I got lessons with my primary school a few years ago. All in vain im afraid. I can't swim for shit. 5 or 6 years didn't help me one bit. Generally i pick up on things pretty quickly. But **** me, swimming is hard. I know i should learn, seeing as how i spend a lot of time fishing. But it's just to hard.

I don't understand how some people can't swim. I've been able to swim for as long as I remember, I did lessons at primary school but hated them because they were boring. Even before that I could swim though.

You post on TLC a lot. Hence the inability to understand simple things.
But seriously, i just can't do it. I wish i could though.

Yeah same with me. Don't remember ever not being able to swim.

I would learn as soon as possible matey, beaches are awesome and you don't want to get into a situation where you need to swim to safety or something. Like your ship sinks or plane crashes into an ocean.

Same for me. I'm not a particularly strong swimmer and I don't really enjoy it, but I couldn't imagine not being able to swim. You get in the water, jump forward, kick your legs and swing your arms around!

Swimming is almost easier than walking. Just try and learn to float by holding ointo something on the edge of the pool, you will feel your body naturally float up to the surface. Then just let go of the edge, and once you have the floating part down pat, the rest is easy. Not to say floating is hard...

Im glad Mum gave me swimming lessons during childhood, Id be very embarassed if I couldnt swim I think :o

I can tread water, i think. I hope. I seem to sink in pools instantly. But when attempting to tread water in shallow water at beaches i go alright for 5 or so.

Don't worry, you're not the only one who can't swim. I was forced to do swimming lessons in primary school, and I hated every minute of it. I did take some private swimming lessons outside of school hours when I was still primary-school age, and I think I might be able to if I was ever forced to swim, but I'll never go swimming just for the sake of it.

I've never been an outdoors kind of person - when it's hot, I don't go to the beach or the pool, I lie on the couch in front of the air conditioner.

I'm not a great swimmer. Certainly not a lap swimmer. I can swim well enough that I won't drown and I'm fine at the beach, even the odd rip I've got out of fine (although they tend to be more about the brain then strength unless you're in reefy or rocky areas)

Having said that, I wouldn't mind taking lessons to become better/coordinated

I'd like to swim in a tank filled with Farmers Union Iced Coffee:)

I dont think there would be much swimming happening.

I basically just got given swimming lessons because of the safety factor, took it sorta serious for a while, but yeah once I got to about 14 it was...meh! Now I look back on my younger years, and think dam, some of those chicks on the national swim team are hot! Why the **** did you stop swimming!

Then why am i so shit and struggle??
Maybe it's because you panic, the main thing when you get into water is to not panic, if you can stay calm and just tread water you should be fine.

i got taught once: when i was about 5 (even then it was enough to show people i could float for 20 metres and not much more). Don't think i've been near water in great masses since i was about 10. (i live in the right city for it though)

I have this great fear of water though: about the only thing i can do with water is drink it and wash my hands. My showers last about 3 minutes each morning: enough to wash my hair and get out of there basically.

Would i be able to swim if i tried: dunno. i've heard it's like riding a bike, but even after it has been well over 10 years since i tried - i would not have a clue. i highly doubt it.

I can't swim but my soul won't drown.

I can swim.

But I am not a great swimmer.

On a side note I had a fear of taking my feet off the bottom of the pool when I was young (thus afraid of deep water) and that set me back a few years when I was taking those compulsory swimming lessons at primary school.

How can you not swim? Kick and rotate your arms and off you go. I go to the beach just about every morning so it comes second nature, I never actually think about 'how to swim'.

I'm a swim teacher and what HBK said is far and away the most common thing for someone who can't swim - and is older than a child.

Relax. :thumbsu:
