Re: Ling's Hammy

An after thought. Nice to read the following too:

Scott said injury-prone third-year forward Mitch Brown, who's coming off hauls of seven and five goals in the VFL, was getting closer and closer to senior selection along with young ruckman Nathan Vardy.

I hope they don't rush him back for the Pies next week.

Really needs to take the extra time and make sure he's 100 % right, don't want to see him become one week on one week off ala Mooney, extra time taken now will help.

Any likelihood of it being a bit of a furfy? (ie, resting him because it's against North at SS) and then you're in a position to play funny buggers with the ins and outs against the Pies next week?

If not, hope he gets it right for good.

anything's possible, but Ling doesn't seem to be the type to just sit out a week for "tactics".

This was my first thought as well

I hope that the club is not going to bring in Brown or Vardy this week. I want these guys to be in a position where if they play well, they will stay in the side, and I doubt the club would want either of them playing their 2nd game in front of 80-85k at the MCG.

Another few weeks in the VFL is not going to hurt either of them, I would be much happier with them getting an extended run in seniors mid year (and hopefully beyond).

Why? If you want to play at the top level you have to face top opposition eventually. Why wait? They might surprise us.

They might surprise us.

They also might cop a pasting on the biggest possible stage because they weren't quite ready and dent their confidence.

We are in a good W/L position and don't need to take the risk. I would prefer that they have a softer landing, build their confidence and then be in a better position to contribute when the whips are cracking at the end of the year.

Depends. If the alternative to Mitch Brown is Mooney I don't see what difference it's going to make. Unless Mooney can turn his season around I can't see him having any impact against Collingwood. Right now he would be getting a game on reputation because he's shown nothing on the field.

If Mooney cops a pasting on the big stage, there is no collateral damage. He is not a developing player that we are trying to nurture into being a solid contributor for the next 10 years.

As I said, I would rather Brown and Vardy get an extended run in the seniors in a few weeks and let them develop, rather than put them in position to fail spectacularly so early in their career. Especially when we have alternatives.

Apart from us losing.

Anyway, the argument works both ways.

Yes the kids can fail on the big stage, but set a challenge they can also succeed and it gives them massive confidence for the future. As our kids have shown so far this year, if you place faith in them, they may well deliver for you, so we shouldn't be so quick to look only at the pessimistic angle.

By contrast, how does it help a kid's confidence if you say 'no matter how good your form is right now and you're doing what we ask of you, we'd rather pick a bloke on one leg who can barely train most weeks because we have more faith in him (even in that state) to do a job than we have faith in you to do a job'. Like it or not that is the message you send if you continue to pick Mooney over say Brown while he continues to kick bags. Now if you leave both of them out that's a different argument, but if it's the former, the kid has to question himself as a result. As far as I'm concerned that's likely to dent a young player's confidence just as much, if not more, than being given an opportunity and struggling on the big stage.

Don't get me wrong, I do see some merit to your argument, but I don't think playing Mooney to protect the kids sends the right message. Either he gets fit and plays on his merits, or he shouldn't. Similarly when the kids do what's asked of them and perform, they should be rewarded with selection if they deserve it.

Who are the alternatives? We've got Hawkins and Podsiadly as key forwards in the seniors, and Hawkins is relieving Ottens in the ruck. Then there is Mooney, whose fitness is going to be far from certain for the remainder of the year. Outside of those three, we've got Brown and Vardy. As key forwards, there isn't anyone else.

For this week we have alternatives.

I am not saying that we shouldn't play Brown and Vardy all year, I am saying that I would prefer them to not debut until after the next 2 games.

I also see merit in what you are saying. I just don't agree with it.

Brown has hardly strung 3 games together over his career, and now that he is starting to perform I don't think it will hurt him to wait an extra couple of weeks. In all likelihood, the later he debuts, the better chance he will have of still being productive at the end of the season when we might really need him.

Patience is a virtue.

True, but remember they could just play him against North. There's no reason why he wouldn't be dropped the next week for Mooney for example.
