Pity there is a million playing Rugby and half a mill playing Netball. 40 K is nothing, and as I said you could get that number in Asia with the added plus of a bigger International market!

Care to provide me with your exact figures?

It is obvious country is 4 mill from memory. Most males follow the All Blacks so that is lets say 1mill and that is on the conservative side. Netball is the 2nd most popular sport with the Silver Ferns being massive over there, half a mill is very conservative as most females follow them!

No shit, but can you provide me with some actual figures rather "let's say..."

4 million in NZ, 5 million live in AUS.

It is obvious, look at the Rugby crowds even for NPC level they are massive. The whole country follows the sport practically and having worked there I know how much of a big deal rugby is. Afl will never work in NZ, it is no more than the lawn bowls of sport over there. It might however work if the teams were more exciting but even so 25k would be the most it would draw

Great, I'm sure it is. Can I have some genuine evidence and figures to back that up though?

Wrong im a kiwi and love aussie rules
Are you denying the fact that Kiwi's would be against a sport with the word Australian in as as their own? Also if you are a Kiwi and living here I don't think you count so AuckMel and Caveman72 nice try but you are both residents of Australia and have been around the Australian AFL culture. To start from scratch in NZ would be impossible as a viable and profitable business idea.

You and I both know that AFL would never, ever work in its current format over there and you are delusional if you think it would. The NRL is the perfect example of re-image itself since it did it has gone rather well. The NZ A-League side got cut due to lack of support and the current side is not doing much better.

Are you a resident of the land of the long white cloud?
So you know more about the country than those who originate from there?
Fair enough next you will be telling us we shag our sheep the wrong way . Something im guessing your an expert on as well all tjong sporting in NZ.
Time will tell. Local papers giving it a lot of press if the afl got serious and commited long term cant see why not.

Yeah nah

Even Super Rugby crowds don't seem particularly impressive.

FTR, Participation numbers (as in real playing numbers) for Rugby Union in New Zealand.

Link

New Zealand Rugby figures show that 148,483 men, women, and children throughout New Zealand registered to play rugby this year, slightly down (one percent) on the high of 2012 but representing a five percent rise over five years.

AFL NZ CEO Rob Vanstom told me in February that the total participants in the entire Australian Football code in NZ was 30,000 (85% in kiwikick), making it no more than 26,000 in Kiwikick.

A-League?
ARL (when the first NZ team entered)?
ANZ Championship?

All those A's stand for Australia
The A-League? Really which team the failed team or the second team who are still making a huge loss?

ARL - I always thought that the NZ sides came under and became popular under the Super League banner. Happy to be corrected on this though.

ANZ - Netball? Sorry never watched so cannot comment.

That would have to be the most immature reply I have read in a long time. If you want to play like that head to the Bay and leave us to have a mature discussion.

Still they have support... you didn't say would get enough support to keep the team alive, you said no support.

Nuh they joined the ARL in 95, they did move to Super League and sided there during that war, but first entered in the ARL.

ANZ - Netball? Sorry never watched so cannot comment.

Good comp... 5 NZ teams and 5 Aus teams compete... Best Netball comp in the world.

Fair enough you make good points although with you are splitting hairs a bit in regards to the A-League and I am pretty sure ANZ is also New Zealand in the name and therefore not a preexisting Aussie competition (something I feel the AFL would need to do in the long run should they want this to be a success).

Those sports also had some kind of ready made base of fans. AFL does not and is also very Aussie. You can tell by the general Kiwi reaction every single time someone mentions New Zealand becoming part of Australia that New Zealand likes being seen as it's own independent country and hates being grouped with Australia. While AFL still holds that "Aussie" feel about it I don't see AFL getting any kind of foothold over in NZ.

On the flip side of that though... the Kiwi's can't hate Aus too much, after all half there country lives here now...
Its only a matter of time before we invade and reclaim whats rightfully ours :p

Can't argue with you there. Although now that the Kiwi dollar is stronger they are going back by the plane load. Give it a few years and they will be back ;)

If the 40,000 figure is correct, that is astounding considering in Victoria there are approx 50,000 Auskick kids...

Population of NZ is approx 4mil and population of Vic is approx 5.5 mil so if the 40,000 figure is correct then they are getting a higher penetration of uptake than us!

Sounds like the kiwikick numbers are just as rubbery as the Auskick numbers...

There are a lot of sport lovers in NZ and I feel it is only a matter of time before (like me) they realize it is the best game in the world.

I love Rugby union with a passion and always will, but compared to the AFL it can be quite boring.
