I'm not a Smith hater at all and like him in the team but no way should Butler be left out for him going on the preseason. Smith may well be one of those players that don't get up for preseason matches but he has been lazy. Although wasn't he talked up by the coaches before NAB cup about the off season he had?

Still, don't understand the move at all. A positive i guess is that the coaching staff have dropped someone they usually wouldn't which could mean trouble for A.Selwood!

Butler was NOT even close to one of our best in the GF. Was probably in the bottom 5 or so. Regardless, very interesting in his dropping as I thought he was definately in the 21.

This. Not sure how Smith's pre-season was good enough to displace Butler from the team who was a lock when fully fit last year.

I reckon this is a case of Butler being a little quite on field and maybe off.
Great player, we all know this but in the inner sanctroms of the club he looks like a quite reserved guy.

The players who show leadership on and off field get better chances regardless of skill and ability.
A Selwood looks like he has strong leadership and is vocal on field so that would be whats saving him as is the same with Beau Waters and their courage add to it.

Its these reasons that we might suffer because of it.

Butler might go to free agency next year if this is how we are treating him.:(

I can only think they opted for pace because with Butler, Waters, A Selwood etc down back they are good but all similar one paced.

Other than that i do believe butler is also better than smith atm but if you look at the smalls in the bulldogs forward line maybe the MC decided we needed a pacier defender down there.

Surely if you were going to drop one of Waters, Butler and A Selwood because of pace issues, you'd go for the one who can't kick and isn't vice-captain.

Yeah I'm not totally sure of the logic here, not because of the fact I think Selwood isn't best 22, but because there were times last year Butler looked one of the form medium defenders in the comp. Guess we'll just have to see tomorrow if it was the right call

Ashley Smith played well at Etihad last year and was definately picked for speed agaisnt the Bulldogs quick forward smalls.

Last year Smith had a great game in WAFL before being recalled to the senior team and played great.
Same thing might happen

His quick run will be damaging on the Etihad grass.

I am okay with that decision due to the speed of guys like Dalhause.

This is probably the case. Butler looked very slow against the Crows

Poor decision though, Butler is the most poised of all our defenders and this could be vital in a high intensity round 1 game

Who is there to tag for the Doggies? Boyd? Who cares if he gets it 50 times his disposal is shithouse.

im stating that is his quality over Butler and hes alot harder than him well, Im not saying he has better skills by foot or general play.

So I assume Adam is staying for tagging and Smith is added for pace... why would Smith come in and replace a tagger if hes not a tagger himself?

And Smith wouldnt replace Waters because Waters is a hard nut Smith isnt so Smith replaced a player who isnt tough which is Butler.

I trust the selection of Eagles most times on these forums we scream for a younger player to come back to play in the AFL and most of the time when that happens we are dissapointed.

Smith was also only dropped when injured late last season, defensively Smiths been good this preseason.
