind" with about 23 (Quick sidenote to the haters, from memory this period did not include a single "shocker" miss). So his reputation as an unreliable set shot has been forged on the back of 17.20 (+howlers) since that time, which is more understandable.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a Butch fan. If the decision was mine I'd retain him.

His kicking problems are longstanding. He kicked 2.9 for Mafra in a senior Grand Final before he was drafted. It's been 8 years now. His failings here are as much a failing of our coaches as him.

His kicking hurts every aspect of his game. He attacks the ball with more commitment when confident in his kicking. When not, is obvious he doesn't want the ball as much.

But kicking can be fixed much more easily than an inability to mark or a lack of speed or agility. Butch has these later traits in spades and now that he seems to be over his injury concerns he should be persevered with.

Making an argument against Jobu is bad and you should feel bad! :D

I knew he had a run but I didn't realise it was that long. Sure it might mean that his actual accuracy is closer to 50%, but even then he wouldn't be alone there.

But maybe it proves that the potential is there if he gets his head right.

Either way persistence is the key, both from him and us.

Posted in the changes thread but it might get lost

I wouldn't be that quick to say it's curtains. One look at the state of KPF depth chart makes me believe he's gonna be on another year.

2017 Key Forwards:
Dixon
Westhoff (LOL)
Howard (LTI)
Butcher
---
Possibly traded in KPF (who? better than Butcher?)
18 year old

Yes but your using logic in a port adelaide list management fight. You're doomed.

Bassett did just say that we don't have enough forward depth.

Brisbane will go past us like we are tied to a post in the next 2 years. Brisbane's current young forwards topped up with quality midfielders in the next 2 drafts.

I'm disappointed that Butch has been dropped after last week.

Only because he was not given any opportunity to perform in his last outing because of the structures put in place by the coaches. If we had won by 10 goals and Butch had not performed I would totally understand. But **** me dead he was fed like a sunni to the shia (or vice versa) because we set up so poorly.

It's on you Ken my friend.
