Murphy seems to be an automatic inclusion in most peoples teams for us this year, and is an outstanding prospect. He has good hands, and an accurate kick. he doesn't actually get heaps of the ball, but you do have confidence that he will make the most of the opportunities that he does get.

Cambell has had far less opportunity at AFL level than Murphy, and being from NZ is regarded as still learning the game. He has pace, is aggressive and seems to love making a hit on players who happen to be in his way, or defensively when the opposition have the ball. Has a booming left foot kick. I haven't seen a lot of him play, but have always felt a twinge of excitement when I have.

They are not going to play in the same forward line, all players being available. Pav, Tarrant, Longmuir, Murphy are the prefered tall combination.

Watching them in the NAB and intra-club I would not be able to rate Murphy above Cambell. Both were reasonable, neither outstanding, although I think Glass would either remember Cambell really well or not at all.

We are vulnerable in the ruck department, with only two ready ruckmen available in our squad, but with a future gun in Warnock coming through. Campbell to me seems a potential second string ruckman should an injury occur. Last year we used Polak and Gilmore in this situation.

Does anyone know if he has done this before? Does anyone else see the gap bewtween the two differently than what I have seen?

Campbell has performed better than Murphy in the intraclub and nab cup derby. Murphy is the more talented footballer, but that doesn't mean he should get a game ahead of Campbell.

After the performances of Campbell and Drum against the eagles I'm wondering why we traded 2 players and our first round pick for a key forward. If it is to free up Pavlich to spend time in the midfield then that is fine, but if our forward line is going to be Pavlich + Tarrant + Solomon + one of Campbell/Murphy/Drum then picking up Tarrant could have been a mistake.

Especially Drum who looks like a naturally skilled, disciplined, versatile, intelligent player. But he is very young and we are in premiership mode now. Right now. Not next year (although we will still be). Tarrant has made achieving a premiership this year more likely. If we get to the Finals, then I would be much more confident with expeirenced players having an impact than Campbell/Murphy/Drum.

Campbell is a lead out, straight at the ball, hands in front forward. That's it. No other strings to his bow.

Murphy has a heap of tricks and is miles ahead of Campbell - as we speak.

It might be different in a little while but would you rather Campbell got bigger and better somewhere else?

Tarrant is there to feed the forward line. He is not part of this discussion.

Tarrant is currently in a different class to all those young fellas, Dom, lets give him a couple of games before judging the trade. Murphy may one day be in the same class as Taz, we all hope

Certainly agree on that point.

Let's say though that Pavlich does a hammy and is out for 3 weeks. Campbell comes in and he and Murphy play really well for the 3 games together but Tarrant struggles. They won't send Tarrant to the wafl, so an inform key forward will have to make way for Pavlich to return.

Aslong as Tarrant plays well and we are winning games of footy I will be happy, but if we are losing or he struggles the pressure on him will be intense. The media love writing negative articles about the Fremantle football club (yesterdays back page is a perfect example).

Just clarifying, I am in no way suggesting any of these players should be traded. Campbell is doing fine for my liking. He has pretty good defensive skills which I think is another "trick" as you put it.

Agree that Tarrant will be leading big to the wings, marking strongly and sending it in to the others, fast. I also expect him to be handy in the forward line too because Pav will also lead up, and the more diversity we have up there the more dangerous they are. But if you want a to choose forward shooting for goal, then get it to Pav and Murphy.

You're right, but I can see the media getting into a frenzy if Tarrant is struggling while Campbell is kicking goals each week for the falcons.

I like the way Campbell attacks the ball though, he led hard and the physical presence of a half forward line consisting of Solomon Campbell Webster was one of the highlights of the game on Sunday night.

What do you expect Tarrant's role to be? Obviously there will lots of rotations, but I see his primary role being to start inside 50, lead up to the wing then double back towards goal. To be a success he needs to average around 15 possessions, 8 marks, 4 tackles and 2 goals a game. I don't think that is setting the bar too high.

His current career average is 14 disposals, 7.6 marks, 2 tackles, 1.8 goals.

The bar may be a little too high!

Thanks for the stats Gav.

Apart from the tackles I wasn't far off his career averages. Connolly always says that players reach their peak at 25-26, so Tarrant should be looking to improve those averages, especially since he will no longer play against the oppositions best defender.

Campbell has played occasionally in the ruck at West Perth & did alright. I'd like to see him given a chance at Centre Half Back, but neither West Perth nor the Dockers seem interested in trialling him there.

Murphy is by far a more naturally gifted player...just remember his final versus Melbourne people...he is going to be special

Yes you were spot on really.

For him to be a success our forward line needs to be more successful. I could see his stats dropping, and I expect Pav and Murphy's to improve as a trade off. In the end the total forward line stats have limitations on them, and Tarrant will not be the "go to" forward in the sane way as he had been at the Wobbles. The marks will be shared around more (with Pav being the main target, and Murph getting more too), as will the rest of the stats.

At the moment Murphy is a mile in front of Campbell. He is a better forward and can play back as well as he did on many occassions last season.
Gav,I may be wrong and maybe my old eyes are not working very well but,I wouldn't have said Campbell has pace.I would say after seeing him play his one game last year and the game last week that he was more of a plodder or lumberer. He is a big strong boy and has a bit of ability but not yet ready to take Taters spot.

True.
There were times last week where Campbell looked positively pedestrian.
He did some stuff in front of us where he also ran to the wrong spot and looked very slow on the chase.

He'll definately keep Murphy honest. If he starts to under perform and Campbell is killing it in the two's i'm sure the selection commitee will have no problems dropping him.

Particularly if we start losing games.

I agree, with pav and tarrant taking the best two defenders the pressure will on for him to make a impact.Campbell does look like being good in time.

I really like Murphy but he does need to get involved in the physical stuff.
He is great when he gets a run at a player and can take the spectacular mark.He is also a wonderful kick.
However I have yet to see him take a strong pack mark or a strong contested mark in a one on one situation. This is one area that he really needs to work on.
Campbell is very raw however he does show some vigour in the contest.
The good thing for the club is that we now have some depth and there is competion for positions.:D
