Buying a second hand car

I am currently looking to buy a second hand car worth aprox $5000. When you buy a second hand car from the trading post or any other newspaper how can you check that the vehicle has not been stolen prior to buying it? What proof of purchase can you get when you buy a car privately? Has anyone else had any negative experiences or any tips when buying a car privately?

VicRoads have a vehicle security database or something alone those lines. You ring up, supply the Rego and Engine serial number and t hey can tell you if it's above board or not. Check their web site.

Definitely get the VIN no checked out and go from there.

Also get your own roadworthy done on the vehicle.

You have a better chance of getting the right car and the right paperwork for that car buying one that's on the side of the road or in the Trading Post.
