Gee mate. Huge call on replacing mackie like that.

I think Mackie is a bit underrated still. He is a massive piece of the defensive puzzle and, kinda like Kelly, is not really noticed until they aren't there….

I was one of those who had both feet firmly in the "keep Guthrie back" camp, after the pies game I reckon he could seriously be a top 10 midfielder.
THROW HIM IN THE MIDDLE!!!!

Im kinda in the same boat CS - I still think Cam should be in as a defender but I was really impressed by his MF efforts and he was more than effective.

I would kinda wait personally before just declaring he os the next MF answer. Id rather see him become a bit like Jimmy as a Mr fixit - by that I mean starting as a defender or a running off attacking defender but then being moved or rotated thru the MF as needed but not as a first preference. We are gonna have plenty of TAB ( time after Boris) to see what life is like without him. While he is here, Id like to see the guy that is best suited currently to replace him live in his hip pocket...

Im just not convinced yet that we can't cover Bundys MF absence with Hypen, Cowan, Stringer, Caddy, Trav even Bews or Thurlow.

I've wanted Guthrie to become a mid forever.
Never mind having Bundy and Motlop out, and Corey retired.

He could be the exact sort of defensively minded, attacking mid that we need.

And Caddy is already in.
So he's not covering Bundy.

Stop going back to these posts about players!! My heart dropped 5' because I thought we had another injury... Just off to have another drink to settle my nerves (good excuse- thanks!)

hes looked good this pre season.

i drafted him with my last pick in fnasty league.

good get i think flew under the radar.

do you guys think he will play more mid this year?
Yep that's why he's in my team. Ridiculous efficiency.

He is a good kick, but the DE% stats are a bit of a doddle for half-backs, in 2012 from memory Josh Hunt was the best in the comp. They get 100% for all the sideways/backways kicks, and for landing it 20 metres from their target on the wing if their target saves him by scrambling to beat his man to it; and unlike the forwards, they don't cop the 0% for 60-metre posters or 70-metre rushed behinds, or for doing the team thing and kicking it to a contest at the top of the square.

There's a bit of chicken and egg here though too - you tend to place blokes who can kick the ball well at half back (with good reason).

That's true, and he is definitely a good kick.
Nevertheless, the DE% stat on its own can generally be very misleading; and, of course, all defenders automatically rate higher than mids and forwards, for the reasons I mentioned, and because the way the game is now played mids and forwards are operating under pressure on average more often than defenders these days.
And don't get me started on hospital handpasses.
Or, the really fundamental flaw, namely that it measures efficiency per disposal rather than per possession, so that blokes who regularly get held up, pinged or go to ground without getting rid of it end up with better DE% than blokes who fight their way out of the pack and kick or handpass under pressure.

Sure. The main consequence of that is don't compare the DE of a mid with a half back or vice versa. Comparisons within position are generally fine though.

Yes to your first comment, not necessarily to your second, for the reasons outlined in my last para; compare, for example, Caddy who nearly always gets rid of it (albeit under pressure), and HSmith who often doesn't, with the result that HSmith's higher DE% is misleading. If they measured it by efficiency of disposal per possession, Caddy's rating would be much the same (maybe slightly lower), but HSmith's would plummet.

I'm content with "generally" fine. :)

You think Bundy can be replaced by Hypen, Cowan, Stringer, Bews or Thurlow. Really?

Put Guthrie in the midfield. Will have far far more impact on the game there.

It would be something if Enright went into the midfield and produced an All Australian season there in his autumn years wouldn't it?

I'd stick with Guthrie in the backline, he is developing nicely there.

Enright will run through the midfield at various times, and he will be damaging…I reckon Kelly and Guthrie will rotate thru half back/mid with him...

Guthrie may run with Sloane, at least some of the time, and maybe Hunt ditto with Dangerfield.

Hunt on Dangerfield….hmmmmm…I had him on Betts….sounds better to me! Tough ask to tag those two….MC have some decisions to make.

Boris on Betts I'd much prefer. Cops a lot of flack does big shorts Ed but he's a smart footballer and just not sure Hunt has the complete nous, as a defender, to keep him to under 3 or so goals whereas Boris can read his every thought and make the necessary adjustments as the game wears on.

Boris knows what Eddie had for breakfast, and he also knows where he will be on the ground in 10 minutes time.
