EXCLUSIVE: CAMERON Bruce has shocked Melbourne officials by walking out on the club. The veteran late today told Demons coach Dean Bailey he would not accept the one-year offer on the table.

Bruce is poised to nominate for the AFL national draft, with Hawthorn emerging as a surprise suitor.

The pre-season draft could be a fallback option, but Bruce's manager Ricky Nixon refused to go into detail.

I would not be as at 31 years old is just a bit on the Old Side

Yeah why not? might be 31 but still a quality player and if we could afford him would be a handy get for nothing, we have enough young players and would definatley add something to the side for a year or two.

Nah, not for us, would be on the edge of our best 22 now, and would want a 2 year contract.

He would only get in the way of our young players, and would also want a fair bit of cash to slip down to us in the PSD.

He won't be at Collingwood ever, so it's not even worth talking about.

Our list is sealed, bar 4 young draft picks and 4 rookies.

I've always thought he was a very classy player, though he seemed to drop off a bit last year.

Think overall our emphasis from here is probably youth, and possibly KPP after Jack leaving.

He'd likely be depth if he came to us I guess, which is probably not what he'd be looking at.

Sydney might be a good destination for Bruce. If he goes to a top 4 side I think he would possibly struggle to get a regular game but I think he would like to be in a competitive top 8 quality side to close out his career.

For Collingwood specifically it really is hard to guarantee a guy like Bruce 22+ games when we have such a strong best 22. He has left with the intention to get more games rather than less which is why I don't think we will be able to accomodate him.

Also for salary cap reasons if Bruce signs a 2 year contract that will really hurt us when we are looking to sign (Swan, Thomas, Pendlebury, Maxwell, O'Brien and N.Brown amongst others).

wouldnt have minded him a couple of years ago, but aside from the fact that hes 31, i dont see who he'd push out of the side.

Also as Knight mentioned, a 2 yr contract for Bruce would leave us a bit tighter in the cap

Don't see age as a barrier, we are in our window, would add valued class and experience to the group.

It's been discussed a lot but I think we lack that 'other' forward, a medium player who can roam the half-forward flank. Bruce would be perfect for this as Rounds and co. develop

So yeah, wouldn't mind him here.

EDIT: Was it he or Green who we were chasing a few years back?

No way he is washed up and struggled with Melbourne this year. There is no way he could break into a premiership team, we would be wasting a draft pick on him. He was good in his day and I rated him then but not now.

Cam Bruce > Blair. You could easily fit him in your best 22, he's all class.

Brad Dick > Cam Bruce. Dick is young, dual sided and applies excellent defensive pressure. Bruce is/does none of these. I'd also prefer to give Rounds those opportunities. So would say Krak > Cam Bruce

As Scott watters said for the GF "Ignore youth at your peril"

Good player but not what we'd be looking for. He doesn't want to be depth.

We'll get a salary cap squeeze in the next few years and Bruce would make that worse.

He's too old but if he nominated for the National Draft and we picked him up with pick 70+ I wouldn't complain. I rate him as a player but I can't see him playing for too long, so he's not worth much. I wouldn't be offering him a large contract, and I think if he nominated for the ND he'd probably be gone by the time we'd be prepared to pick him. But he would be good to have at the club for 2011.

Just where are we going to fit Cam Bruce in?

Seriously, he'd be a fringe player. Considering we have just added Tarrant and Krakouer, he would have no hope of regular senior footy which is what he is chasing. Youngsters like Dick, JMac, JT and Rounds are also pushing up the ranks.

Also, this doesn't include any impact his wage will have on the cap. We'd be better off using that wage to satisfy Swanny and Pendles.

Think Bruce might be amenable to more $, despite his public protestations to the contrary. Still, can't see him being anything but a clogger for our kids.

I think Bruce would be more than handy in a strong team. He can play, back, mid or forward so suits these new rules. The reason we got Tarrant was pretty much for these new rules and we are in a great spot to have another crack at a premiership. I would suggest he is more likely to go somewhere else, but if available & we can fit him in the salary cap we would be mad to ignore him.

There is a reason that the Dees offered him a year, because that is about all he has left in him to really offer something I reckon.

I would pass on him, we already have our mature aged rookie for next season (Tarrant).
