Good close game so far, Eastern Defence holding up well despite Calder attacking hard.
QT
Calder 5.4 34
Eastern 4.2 26
Little 2.2, one goal from a bit of a dodgy free kick.
May, Maric, Jolley 1 goal each
Bate 2 for Eastern
Jesse D Smith and Hocking lead the possession counts with 11 each.

Tough gane with a fair amount of mistakes.

The midfield seems to be fairly loose on both sides while the forwards are generally on top so the delivery is very important at the moment.

Both Jesse Smiths starting to impose themselves in the second term, as is that blonde number 35 for Calder (forget him name, starts with a 'B'). Ranges can't get past Calder's halfback line, Cloke's injury leaves them a target man down.

EDIT - The name is Nick Becker, and he's BOG for mine.

Easterns didn't score, Calder kicked 2.10 to keep the door a bit ajar
Calder 7.14 56
Eastern 4.2 26

Cloke came back on the ground just before the siren
Jesse D and Becker doing very well for Calder, Betts been active but inaccurate.

23 inside 50s to six in that quarter (or something like that) for Calder and they kicked 2.10. Reminds me of the 1998 GF :(

Eastern are lucky not to be 10 goals down. Calder seem to have runners everywhere. Too many kicks to 2 on 1 contests coming out of Easterns backline.

Jesse D 25 possessions to 1/2 time. Becker giving Johnson a bath on the wing. Knights about 4 possessions and not sighted. Eastern need 3 more Bate clones to win this one. Jolly busy but can take the wrong option at times. Douglas excellent down back grabbing whatever Jesse W misses (Which isn't much)

Not a bad game, numerous skill errors but a very convincing win by the Cannons.

I thought both Jesse Smith's imposed themselves in the game. Jesse D with his hard attack on the ball and 35+ possessions, and Jesse W with his uncanny skills and domination within the backline.

I thought both Cloke and DeLuca had days to forget.

Betts and Becker also impressed, especially Betts' decision-making and pace with the ball.

It was great to have the TAC Grand Final played at a better time this year, and in some decent weather conditions as well.

For Eastern, Hocking's effort hasn't been mentioned too much. I thought he was one bloke who played a brilliant game in the losing side.

For Calder, obviously Jesse D Smith's game was brilliant, and Nick Becker did really well also. Can wheel onto the left foot and get into trouble sometimes but he is really the perfect size for a midfielder if he can step up to AFL level. I think he can.

I've jumped on the Gareth Bowes bandwagon for next year, he shows signs of being one to watch in 2004.

JD Smith absolutely blitzed it and not much more has to be said. Matt 'Chicken' Little also has a good game with four.

Great to see two Rupertswood players dominate.

From my viewings of Matt Little he is a very interesting draft proposition. I have seen him play 10 times this year (Including the U18 Champs and trial game). Up forward he can do some special things but whenever I have seen him moved to HBF or the Wing it is almost as if he loses his footy powers.

His main strengths are obviously his overhead marking and his ability to read the play up forward and get on the quick lead. The down side is he is poor when the ball hits the ground and he has to search for it on the ground away from goal. He looks quick on the lead but to me he looks slow when he has to run against an opponent to a loose ball. His running style certainly needs work as he is currently all arms and legs flailing everywhere.

Interesting that his starting opponents in the Finals series in Dalton (twice for Eastern mixed in with Kelleher at times) and O'Bryan (GP once) are certainly slow off the mark compared to Matt. Dalton is exceptionally slow off the mark and was even well beaten by Maric over the first 15.

In the games he has played HB or Wing he has fumbled and looked like he has no confidence in his abilities. He was easily pushed off the ball and his kicking faulted badly.

Tough call for Clubs. I wonder how he would go in a weaker team without the amount of supply he currently gets from the well drilled CC team.

who do people think will be drafted from these 2 teams after watching the granny?
Bate was very good I thought, 2nd quarter was excellent. Really turned it on to inspire his team with limited success. Took some very good grabs and work ethic was good too.
Betts was good when the ball hit the deck and applied some good pressure in the forward. Awesome goal at the start of the 2nd quarter but missed a few from there.
Becker and J.D Smith were easily best a field;I was disappointed with Knights' game yesterday.

Agree with all you wrote. I see him as being a bit like Nick Davis. He will have to try and make it as the 3rd tall forward and that can be hard work because there are only so many goals to go around and he won't be the main avenue to goal.

