Pathetic captain. Mediocre cricketer. Somehow ascended to be Australian crickets saviour because we lost the absolute plot and became obsessed with being viewed as nice after two dickheads decided to mess with a ball.

Very clearly not a captains arseh*le. Langer only seems to care about him being a good spokesperson.

Bring back the mongrel. Who cares about being nice

We need somebody to do an Everly Brothers mash-up. I don't have the skill-set. Or the software!

this is all 'reactive'.

called for it at the end of last summer when smith was immediately eligible again.

interesting times ahead.

Starc was bad but Paine exarcebated his weaknesses with his captaincy, likewise with bowling Lyon as nauseum despite him being and staying non threatening and has to be worst on ground.

Cost us an ashes victory, will go down as our worst modern captain.

But he's a nice guy so...

The Australian cricket loving public need to make it clear that we actually want a competitive, hard edged Captain - not someone who is there for PR reasons.

Totally agree. Probably the worst captain since Kym Hughes.

It's always been the way on the BF cricket board.

He's done a reasonable job as captain.

He's far from a mediocre cricketer.

And it wasn't his fault he "ascended to be Australian cricket's saviour".

That's the problem when we lose and people get angry, the posting loses objectivity.

He's done a good job at bringing the team together after what happened in South Africa, but his match day tactics when the game is there to be won are dreadful. He was never intended to be a long term captain anyway. He should do what's right for the side and move himself on.

Na, I want the 11 nicest guys to go out there and show some elite honesty...

The problem with CA not being led by genuine Cricket people anymore.

The people who actually like cricket want a competitive, hard team - the people who sook about that don't give a **** about Cricket to start with, yet CA listens to them.

His job as captain from day one pretty much involved being nice and not doing anything to "shame" Australian cricket again. Results didn't matter in 2018, as long as he made Australia play in the "right" way.

His captaincy in England was saved by Steve Smith turning into Don Bradman. His captaincy in this series was very poor.

Batting wise he's only saved by the fact that he has been able to keep okay which makes him look good because other than Gilchrist Australia hasn't been renowned for keeper batsmen. As a batsmen he has been mediocre or poor his entire career.

I'm not saying it's his fault he ascended to be Australian cricket's saviour after the South African debacle. But that's exactly what has happened and he's been given a free ride because of it.

Agree - but he should be given credit for stepping in and getting things back on track after the sandpaper; but that should've been the length of his Captaincy.

You said he was a mediocre cricketer. Not batsman.

And he's not even a mediocre batsman either, that's just rubbish. He's scored over 6000 runs and averaged around 30 over a long first-class career. That doesn't put him in the Gilchrist category (of course) but mediocre/poor? Give me a break.

The major criticism which can be made of his batting is his inability to turn 50s into hundreds.

A test average of 32 with just 8 50s. I wouldn't say he's ever been anything special with the gloves. That is a mediocre cricketer in my eyes for an Australia test cricket player.

How many Australian wicketkeepers averaged more when they had the gloves? Is it only Gilchrist?

You can criticise his glovework and field placings and captaincy but his batting should be the least of our concerns with Paine.

That's a bit harsh, their team was at least B-
Kohli, Ashwin, Bumrah, Shami, Kumar and Jadeja. Basically their first choice bowling attack and their best batsmen.

From what I understand the players selected for this Test were selected because they were in the T20 and ODI squads lmfao. So they aren't even back ups for their Test team.
