Player Watch Callum Brown (Delisted 2022)

In the short term, the answer to that question is a simple no. However, although we've got fabulous midfield depth in the best 22, outside of it we've only got Callum and Wills. It's good that we are getting games into Callum, both for what he might become in the future and for depth if injuries strike at the pointy end of the year.

With Sier still to return I think even short term we've got more options than just Brown and Wills. The development of Appleby and Murphy (IQ as well to a lesser extent) means we could free up any of Crisp, Aish or Maynard from defence to have a midfield run. JDG or Elliott could be freed up from F50 by players like Reid and Wells. I'd also add Daicos and T Brown to our developing mids.

. JDG, Crisp and possibly Maynard are the only ones that you've mentioned who I think are genuine midfield options at this stage and their all really important in their current roles, so it's something that I hope we would be very reluctant to do.

He didn’t finish as we would have liked, but I wanted to see some composure from him, some sign the game was slowing down for him... and while it happened in a stop-play situation it still happened as he won the ball and milked the clock.

I thought he again looked like he belonged out there today, and if he could drill a couple of those goals you’d have a performance that would be in the Rising Star nom conversation.

One of Brown's normal strengths is clean hands and I think that aspect deserted him Thursday, was very fumbly. I think it'll cost him and he'll be the 1 to be omitted for Elliott.

Elliott is already starting to get midfield rotations and Aish is a midfielder we're trying to develop into a defender so I'm not sure why you'd discount them. I also missed Thomas as an option.

I can't believe how much quicker Brown appears this year compared to last year.

I think that comes from his overall physical and endurance development. Likely even more improvement with another preseason, 2020 is when I think he'll start to consolidate a senior position.

He's shown a touch of class at times, if not composure.

I'm referring to proper mids not outside wingmen. I'm discounting Aish because I don't think he's good enough and Elliott because he's never looked likely when he's played midfield. Can play an outside wing, hhf role but we tried giving him genuine midfield time before his injuries and he didn't look the part.

He has, but as with all developing kids, his inconsistency will cost him more VFL time. It's not a bad thing.

And here I was thinking the midfield included 2x wingmen. Sorry, my bad.

Also includes a ruckmen, wouldn't be keen on playing any of the mentioned guys in the ruck either.

It's just a definitional thing, Bucks said the other day that his definition of the midfield includes the flankers as well as the wingmen, but to me the term is best used to describe the blokes who get in tight around the stoppages.

Me to, and I think all the players I mentioned have shown capacity to play starting centre square midfield. Of them, Aish is the only 1 who seems to be preferred on a wing rather than in the guts but even he has shown he's capable, won a flag as a 16 year old starting centre square in the SANFL. Happy for you to think otherwise.

I know it's harsh but with Mayne Sier Aish etc coming back he needs to be averaging more than 13 disposals, he's got some tricks though.

Just needs more midfield minutes, he's a natural midfielder. Moves so well in traffic, he has a great side step and his hands are first class. Struggles to make an impact on a forward flank with blokes like Elliott and JS darting around and demanding the ball.

At this stage he’s going well but will need to build on his involvement.

Tough guy. Doesn’t shirk anything.

At this stage he’s like an upgraded Blair.

But scope to surpass that.

The challenge will be to build his game so it’s compelling that he always plays.

Looks a likely time longer term. Great attitude.

When he had the footy he was as sharp as a tack. When he didn't have the footy, he worked his butt off to help us get it back. He's going to be an absolute ripper.

Brown - 7 tackles, he is getting better game by game and some really smart passes. He stays in for mine.
The Adams injury, Mayne & Sier a week or two away, yep stick, gets him valuable experience.

If he keeps performing, hard to push out.
