not a fossil yet, I hope - but I do remember sitting through loss after loss after loss in the mid to late 90s.
And then, watching Leigh Matthews coach 3 Premierships and 4 consecutive grand finals elsewhere - so he still had it, granted with some very generous leg up assistance from the AFL!

Leave the thread now, Kes - you're getting triggered.

100% we did. I still remember being at the footy with my Dad and he was yelling out to Tony Shaw - "did you get your knife back out of Leathals back?". He wasn't happy with it lol

Worst era in our history followed that. The biggest drought from making finals. Tony Shaw was a poor option.

We also repeated this error when we did the Malthouse/Buckley succession plan. Derailed a possible dynasty.

Don't agree on Malthouse Buckley

That succession plan is what won us the flag

The problem wasn't that, the problem was Mick and Ed being too stubborn and pig headed to set their egos aside and allow Mick to keep coaching beyond 2011 after Bucks offered to wait in the wings

Had Ed and Mick taken Bucks up on his offer after the 10 Flag, we go on to win god knows how many more

11 and 12 at minimum I reckon

What flag are your referring to?

We won 2010 and 2023 - neither can be attributed to the Malthouse / Buckley succession plan.

I don't recall Bucks offering to wait in the wings?

he came on as an assistant coach with the club during 2010, the year in which we won the premiership. So unless we are crediting mick as being solely responsible for our premiership success and discounting the contribution of our assistants, which included buckley, then yeah the succession plan helped deliver the 2010 flag

Not the right thread so excuse the derailment but in hindsight did we err by getting rid of Lethal at the end of 94? Seemed to have a bit in the tank for the next decade? I was too young to understand the goings on at the time. Guess we’ll never know anyway
I suspect there’d be one Premiership Pie who’d suggest we didn’t move him on soon enough.

See this is the goss a youngen from that era wants to know. I’ll follow up in the right channels
Basically, Lee was a micro manager who was driving everyone crazy. He was the best possible person to help break our premiership drought but after that, he lost his lustre. It happens

Yeah it does. And obviously he learnt to delegate better at Brissy and look at the result. Anyway let’s hope he’s the last recycled coach to win a flag hey Vossy. 😉

Yeah, it won us 10

The succession plan is what got Mick's ass into gear to actually recruit to win a flag. Seems pretty damn coincidental that we finally recruited an inside mid and a genuine ruckman the very first off season after the succession plan was announced

He mentioned it (I believe on SEN) either earlier this year or late last year. Heard from his own mouth myself. Said he offered to wait but the relationship between Mick and Ed was too fractured by that point.

In fact it might have been a more formal interview where he mentioned it

Yeah, it appears he mellowed out a bit at Brisbane. There have been plenty of good coaches come from lee's tutorlidge so he must have had something special

The Lions boys (Fly included) still quote Lethalisms
Fly has definitely brought that winners mentality with him from his success as a player with Lethal.

He was a "my way or the highway type bloke" but he had the ability to get everyone on his way. Some couldn't handle him and they paid the price. This is stuff I was told by ex players who I played with. We really did hit the jackpot when we got him probably the only bloke who could've helped break our drought

Shaw was ahead of his time unfortunately with how he coached, was never gonna work with that list of players.
Not sure the plan derailed it, you could look at it as Malthouse derailed it by knowingly playing injured players in the GF that cost us like Jolly and Reid.

I think the rumours of off field shenanigans destabilised his ability to remain at Collingwood after 1990/1991. Truth to the matter is a different thing but that’s a rumour that apparently contributed to his allegiance with the Club.

Before that, the drought breaking Coach could be the coach for as long as he wanted to.
