Cricket Australia has refused to run an advertisement telling fans that ''alcohol and sport don't mix'', on the grounds it thinks they can mix perfectly well.

Healthway, the major sponsor of the Western Australian Cricket Association, was offered advertising along with all the other major state team sponsors at the Ryobi Cup one-day competition.

But the group was told its advertisement was not appropriate as it could impact on "other partners" of the game, said Mike Daube, from the McCusker Centre for Alcohol and Youth.

Another glorious moment for Cricket Australia.

Not too fussed to be honest, Healthway are extortionists when it comes to sport.

''It is better to engage with the reality that many fans enjoy a responsible drink than it is to turn them off with a prohibition message they don't believe."

Seems pretty reasonable.

I would have thought this conflict should have been seen coming from a mile away.

Given that a state association is being sponsored by an organization with a contrasting message to a major sponsor of the national body.

Didn't they have an add with Tony Greig commentating about a bloke drinking too much and his mates stepping in?

I know of sports in WA that have dumped the Healthway money, or are seriously considering it, because of the unrealistic demands Healthway are now making. Stuff like banning sale of soft drinks from the club bar. Any media stories about sports knocking back Healthways money should be taken with a grain of salt, because it's more likely over the fine print rather than the main slogan.
