Fair to admit that we have a few good quality fringe players. Lang, Kersten, GHS, Murdoch, Smedts, Vardy to name a few. Other guys in the seniors who may have moved down the midfield pecking order, and a couple of younger guys showing some promise. Menzel and McCarthy must be accruing some value. May be a battle to keep them all at the cattery.
Who out of this group is most likely to be poached ? Any whispers? I know there is speculation around Vardy. Could we get some trade value out of someone like Murdoch, who may have run his race.
Just starting a speculative thread to fill the void of the next week or so ;)

It's odd that they gave GHS such a long contract. He wasn't getting games in a weaker side last year, and I'd say this year that he's been further surpassed by others. Dangerfield, Scott Selwood, Menegola have all come into the midfield, and in the short-term, there wouldn't be a lot of room opening up there.

Murdoch, Vardy and Kersten may be traded. The latter two seem likely to get poached and the former may be trade bait.

Like Cockatoo, Lang should keep improving and will hopefully find more consistency in performance and weed out some of the things that let his game down next year. Certainly not a player you'd want to give up.

Depth firstly, only in hindsight have Menegola and maybe Selwood worked out, both could have done nothing for us this year too.
Also they backed GHS to improve in areas of his game he needed to, he has a little but not enough to force his way into the 22.
Also he's a ripper lad around the club, sometimes you want those types to stick around.

I'd like to keep Kersten and Lang. GHS, Smedts, Vardy and Murdoch I'm happy enough to see go. If we could snag a pick in the 30's for any of these four we're doing well.

Realistically Geelong have had a pretty good run with injuries this year. They've had players miss games, some a lot like Selwood and Menegola missing 2/3s of the season, but there hasn't been a stage where there has been a big clump of players miss for a stretch together.

Hopefully Enright plays on but conceivably there could be 3 players from the 22 on the weekend in Enright, Lonergan, Bartel that finish up.

So outside the weekends team put Henderson, Selwood and Lang in.

That would leave Cockatoo and Thurlow coming off a knee as strong AFL depth heading into 2017.

Now add 6 injuries to the 22 and think who the next 4 in line would be that would be capable of playing AFL each week. It's from that pool of Kersten, GHS, Murdoch, Smedts, Vardy. If you clean them out too much, then who is in line after that? It's Gardner, Parsons etc and way too soon to be relying on them for depth. I think they can afford to let go of a couple, preferably the ones that hold some value, but they can't go and chop them all like some people want.

True enough, but how many of these guys, who are all obviously elite sports people (or aspire to be) would be happy just being 'a depth' player, especially if they feel they would get more of a crack at another club.
My theory on some of the longer sign ups is that maybe they are told that they will most likely be fringe players. The sweetener is that they they have some longer term assurance.

Assuming we are still right in contention next year and Bartel & Lonergan call it a day..

Thurlow Kolodjashnij Enright
Ruggles Henderson Taylor
Duncan Guthrie Cowan
Caddy Stanley Motlop
Menzel Hawkins McCarthy
Smith Selwood Dangerfield
Menegola Blicavs Kersten SSelwood

Still gives us in reserve -

Backs - Mackie, Bews down back with Gardiner coming through.
Mids - Smedts, Cockatoo & Lang
Forward - Clark as a tall, Gregson
Rucks - Clark and Blicavs can step up, Lucey and Read developing

That leaves GHS, Murdoch, Vardy as those well back in the pecking order and with some trade currency. Would need an injury crisis of epic proportions to call on them and if that's the case you may as well play the kids anyway. Bite the bullet and get a few more kids to complement Parsons and Hayball plus a couple of mature agers. Menegola and Ruggles might be exceptions but happy to try for 1 or 2 more particularly from our own VFL.

Lots of calls to be made at year end. Suspect that the job will be made easier by Kersten, Vardy possibly Murdoch, Smedts, GHS asking for release. Some 2nd round trade value for those who are on contract.

On the basis of using up spots - do we give Bates and Delaney extra time? Both show potential but are massively injury prone - real risk to give them another season with not much prospect of playing firsts for them to get injured anyway. I would probably put Read in question as well - with development time for rucks at 4-6 years, he is miles off. A fit and improving Lucey gives us cover.

No second rounders there.

This is where I think our good vfl list provides answers, guys like House definitely are raw and need developing but Stewart and Atkins to name 2 could easily play round 1 next year in whatever afl side they get drafted to and be physically ready to impact, so there is your depth replacement. Hopefully we can draft some of those guys late in the ND or RD this year as we did with Menegola and Ruggles, which allows us to trade some of our current depth guys to improve our draft position.

The other aspect of it is we are a club that tends to treat players well by helping them find new homes when its best for them. Some of those guys need a new home to get afl opportunities so if we want that I can't see us blocking it and holding them to their contracts, so long as we get something reasonable in return.

Yes, heard the same. Won't be offered a new contract. Thankfully.

Frankly I think not offering Clark a new contract when we have yet to re-sign any of Vardy Kersten or Stanley is a bit stupid and especially since the first two are also looking at possible trade options for new homes. I am not saying I think Clark will play in the best 22 again but there is something to be said for depth across each line in a premiership window. If we end up replacing Clark with the other Clarke (the Freo one) as our cheap depth option I will be pretty underwhelmed.

Just been informed that Clark has played his last game for the club so maybe Vardy does get another year..

Vardy was always going to get offered another year regardless the question is whether he wants to take it or wants to request a trade elsewhere. From what I am hearing the latter is the likely outcome. I am a little more confident on Kersten but not by a lot.

Something happened with Clark, the club and certain senior players, it was all played down but sounds like he's not wanted at the club anymore.

The guy is finished, I wish him well with his ongoing battle with depression, unfortunate we never really saw his best footy again.
