Just wanted to see what your thoughs were on Scott Camporeale, one year after he first came to the club. Last year he didnt add much to the Bombers squad predominately due to injury. If you had your time again would you still go with a 31 year old or in hind sight would it have been more beneficial to go with youth....?

What do bombers supported think of him? And what are his reports from pre-season?

Hindsight is a great thing. Its just unfortunate that he got injured for parts of the year, as he was a pretty classy player at the Blues, and we needed a couple of solid seasons out of him to give the young guys time to develope into AFL level footballers. Who knows, he might have a good year this year.
It cost us next to nothing to get him draft pick wise, and to replace him, we probably would have drafted a young kid late in the draft, who more than likely wouldn't have made the grade anyway.

He was worth it.

I dont think that had we used that pick late on in the draft that the player would have been any better than what we got out of camp. At least with campo he gives us some experience and is helping the younger group develop.

Austin Lucy didn't make it, and no rookies have been promoted so he's fine there.

The knowledge, experience and assistance he provided around the ground both in matches and at training were maybe not the main reason but a big reason we improved to top 6 in inside 50's, clearances and first possessions.

Agree , out of last years draft i doubt we would have got much more if we used a pick after Lucy instead of taking Campo.
This post pretty much sums it up as he has done a fair bit of work with the young blokes so even if he doesnt end up doing much for us on the ground he has helped us with our young midfielders.

Think he was worth a "free" pick - he certainly gave us some valuable service over the years. This being said however I think he has definitely seen his better days - would've been interesting to see if you guys would've picked him up in last PSD (should Michael have been unavailable) considering difference in ladder finish.

That is a shortsighted answer. Instead of picking Camporeale we could have gambled on a bottom age 17 year old and hoped that it hit paydirt. Recruiting Camporeale also meant that there are some good players we couldnt draft this year because he was on our list. I would prefer quite a few players who got drafted late this year and also in the rookie draft. Maybe we should have signed him for a year and assessed his worth. Though I hate the way he plays and admit I am biased in my opinion of him.

Matthew Allen was a very honest and genuine hard worker. He put his club before everythign else. It's a shame carlton were no good to him, and I'm glad Essendon gave him a lifeline.

As for Murphy, well..... he's had that many teams i can't remember where he started...

Camporeale will never, ever be as good for the Bombers as he was at Carlton. Not that he was a star, but he was good. The game is beyond him now, and I bet he's wishing he never left the blues.

:p ;)

He was paid money outside the cap and his contract was negotiated by Allison through the media like all of Allison's players. So he was plenty looked after in his time at Carlton and he didn't put the club before everything else IMO. I wouldn't have taken Mclaren in hindsight and Campo is no different given his age.

White, Thomas and Jackson were taken after him in the following drafts and all of them played senior footy last year.:thumbsu:

I believe Campo has been a real asset to the club.
When he was fir he played well despite a few poor judgments and turnovers.
When he's been injured he's helped out around the club and helped develop our future star midfielders.

he held the club to ransom on more than one occasion

Please do fill me in on the bottom aged kid that we could have picked from the 2005 draft that could have hit paydirt?
I dont see how it is short sigted considering we drafted 7 or 8 kids in both drafts. What is the problem with drafting a number of young midfielders and then an older bloke who can teach them a thing or two. Someone from outside our system. Have we really lost anything given we have drafted Stanton, Dyson,Nash,Lonergan,Monfires,Slattery,Jetta,Hislop,Davey,Houli,Reimers,Hocking in the last four drafts ? How many more mids do we need to or can develop in the same period of time.

Has Campo had an uninterupted pre-season?? What are the reports on him? Why didnt he play in the all-star game?

Campo played our first intra-club match and was pretty poor. I believe he then got injured, which is why he missed the second intra-club match and the all-stars match.

I was against the move then, and believe I've been justified since. It was not that I didn't (don't) think Campo can be a top player. Its that his recruitment didn't match where we really were as a club.

Although his recruitment (and Heff's) might have lost us a chance at a young kid who could develop, I'll agree that the odds of this aren't great. But its interesting the next midfielder we took (in the rookie draft) was Hocking, and after the Campo/Heff picks players like Howat, Jackson, White, Priddis and Stiller went. So although long shots, we might have got something out of those two picks.

My problem with the move was that I didn't believe we'd be playing finals in 2006 and possibly 2007, and therefore did not like a senior player (or players with Heffernen) pinching game time, development time, from young midfielders. The irony was that due to injuries a lot of the young midfielders got a go anyway => Nash, Slattery and Winderlich all played until injured, and Dempsey really wasn't ready.

However, I still think my argument was correct (certainly finishing outside the finals was), and would point out that Lonnergan might have got a lot more game time if Camp/Heff hadn't played, and that if we'd taken the next midfielder we did pick up in the PSD (Hocking), he would probably now have AFL game time in him (and he's looking quite good for a rookie this pre-season).

Campo was a class player brought to the club, but if you're not playing finals, and you have enough senior midfielders (in my mind we do), he just takes time from the youngsters, and costs you a chance at a long shot draftee.

The jinx will be on Campo this season. From memory, Allan and Murphy suffered second year blues in their time with us, Allan albeit due to injury.
