...if that's possible. Aimed at Perth and Adelaide people (and to a lesser extent Melbourne folk): when the team from your city that you DON'T support is playing, especially in finals, do you support whoever is playing against them, coz you hate them so much, or does state pride come into it?????

Personally, state pride doesn't particularly come into it. It really depends on the team and whether or not i like them.

For instance, as a carlton supporter, i would naturally prefer brisbane beat collingwood in the grand final pure and simply, because i don't like them.

I can't believe the Victorians who are scared the A.F.L. has gone nuts and we shouldn't support interstate teams, it's a cycle. Eventually the Vics will be back on top IMO.

Exactly. If the Grand Final was Essendon vs. Fremantle, for example, being a Collingwood supporter, I would support Fremantle.
broadly, thats the main difference, it seems.

for west aussies, state generally loyalty overrides club loyalty.

but then again for all australians, loyalty to country overrides club loyalty. i know for some people here in england, thats not true.

(ie i hope gerrard kicks a hattrick and lampard pulls a hamstring)

I'd have to say I go for freo when they play other teams out of state pride. But its also cause of the fact that the night life in perth is better when the W.A teams win. On the whole people are happier and generally I notice a better atmosphere out on the town on the saturday night.

Only for Freagles like you!

For the one eyed nutters like the rest of us, it's just like Collingwood-Essendon.

Well it doesn't exactly override club loyalty but if you listen to WA's talkback radio you'll know that most people are willing to support both our teams to a certain extent. There are a few one-eyed supporters but more often than not it's us (WA) verses them (everyone else).

Our state patriotism and our identity have a lot to do with our attempt to secede. You'll notice that the us verses them mentality is drilled into West Australians by way of advertising and sales pitches, and the relatively common display of the state flag. Our promotion of all things WA made, owned and operated for their own sake is something you never see the likes of in the east.

For myself, I generally like the Dockers. I own a Freo scarf and I'll support them in just about anything but a derby, damn f***ing w***ers  Yeah, it's a love-hate thing.

There's a poll here, http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/showthread.php?t=271048 , on the topic of local rivalry and I'd really appreciate WA and SA participation.

Couldn't really care where a team comes from its more of a personal preference about the way they play and whether or not i like the coach.

I hate Richmond caus of Wallace, Collingwood caus of pretty much everyone there, but like Syndey for their spirit and Eagles just caus they have some special players.

Neither. Don't hate Fremantle but in same respect don't have any affinity with them because they're a WA team.

Example using this years final series:

Don't like Adelaide period
Detest Sydney because of their flooding and style of play
Like Bulldogs because they play good entertaining footy.
Don't mind Melbourne and St Kilda
Don't mind Freo because recently they've been playing attractive footy.

So I was really barracking for Freo when they played the Swans. I don't think a team that plays that sort of footy and winning is good for the game. So it's al about that rather than any WA thing.

Couldn't care less about the state rivalry thing and I cringe when people in the media bring it up.

There is no state pride for me, I hate quite a few of the Melbourne teams more than the Interstate ones. For Grand Finals I usually pick the team that hasn't won a premiership in a while.

As an Adelaidian living in Melbourne and supporting the Crows, I sometimes feel like I am constantly in a siege environment. The interstate bitterness shown by many Victorian fans (I know I am generalising here) is sometimes astounding and quite bewildering.

However, there is absolutely no way that I would follow Port, even on a state basis! It would be akin to asking a Carlton supporter to barrack for Collingwood. Port is the antithesis of the Crows, both in culture, heritage, supporter demographic, attitude, playing type, resources....basically everything! The only thing we share is a geographic location!

Personally, I follow the Crows as a footy side and I do not subscribe to this interstate rivalry issue. It is a national comp and IMO games are not played as a defacto State of origin format.

I will be barracking for the Weagles on Saturday, not because I have anything against the Swans, but because I believe Westies deserve the accolades as they have been the most consistent club in the league over the past 2 seasons.

I onoly hope it is a great game and worthy of showcasing AFL to the world.

Agree with the last bit. I usually end up going for the team that is down, so they come back and make it a great contest. I 'barrack for a good game', coz we seem to get so few 'great' Grannies.....

That would be a nightmare for me, the two worst teams in the competition, I hate Essendon and Fremantle just make me puke. Purple and green, their theme song and WTF is a docker? What kind of mascot is that?

Anyway for me a Victorian:

Would like these teams to win:

WB
St. Kilda
Carlton
Melbourne

Don't care really:

Hawthorn
Kangaroos
Collingwood

Hate these teams so don't want them to win:

Geelong
Essendon

Get the song ready for the weekend.

You have every right to be confident - reigning champions, fantastic forward line, maginificent coach, longer rest, weeks break, brownlow medalist, leo barry, etc but I just get the inkling we might just have the a teeny weenzy chance of beating you this time. It's only an inkling mind you.

I don't know why you think you'd get a consensus on this. Its like anything, different people have different opinions.

Some people will support the other local team, some will hate them with a passion. For me, Freo sit somewhere around the middle of the table - I'd support them against Essendon, Collingwood or Port for sure (and Sydney are getting there fast), but probably not against Brisbane, Kangaroos or the Bulldogs.

Agree. Freo aren't my most hated team but if it were a grand final they were in, I would be hoping the other team win because let's face it, if your own club can't win the flag, then you wan't it as far away as possible.

The next time a Victorian side gets in the Grand Final I will be supporting them no matter who it is................. except Carlton of course.

'twas merely a heading to hopefully get people's attention...

Basically, my SANFL loyalty is to Norwood, you are the equivalent of Carlton or Essendon in Adelaide. Port are the Magpies. We don't get along. Huge bitter histories that go back over a century, so its next to impossible for me to support Port. Although I will admit there are a number of younger Power players who I don't mind so much, like Pearce, Ebert and Symes, I don't think I can go so far as to actually support Port.

The 2004 GF was really hard for me, cos I hated Aker and was sick of Brisbane winning every year, but the idea of Port winning a flag sent shivers down my spine. I didn't even watch it.
