Sri Lanka are pressing ahead with an attempt to change the qualification rules in the event of a four-way tie in Group B.
If they lose to South Africa on Monday, and New Zealand beat Canada, the two winning teams would join Sri Lanka and Kenya on 16 points.

Kenya are already certain of a place in the Super Six phase and such a scenario would also see hosts South Africa progress.

Run rate would then determine whether Sri Lanka or New Zealand claim the final place - with Sri Lanka currently ahead.

But the Kiwis have a chance to substantially improve their rate in their final game.

And the Sri Lankans want the International Cricket Council to rule that their win over New Zealand earlier in the tournament should be the determining factor, not their respective run rates.

The Event Technical Committee (ETC) has already rejected a change to the tournament playing conditions.

Read ETC ruling
"Any reversion as suggested would operate unfairly and inconsistently," an ICC statement read.

Sri Lanka have now lodged an appeal against the decision, which is being considered by Justice Ahmed Ebrahim, formerly the Director of Public Prosecutions in Zimbabwe and an ICC Match Referee.

He is expected to reach a decision by 2100 GMT on Sunday.

Should Sri Lanka defeat South Africa, however, they would go through automatically and New Zealand would join them by beating the Canadians.

Excuse me BUT !!!! how can the rules and playing conditions (which I might add would have to have been agreed to by ALL countries prior to being put in place) be changed AFTER the event has started. OOPS sorry its Sri Lanka isnt it ???? and we all know how they are always victimised

If this appeal is upheld I for one (still ****ed off about the Lehmann, Latif inconsistency) will have watched my last game of international cricket

If the rules stated are too vague, the teams will challenge them to suit their own purposes. I think it's time to just scrap the horribly awkward head-to-head rule - the source of so much controversy last summer.

Sri Lanka are easily the biggest sooks in the cricket world.

Amen brother!! By the way, did anyone see over no. 49 in West Indies' innings against Sri Lanka? Greatest performance of baseball pitching ever witnessed on a cricket field. I don't think I need to say who the "bowler (?)" was.

I'd much rather the head-to-head rule than NRR. Don't reward teams for beating up the minnows.

unless i'm mistaken, that's three things you've said in the space of a few hours that i totally disagree with.

i don't see your point. all teams play each other. i admit that west indies were robbed due to the washout. but assuming they played and won that match, each "real" team had equal opportunity to beat up on the minnows, as well as play to the best of their abilities against the competitive sides.

head to head comparisons are a joke. NZ were not justified in making the VB finals in 01/02 due to head to head. why should their performances against Australia be more important than their performances against South Africa? NRR takes into consideration your performances against ALL opposition.