Physically he is very different to Medhurst but he plays a similar style based on leading and marking and not doing too much at ground level or defensively. I think most clubs would be nervous about building that type of forward line.

lets just say that matt little kicked 7 goals in a losing calder side to geelong during the year, he kicks goals no matter if his side is winning or losing and hes proven that so i dont know what use are on about. in 3-5 years time matt will be a focal point up forward as he will have put on some beef and more height as he just keeps growing, maybe a number 1 forward for a club like fremantle. jesse d smith dominated, should be enuf to get drafted on that performance alone.

He needs to add more to his game.
Too one dimensional for a mid size forward.
He has a lot of work to do.
I'd say thats what "use" were talking about.

Hocking was great but his direct opponent was Jesse D!

Knights at least bounced back in the 2nd half, which is more than most of his teammates did. I still think he is worth a late pick.

Impressed with Josh Wilson's final quarter up forward as well. Strikes me as a very good VFL player in the making.

Becker should be drafted - played well every time I've seen him this year. Is very much a wingman, but who cares, uses it well and finds it plenty of times.

JD Smith may have put himself in contention with that game. May did pretty well too.

JW Smith was sensational - would be a top 10 pick for sure if he was not going to North.

Maric and Lynden Dunn showed plenty as well. And I thought Bowes capped a good finals series with another great game.

As for the Ranges, disappointing. Hocking and Bate tried hard, but there was little else.

Here are some of my thoughts which will throw up a few different things and players.

Calder were to good. Their game plan and the way they use the ball, switch play and look for opponents upfield is second to none. A well-drilled unit. Eastern didn’t learn from the semi and continually kicked long to the ruckman.

Jesse D was excellent, plenty of ball and used it well. The only thing I noticed that was negative is that he failed to kick further than 40 metres twice in the second quarter while having shots. Deserved to be best on ground just in front of Becker

Becker – Was great early and consistent throughout the match. Beautiful kick to space. Will get drafted and will be a great pick up.

Looking forward to seeing Neaves progress next year. I believe he’s bottom age? With that size on him he will do some damage.
Young White also has a bit of toe and will keep a close eye on him next year.

For Eastern Bate tried hard and Hocking for a young bloke was great. Hockings problem was that JD Smith was his direct opponent.

Also not that it would have made a difference to the result but Burley should not have played. Clearly hampered by his injury allowing Dunn to gather a number of possessions in the first half as he couldn’t lay a tackle or mark with his arm in a cast.
Why Spangher after the job he did last week on Bonnadio was left on the bench in the first quarter and the wing on the second and not at least tried in the backline just doesn’t comprehend. He played on Dunn in the second half and whilst not doing much did keep him to 5 second half possessions.
Also why they went with Dalton on Little after it failed in the final two weeks back cost them early.
Also thought Eastern failed to react when Cloke went off in terms of restructuring the forward line.

Little is interesting, still undecided on his draft potential. The difference watching Dowler last week on the lead and Little this week was that Dowlers teamates couldn’t hit the side of a barnyard fence whereas Little’s either hit his chest or kicked it to where he was best positioned.

All in all Calder had to many skilled players and were always going to win. Will have more drafted than in previous years I reckon. I reckon there coaching staff should be commended on bringing through such a strong squad.

He was good, apart from that one dropped chest mark and an ill-fated five minute burst at fullback in the last quarter on Wilson. I haven't seen a lot of him living in Adelaide, but he strikes me as having a very Leo Barry sort of quality of reading the play and backing himself to run and carry the football out of defence. Whether his body develops like Barry's to enable him to play on larger forwards remains to be seen, maybe he'll develop more into a tallish onballer but I reckon the similarities are there.

I liked Nick Becker too. Obviously it remains to be seen how he'll go away from such a unit as Calder (as could be said for quite a few from that side), but I think he could be worth a later pick from a side like Essendon who could use a bloke who can just sit on a wing and hit targets by foot.

Got to remember Hocking is only 4 days off being a top age U/16 player.
Has a great future ahead of him.

Not questioning his talent. The kid will be a star and I've been a fan all year. Its just that it's easy to get carried away with your own game and forget that your opponent is pumping the ball inside your defensive fifty twice as much. I'm sure the backman were loving that. Just ask Mal Michael.

The kid will play metro next year and if he keeps up his form will go high in the draft in 2005.
