In a moving tribute, one of John McCarthy's best friend's, Brent McCaffer has decided to take the number 3 jumper, which was worn by McCarthy before he departed Collingwood at the end of the 2011 season.

Despite being struck down with an ACL injury early in the 2012 preseason, McCaffer who wore #30 for Collingwood in their 2010 Premiership will honour is fallen mate by wearing his number.

It is not known if Port Adelaide will retire McCarthy's jumper, or allow one of his friends to also wear it in his memory.

There has also been talk between both Port Adelaide and Collingwood that a "John McCarthy" medal will be awarded to the best player on ground, when Collingwood and Port Adelaide play against each other each season.

Both teams are rallying for this to be approved by the AFL, and it's understood that the pies and power will play each other once a year, with the fixture to be alternated between Melbourne and Adelaide.

It would be a fitting tribute to a player well loved by his Collingwood and Port Adelaide family, to award a medal in his name.

So underrated this kid is.
hopefully can be in our 22 next year

You say he is so underrated then don't put him in the best 22?

Anyway, i think its a good decision personally and i hope it puts a smile on the McCarthy family, and helps him play better footy.

McCarthy had a wretched injury run so hope Macaffer doesn't inherit that as well. Otherwise, seeing Macaffer back in the team will be a buzz. He gives us options in defence and forward, and is a strong player who can mark and goal.

It's a better option than retiring the #3. I hope MacAffer smashes it this year in the new jumper.

Most in recent memory who've thrown on the #3 have had a horrid injury run. Hell, krak had it for a couple of months and did his ACL

Great gesture by the Caff and hopefully he can have an impact next season

I must admit that I like Caff more than he probably deserves. I just think that he's built for finals football when the speed is off and the need increases for sure hands and strength. He had a very good 2010 but thats a long time ago. I have a dream where he does serious damage to jordan lewis in 2013.

Agreed. I get that many don't understand the guernsey number hype - but it's a way to honor individual contributions to the club. Was of the opinion #3 should be retired for a year or two, but this is a much better result.
