Capper.

So much better than Howe, and that's not having a go at Howe.

You don't kick 100 in a season unless you're an absolute star.

The game could use some characters again.
You do realize you can't use your hands to 'get up there' now days don't you?

I remember Peter McKenna commentating one of Capper's very early games, may have even been his first.

Vividly remember McKenna saying "There's something about young Capper" as he was bouncin' around Capper style.

He was right....in a few ways.

Ironically about the only kick he made that went further than 30 metres - from memory on a boggy Carrara oval too.
No it was actually at Princess Park. You are right though, thats the only time he ever kicked further than about 40m . He had a stiff wind behind him, too.

Yep. Was there. Muddy ball. Wind behind him. From 50 at least. End of Wallsy.

There is a link to his appearance on open mike
geez not too many people have a nice word to say about Brad Hardie. The only time ive heard John Worsfold get riled up in the media was talking to Hardie on radio. And now we have Cappers revelation about Hardie would rather kick the ball over Cappers head because obviously Hardie had an ego and was jealous of Warwick.

Gotta remember, every one was jealous of Capper! According to Warrick;)

The blokes the most lovable, harmless, insane, hilarious lunatic all merged into one.

People who hate on the wiz need to lighten up - he's not hurting anybody, doesn't put anyone down, just talks himself up.

Would be terrific value on a night out as well, at least for a few hours before you'd be driven into insanity

true enough, but he kicked most his goals from 35 metres out or less due to the game plan with brownlow medalists feeding him on the smaller than today SCG,
I was looking at a bit of the video of Carlton v Swans 1986 Qualifying Final. The level of midfield quality he was getting around that time was amazing. Players like Greg Williams, Gerard Healy, Barry Mitchell, Merv Neagle, Bayes, Bolton and Browning as some of the kicks going towards you from up the field. That is a dream as a full forward in a time teams did not play zone defence. I had forgotten they had Merv Neagle then. Cannot remember what year it was they kicked over 30 goals in 3 matches in a row but was either 1986 or 87. Imagine being someone that went to those 3 games in a row. You would almost have to pinch yourself it was happening by the third week.

I think ol Gazza Lyon was fearful of that when finding out the Wizzer was spending a few hours in Big Bill's house a couple of years back. He looked like he would genuinely get driven to insanity if had to be forced to listen to the Wizz for more than 10 minutes. His only way of dealing with the prospect was if you cannot beat them, join them. He dressed as the Wizz and carried on like an idiot to try to keep himself sane.

Found it.

Yeah as for Warwick, the two things I remember is he took genuine hangers and wasn't the longest kick going around.

He comes across as being very well researched and very witty, his entire personality schtick seems like a bit of a clever act as well, so you have a case of someone who played football very well and also really worked on marketing a character or image that makes him really stand out.

He would have fitted in with the Get This crew, they even used a monologue of him for a classic comedy sketch and a few other sketches .

Someone mentioned the Open Mike from a few years ago, that's one of my favourites, he certainly has a strong personality.

Comes across as not the sharpest tool in the shed, but still in a kind of loveable way. We remember the fun and look back fondly, unlike a couple of other big name players from the 80/90s....

I think people think this because he has a bit of a stutter, but I've never seen many other footballer's talk as well as he did on Open Mike.

He is a character but he is definitely very self aware and in on the joke himself. Id probably neck myself if i had to spend all day everyday with him but he seems like a good guy and is great for a laugh and bit of entertainment

Spent his whole career pushing players in the back that they had to introduce a new rule to stop him doing it.

I don't think he's a bad bloke, it's all a show and I think he is more self aware then people realise.
He has made a very good living for 25 years since his career ended - the 'show' has been a very wise career move. I had a few drinks with him at a NYE function a couple of years ago (he was the paid entertainment) and he never switches off from his persona - very engaging company and worked the room beautifully. Much smarter than is given credit for.

He was a super player for his era - moving to Brisbane was a terrible career move that has sullied what was up to that point a fantastic playing career. Also the white noise around his glamorous lifestyle detracted from his actual football ability. He could seriously play.

Yes you can - Look at Cyril's Marks or attempts just last week. The interpretation is that you can use your hands as perceived balance as long as you complete the mark and that using your hands does not impede the defender (as in push him from the contest)

They brought a rule in, in the 90's where you couldn't use your knees into somebody's back or it was an instant free unless you completed the mark. As the risk was great players stopped going for the high mark and the AFL changed it the next year and brought in realistic attempt seeing as they were killing one of the biggest spectacles of the game.
